Flexible zoom range, fast design, and compact profile, the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD Lens Sony E Kitis a unique take on the ubiquitous and popular telephoto zoom. Designed for full-frame Sony E-mount cameras, this lens spans a useful short-telephoto to mid-telephoto range and is characterized by its f/2.8 maximum aperture to suit working in available light conditions and for controlling depth of field. A sophisticated optical design includes a series of low dispersion and aspherical elements to correct a variety of aberrations and a BBAR-G2 coating helps to reduce flare and ghosting for high contrast and color accuracy. Additionally, a floating elements system is used to ensure consistent image quality throughout the focusing range, from 2.8' to infinity. Autofocus is handled by a pair of VXD linear motor units, which deliver notably fast, accurate, and quiet focusing performance, and full-time manual focus control is also available. Suiting this lens's use in inclement weather conditions, it also features a moisture-resistant construction along with a fluorine-coated front element to protect against fingerprints and smudging.

Versatile telephoto zoom is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 105-270mm equivalent focal length range.

Bright constant f/2.8 maximum aperture affords consistent brightness throughout the zoom range and offers improved control over depth of field.

Six low dispersion elements, including both XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) and LD (Low Dispersion) designs, greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to realize improved clarity and color accuracy.

Three aspherical elements, including both glass-molded and hybrid types, help to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion for high sharpness and accurate rendering throughout the zoom range.

BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) Coating has been applied to individual elements in order to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting to achieve greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.

Two VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motors deliver impressively quiet, quick, and precise focusing performance to suit both stills and video applications. This focusing system offers a minimum focusing distance of 2.8' at all focal lengths, and a 1:4.6 maximum magnification at the 180mm focal length for working with close-up subjects. Full-time manual focus override is also possible, and it is compatible with Sony's Direct Manual Focus function or fine-tuned manual control.

Two VXD units work in conjunction with a floating elements system to maintain consistent image quality throughout the focusing range.

When working with manual focus at the 70mm focal length position, it is possible to focus as closely as 10.6" with a 1:2 maximum magnification ratio, however peripheral image quality may be reduced.

A moisture-resistant construction benefits this lens' use in inclement conditions, and a fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to protect against dust, dirt, and smearing.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Zoom Lock switch prevents unwanted barrel extension during transportation.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. In which direction does the focus ring turn? Canon or Nikon direction? You know what I'm talking about.

A: In Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD Lens for Sony E, the zoom / focus ring turns in the same direction as Nikon's zoom lenses, increasing focal length while being rotated clockwise.

Q: 2. On the barrel, Tamron writes: "Designed in Japan". Where is it actually built?

A: The Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD Lens for Sony E country of origin is Vietnam.

Q: 3. Does the image stabilization work on a Sony camera?

A: The Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD Lens for Sony E does not have image stabilization in the lens. If you are using a Sony camera with image stabilization in the camera it will work with this lens.

Q: 4. Has anyone found a tripod collar to attach the lens to a tripod? Mine slips when the camera is vertical.

A: A stronger head would cure your problem--I haven't seen a tripod collar that would fit this lens.

Q: 5. Will it work with the new Sony a 7SC camera?

A: Yes, it'll work on any Sony E-Mount camera like the A7C or A7S series.

Q: 7. I just received my copy. Is it normal to hear a slight clunking sound when tipping the lens forward and backward? When I put it on the camera and turn it on, the sound goes away.

A: This is a normal function of the lens when it is off the camera.

Q: 8. Im using the Tamron in the 70 mm macro mode with the a9 set to MF and what I see in the viewfinder is the macro image plus a small red rectangle in a larger black rectangle and a 4.7x script. I assume what Im seeing is the "spotting scope" image and when I hit the shutter release, I get a wide angle shot, no macro. Can someone please expalin to me me how to get the macro image?

A: What you are seeing is the focus magnifier, which is just a tool allowing you to make critical focus adjustments on the subject. To get closer focusing similar to a macro lens, you would need to move the lens within the minimum focusing distance of 10.6" to the subject.

Q: 9. Work with A7SIII ?

A: Absolutely! The Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD works well with the Sony A7SIII!

[70 to 180mm] An excellent alternative to the Sony 70 - 200 zoom. This lens has great image quality and is much lighter, at less than half the cost

[Full-Frame] I've been waiting for Sigma to release a 70-200mm Sony E mount for years. But I finally got impatient enough to try the Tamron as an alternative. I'm glad I did. Really happy with this lens so far, despite it falling short of a 200mm max zoom. The autofocus is great for video. Also, the size and weight of this lens make it super portable and easy to shoot. Back in the day, I used to have the Tamron 70-200mm for Canon mount (paired with a Metabones adapter to fit my Sony a7sII. That thing was a beast! In comparison, this lens makes run-and-gun filming a breeze. I can even shoot video handheld! Highly recommend.

[67 mm (Front)] This lens has the sharpest IQ of all my lenses. I use this lens on the Sony a7iii body. This is a pro lens as it has a constant f2.8 aperature which makes it good for portraits to sporting events.

[Sony E] Using this for sports. It's larger than you'd think but still portable. Weighs little for the size. Would absolutely recommend for the sports videographer-the non-variable aperture makes it amazing.

[Autofocus] Yet to have a problem with this lens. Love the speed and quality relative to the g master 70-200. Going to hold onto it for a while.

[f/2.8] 5 stars b/c of value -- very good performance and a very good price, which is not to say that there are no advantages to the GM 70-200. I have shorter primes and longer zooms that fit most of my needs, but I found myself without the right lens for a special event -- just a family thing -- my daughter's graduation from film school, which was held in a large theater (once upon a time a movie theater). So I wouldn't have a choice photographer's position or any control at all over the lights. My shorter, faster primes would be too short. My 200-600 too slow. So I grabbed a used, very clean version of this lens from B&H, gave it a quick run through -- seemed fine -- and proceeded. I was shooting from a balcony with an A1 and the lens performed exactly as I'd hoped -- very quick focus and good clean results. It doesn't have the build of a GM, but it performs very well, it's MUCH less expensive, and it is smaller and lighter than some alternatives. Time and use will provide more information, but thus far I'm favorably impressed.

[0.5x] First time I bought a non Sony lens and I love everything about it. By no means I'm a professional photographer. I'm just an amateur who loves tech and photography. What more to say. I put this on my Sony A7 III. It takes super sharp pictures.

[Autofocus] First time buying a non Sony brand lens and I don't doubt my decision at all. By no means I'm a professional photographer. But I do like new tech and photography. The pictures I took with my Sony A7 III using this lens came quite good. Raw pictures processed with Luminar 4.
