Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How many filters can the circular filter holder hold at a time?

A: The Tilta Mirage Matte Box may only hold one Tilta Circular 95mm Filter at a time but it does have an optional 4 x 5.65" stackable filter tray that would allow you to add another filter to the matte box. See: https://bhpho.to/3LCDlWg

Q: 2. Can the we remove the polarizer and get a filter on this trey?

A: No, The filter is not designed to be removed from it's tray.

Q: 3. Does the VND filter have IR cut built in?

A: No, but the Vaxis IRNDs do. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/products/Neutral-Density/ci/114/N/4026728350?filters=fct_brand_name%3Avaxis

Q: 4. Do the vents on the sides of the matte box that help airflow at high speeds allow light to hit the lens at the wrong angles defeating the purpose of having a matte box?

A: The Vents should not allow a significant amount of light to enter the Tilta Mirage mattebox. If it does become an issue covering the vents with a small piece of gaffer tape would solve this issue.

Q: 5. How much light is lost using this filter? Is there a color frequency chart to show color cast?

A: The Vaxis 95mm Polarizing Filter will cut two stops of light. According to Vaxis there is no color cast.

Q: 6. will this fit with a meike FF 50mm lens with a circular filter?

A: If the circular filter has a threaded adapter, then yes, the Tilta Mirage Matte Box can attach to this setup because there is an 82mm adapter ring included.

Q: 7. Can I pair this ND filter with the DZO Arles prime lenses?

A: We do not see any issues using the Tilta 95mm Circular Polarizer for Mirage Matte Box with the a DZOFilm Arles Cine Lens.

Q: 8. Will this fit the SmallRig Mini Matte Box?

A: The Tilta Adapter Ring for Tilta Mirage Matte Box (58mm) is designed for the use with only Tilta products, as Smallrig molds their products differently and with no relevance to the Mirage. It will not provide compatibility.

Q: 9. At what focal length will the Mirage matte box start to appear in the frame (vignette) with a full frame sensor? I have seen videos demonstrating this issue with the stackable filter tray option and lenses wider than 20mm on full frame.

A: The recommended minimal wide-angle focal length that could be used on the Mirage VND without any vignette will be 35mm on a full-frame sensor.

Q: 10. Works with Freewell 82mm Magnetic Variable ND Filter System?

A: Unfortunately no.

[Glass] I use this filter with Tilta Mirage Matte Box. 4 stops is perfect for my needs when I shoot outdoors and helps me keep my lens wide open. I highly recommend this Vaxis filter.

[Solid ND] I use this filter on every exterior night shot, most interior night shots, and most close-ups. My lenses already have a nice soft focus to them, so combined with this, it really gives that nice cinematic touch. I typically just bounce between three filters for everything I do; a VND, a circular polarizer, or this 1/8 Black Mist (All are Vaxis via a Tilta Matte Box). If I had lenses with a sharper focus, I might have jumped to the 1/2, but for my setup, the 1/8 hits to spot without overdoing it.

[0.76 lb] I'm very happy with the Tilta Mirage matte box, largely due to the affordable filter options from Vaxis. The IRND filters are more neutral than the variable ND option, and also reduce IR pollution (red tone in shadows). At the affordable prices they are, there is little reason not to own a few IRND filters.

[Solid ND] Love that there is no color shift. Best bang for buck option imho.

[Solid ND] Not a fan of the pure mist look, but these black mist give the perfect balance of diffusion and clarity. 1/4 looks nice too, but can be a bit heavy handed for backlit scenarios. 1/8 is a great all-rounder.

[0.76 lb] So far both my Vaxis IRND filters have been flawless, love the leather sleeve they come with. Just wish the darn thing things came with a tray as you need those trays. These filters are way to delicate to be swapping them during a shoot day

[0.76 lb] You can't go wrong with Vaxis.

[Glass] This filter does a nice job softening the digital edges in a very subtle way (might be too subtle for some, but great for news/doc to not overdramatize the look.) Fits great with Tilta Mirage, eager to compare to Tilta's new Illusion line.

[0.76 lb] I really like the pure mist. I have the 1/8 and it's probably the one that just lives on the mattebox. Just enough to soften the contrast and smooth the image but not enough to make a statement. When you want more of that effect step up to the 1/4. I think the 1/2 is just to strong for most use cases.

[0.76 lb] Great set of filters, 1/8 Mist just takes the edge off the images and the ND's have no color cast to them that I can see. Great deal for the quality. Only negative is bring a lens cleaning cloth as they are a bit difficult to get in and out without leaving some fingerprints on them. Still, for the weight savings and results that is a minor issue.
