To be perfectly clear, the filter screws onto the lens, the lens hood screws onto the filter thread, and when it is collapsed the lens cap goes onto the filter as if the hood were not there. I am sure it would be the same if you don't use a filter.The best thing is that even when collapsed it provides fantastic protections to the lens/filter surface, which is recessed about a centimeter, well away from sticky fingers and other hazards.
