This 10-stop, 77mm Hoya HD MKII IRND Filter 77mm 10-Stopfrom Hoya HD MKII IRND Filter 77mm 10-Stopfeatures HOYA's exclusive ACCU-ND technology, which achieves equal reduction of the light in visible and IR spectrums. This added IR filtration eliminates issues with color shift in any shooting conditions, when compared to conventional ND filters.

Neutral density filters are important for filmmakers and photographers because they allow precise control over the amount of light passing through the lens. For filmmakers, this means shutter speeds that match camera frame-rate while maintaining creative depth-of-field control. Using a longer shutter speed makes it possible to increase motion blur to convey a sense of movement, or to dial in a video camera framerate. Increased density also makes it possible to shoot using wider lens apertures, helping to isolate a subject from the background.

The HD MK II IRND Series neutral density filters feature an anti-reflection multi-coating that reduces reflections caused by scattered light rays, which is an important concern during long exposures. In addition, a waterproof and oil repellent top-coat is applied for easy cleaning and maintenance.

The filter is mounted into a low-profile, lightweight, precision-milled aluminum frame. This frame design takes extra care to prevent light leaks and bleeding around the filter that may occur during long exposures. The slim filter frame can be used on most wide-angle lenses without vignetting. It features front filter threads for attaching additional filters or a protective lens cap.

If a single ND filter does not satisfy the requirement of the situation, or the photographer's vision, a combination of filters can be useful. For example: the combination of the HD MKII IRND 64 plus the HD MKII IRND 1000 will provide 16 stops of light reduction, enough to allow a camera to capture an image of the surface of the sun without overexposure.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this a weather resistant lens?

A: No, it is not weather sealed.

Q: 2. Why won’t this filter tighten on my lens? It’s a 62mm and that what my lens takes.

A: The loose portion is the adjustment ring for polarization. Otherwise the filter will fit tight to your filter thread on the lens.

Q: 3. Does Hoya manufacture this Circular Polarizer in a 95mm filter size?

A: Not currently, but they do have a 95mm Circular Polarizer Filter. Hoya 95mm Circular Polarizer Filter (BH #HOCP95 • MFR #B-95CRPL-GB)

Q: 4. Is this compatible with the C500?

A: Not that we are aware of. Tilta only lists this as compatible with the C200 and C300 MkII.

Q: 5. What is the proper technique for attaching the filter to the filter threads on the front of the lens? The filter is very thin, with very little to grip, but is further rendered difficult to screw on by the presence of the rotating section of the filter. Basically you can only hold the rotating part so it is tough to get the threaded portion to turn and screw into the threads on the lens. The rotating part just rotates so you can barely get any torque on the threaded portion. I finally got mine to screw in by pushing firmly toward the lens as I turned the filter. I don't want to damage anything. When using this technique the threaded portion turns slowly because it drags more on the lens threads.

A: Since submitting this question, I had a chance to look closely at the filter with my OptiVisor. It seems there is a very thin knurled ring on the threaded part of the filter just below the rotating part. I will have to practice and see if I can master threading it to the lens without cross threading or otherwise damaging anything. I do have a filter wrench, but the threads are so fine and delicate that it is even more difficult to tell if you are crossthreading. That will take some practice, too. The lens filter threads are inside a metal ring of sorts that prevents full sized fingers from being able to grip that knurled surface enough to be able to turn the ring to thread it in.

Q: 6. Does this filter rotate?

A: Yes, the circular polarizer rotates. it enable you to add contrast to colors outdoors, and remove the majority of unwanted reflections form non-metallic surfaces such as water or windows. Keep in mind that if you have a powerful light source 9such as the sun) in the frame, it will eliminate any polarization effects.

Q: 7. Apparently, the Pentax smcp-FA77mm f/1.8 Limited does not have quick shift. Is it possible to manually focus this lens when desired?

A: Yes, it is possible to manually focus this lens when desired. Simply switch your camera's focusing mode to manual.

Q: 8. Is this the same filter as the Hoya NXT Circular Polarizer filter, just updated?

A: According to Hoya, the NXTPlus filters are improved over the NXT-series because they "use better glass, an improved multi-coating process, more multi-coated layers for better light transmission, AND add a new 'Waterproof' Top-coat to repel water quickly away from the surface which makes it easier to clean and more fun to use." Q: 9. Will this lens work with A7R with K-mount to E-mount adapter ?will it give full-frame coverage ?thanks

A: Yes, the Pentax SMCP-FA 77mm f/1.8 will be compatible with the Sony A7R with the use of a Pentax K mount to Sony E mount adapter, such as the Voigtlander Adapter for Pentax K Lens to Sony E Mount Camera, however, it will not retain any electronic lens functions: http://bhpho.to/1joV3O0

Q: 10. Is it normal for a circular polarizer to have movement once attached to the lens?

A: Define movement. It screws on and that should be tight (no movement). The filter itself turns to orient the angle of the polarization (as opposed to a non circular polarizing filter which only really works when shooting in landscape mode)

[Aluminum] I use this typically outdoors in high contrast situations on a Nikon lens.

[77 mm] How much can you say about a neutral density filter. Quality seems good, and it does what I need. I bought 72 mm, but should have gone with 77 to use with my new lens. Oh well, hind sight. I bought a bunch of adapter rings to use the filter with all of my smaller lenses.

[Aluminum] This filter is perfect for taking long exposure time in daylight. I made some awesome pics of waterfalls with it. Image quality doesn't suffer any visible defects. A great value!

[0.205 lb] Use for waterfall photography where I need to use a long exposure in daylight. Works great, especially when you have an assortment of different ND filter strengths to work with. However, I have noticed on my 77mm Hoya NDs that the mounting clip inside the ring is beginning to separate and the glass is now loose. That might have happened during exposure to hot sunlight in the summer months. Also, be aware that you cannot use your normal lens cleaner to clean these filters (as stated on the filter case, but I inadvertently used the cleaner and it streaks the filters really badly!). Still, used properly, these are a must-have in your camera bag!

[Aluminum] I bought this lens for my Minolta XL-401 Super 8 mm camera. The lens mounts firmly, is affordable and has clear optics.

[0.205 lb] I normally get B+W filters, but went with Hoya this time and the filter works as advertised.

[Aluminum] this filter is great for shooting in bright light. I shoot a lot of waterfalls and it helps balance the light between the white water and the dark rocks in the creek.

[77 mm] This is a good filter for the money which is important as no landscape photographer should go outside without a neutral density filter or two. The .6 is a good choice if you want to carry just one. Great for general daylight use and perfect for waterfalls; allows you to use a slower shutter speed for that silky water look.
