Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is there a usbc to dc solution for this? Komodo x's antenna blocks most dtap ports

A: No, USB-C to DC will not work to power the SmallHD Indie 7 RED RCP2 Monitor Kit for KOMODO/DSMC3. If your battery's d-tap port is blocked by the Komodo X's antenna, you could either get a different battery that has d-taps in a different location, or you could use a power plate to reposition the battery, such as the Core SWX GPTS V-Mount Hot Swap Adapter (BH #COGPTS). See: https://bhpho.to/46R5OTl

Q: 2. Can I power this monitor from barrel connector to another barrel connector on my v mount battery? Looking at this cable #CAC2724

A: Yes, the CAMVATE Power Cable with Locking Right-Angle Connector for Atomos/SmallHD 702 (2.5 to 2.5mm) is capable of powering in this way.

Q: 3. Good morning, does the SmallHD Indie 7 monitor use the DSM3 control specifically for the Komodo X camera?

A: The SmallHD Indie 7 RED RCP2 Monitor Kit for KOMODO/DSMC3 will also support the RED Komodo-X camera as well. The Komodo-X is a DSMC3 camera body.

Q: 4. Does this monitor have cross-conversion between HDMI & SDI?

A: Yes, The SmallHD INDIE 5 Touchscreen On-Camera monitor supports Cross conversion: HDMI to SDI, SDI to HDMI.

Q: 5. Does this monitor have signal cross conversion? And can it output HDMI and SDI at the same time?

A: The SmallHD CINE 5 Touchscreen On-Camera Monitor does support cross conversion from HDMI to SDI and from SDI to HDMI. The monitor does not output simultaneously.

Q: 6. How do I get this to control my red dsmc2 gemini?

A: The monitor can be used with optional paid software upgrades that enable camera control access to RED DSMC2 and KOMODO cameras. These software licenses allow users to control camera functions and project settings such as Start/Stop Record, FPS, Shutter Speed, ISO, Color Temperature/White Balance, and Clip Playback. But you need to have the DSMC2 control license firmware.

Q: 7. Dose this unit utilize the EL Zone system in false color?

A: The SmallHD INDIE 5 Touchscreen On-Camera Monitor does implement the EL Zone false color system.

Q: 8. The SmallHD Website says it covers 100% of Rec 709, but 75% of DCI-P3, is there a typo in your specs?

A: 100% rec709 is similar to around 75% of DCI-P3. SmallHD also only states that the Indie 7 covers 100% rec709. It doesn’t cover 100% DCI-P3 like the Cine 7 or 702 Touch.

Q: 9. Ehat size is the barrel input? Looking to get a dtap connection

A: Unfortunately, the manufacturer has not publicly published this specification and because we have yet to receive the monitor into stock, we are unable to verify at this time.

Q: 10. Will there be other camera control additions, like for the Canon C70?

A: There is camera control for RED DMSC2, RED Komodo, Sony Venice, and ARRI cameras. They may announce for Canon. Please watch the B&H webpage for updates.

[Yes] The monitor is very bright, it can be used outdoors. Its construction is solid. It has many configuration options, it is versatile. Maybe it has the power tab too close to the grip thread. same goes for the sdi connector. Very good image quality, the definition is really amazing. You can see the 10 bits.

[Yes] I've tried a number of different monitors and this is the first that fully meets all of my goals!
The vmount plate and metal build. Function buttons built in. Best menu system I've used. The best on-camera monitor you can buy right now. Obviously quite expensive but do you really want to skip on what acts as your eyes for the camera image? I don't. Get this monitor!

[Yes] This design is more slick than the 702 Bright and the image quality is slightly improved.

[443 ppi] Bought this during a B&H flash sale. It has all the good features and high NITS that you'd expect from a monitor at this price point. I like having the inputs/outputs on the bottom rather than the side. The battery plate integrates nicely on the back. If you use it with a Canon R5C as I do on occasion, you can power the monitor off a small gold mount or v-mount battery and use the power tap to power camera with a dummy battery. Will also convert HDMI in to SDI out which is useful for multi-camera setups going into the same monitor.

Niggling complaints: If light weight is important to you, this is kind of heavy compared to some other models. Also, I wish SmallHD would put their recessed anti-twist holes at the same distance as ARRI does.

[100% DCI-P3] When you choose SmallHD, you probably want the functionality more than the low price. So I'm not going to complain about the price.

I have both Indie 5 and Ultra 5. Unlike Indie's 1000 nits, Ultra's 3000 nits is perfect for any scenario I need. The aluminum body also helps with cooling. (The Indie has a plastic back.) If you're as curious as I was about the location of its fan, it's tucked away in that concave and convex structure on the back. You can't see it in the pictures on the site, but it's there. Indie is 1.6A, and Ultra is 2.1A. I plan to test how much more power the Ultra consumes than the Indie.

In addition, the physical buttons give it a huge improvement in operation. Physical buttons can jump to the different windows faster on set. Both monitors have a slight lag in switching windows side by side, but the Ultra's physical buttons made the lag perfectly acceptable. The other three custom buttons also work well in the new system.

The most distinctive feature of Ultra, and the biggest difference between it and Cine and Indie, is the power supply plan. Ultra is designed entirely for cinema cameras. It can only be powered by a 2-pin Lemo cable. I see a lot of complaints about the thickness of Cine and Indie. The thickness of Ultra is reduced due to being batteries-free. You also get this by around 100 grams more weight. But 100g on a cinema camera never being a problem. You know what I mean.

I hope this review helped you to make your decision.

[443 ppi] I upgraded from my Action 5 to this monitor and holy smokes what a difference. This thing makes it so easy to see what you are filming and the monitor outputs what the camera is capturing.

[443 ppi] I purchased the Shinobi 7 to put on my Komodo originally as it was half the price of the Indie 7, but after deciding to exchange it, I was so glad I did. This monitor is bright, quick, intuitive, and just works. It's been put through multiple 10 hour days and it adds so much easy functionality that you need out of a professional monitor. If you're in the market for a monitor ; just buy this one, you won't regret it.

[LCD] I have avoided Small HD because of their steep price point for quite a while. But with the recent sale I found it within reach.

This is the best monitor at this size period!

The build is solid - hard metal body with great feeling buttons and responsive controls. The image is flawless. So true to to the picture profile that I had no surprises grading at all. My AC found a ton of features that made his job easier and he ended up buying one for himself after the shoot.

SmallHD is the standard for a reason. I don't think I can go back to cheaper models with all their comprimises.

[Yes] This is currently the best on-camera monitor that money can buy. Camera control works very smoothly and the monitor’s user interface is very responsive and well thought out. Touch screen is also a great feature when using the camera control functions. I was surprised to learn that a screen protector comes in the kit!
