  • This filter is not appropriate for direct solar observation with the naked eye, and should exclusively be used for photographic purposes.
  • Check the solar filter for damage before each use by holding it up to a bright light (not the sun). Secure the filter properly by screwing it fully onto the lens.
  • The NiSi Solar Filter is not suitable eye protection for extended view of sun or solar eclipses. Do not look directly or indirectly into the sun without appropriate eye protection. The Solar Filter should be installed in front of the camera lens or telescope before trying to align it with the sun. Point the camera away from the sun when attaching and removing the solar filter.
  • Do not use an optical viewfinder when aligning your camera or telescope with the sun. It is recommended to use the live view feature of the camera for aligning it with the sun and for viewing.
  • Do not leave a camera unattended where a child or inexperienced adult could point it at the sun without the filter adequately attached.
  • The filter may absorb solar energy and get hot during use. Use extra care when removing it.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. will this filter fit a sony 24-105 lens hood?

A: This filter will fit the Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens and you will be able to keep the hood on when it is being used.

Q: 2. Can I screw a polarizing filter on top of this one? Thanks!

A: As the B+W 62mm XS-Pro UV MRC-Nano 010M Filter has 62mm front filter threads (as listed under the Specifications tab), you may use a polarizer filter with 62mm filter threads on top of this filter.

Q: 3. According to the write up: Note: This filter ring's outside diameter is slightly larger than the actual thread size, and because of this you may be unable to attach the lens manufacturer's bayonet-mounted lens hood to the lens while using this filter. This is dependent on your specific lens and how thick the front rim of the lens is; with thinner, low-profile lenses usually being affected more.So if I apply this model B+W on a Nikon 50mm 1.8G lens, will the Nikon lens cap and the Nikon lens hood snap onto the threads? Thanks.Del

A: I am using the 58mm XS-Pro UV MRC-Nano 010M Filter on a Nikon 50mm 1.8G lens. I have had no problems at all with the lens cap or hood when this filter is on the lens.

Q: 4. Hi, does this filter take away from the IQ quality, or loss of light, degradation of image QDo I have take it off indoors, or when lighting is lowI need it just to protect the lensis there any downside using the lens filterscan you recommend me better lens filter doesn't loss of image Q Will this Filter work on canon17-55 f2.8mm lensthanks

A: B+W brand of filters happen to be of the highest quality filter manufacturers you could select to put on your lenses. This filter is a multi-coated filter which means the it has been treated with special optical coatings to improve light transmission, color accuracy and contrast. When using multi-coated filters like this there is not any loss/degradation of image quality. This filter will compliment the best lenses you could mount them on and will offer protection in any situation. There is no need to remove them when shooting indoors or in poor lighting as they do not decrease the light transmission (rather they help maintain the transmission as mentioned prior). This filter is the proper size for the Canon 17-55mm f2.8 lens and is one I commonly recommend for use with it.

Q: 5. When I use this filter on Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens can I install, remove and reverse Canon hood without removing the filter?I had Nano filter on 18-55 mm lens, and I had to remover the Nano filter each time I wanted to remove the hood or reverse the hood. Filter's edge was made thicker in order to compensate the thinness of the lens casing.

A: i used 3 nano filters of various dimensions. None of them interfered with the hood of the lens. i am using 67mm for my 35 F2 IS and for 100mm macro L. i am not having any issues with respect to hood installation.

Q: 6. Can I use this filter on the Nikkor 105 WITH the lens hood?

A: 105 can be only with 62 filter.

Q: 7. Does the new Canon E-82 II 82mm Lens Cap fit with this filter?

A: Yes it does. And it stays on. The outside threads on the filter grip the lens cap -- same as if you put the lens cap on the lens without the filter.

Q: 8. I apologize in advance for asking! Filters that you sell B+W 77mm XS-Pro UV MRC-Nano 010M and B+W 58mm XS-Pro UV MRC-Nano 010M are made in Germany or in China?

A: According to the information we have, our current inventory's Country of Origin is Germany. Please be aware this can change over the product's production life without notice.

Q: 9. Is this a good fit for Canon 70-200 mm f/2.8L IS III (version 3) lens?

A: Yes, the B+W 77mm XS-Pro UV Haze MRC-Nano 010M Filter, B&H # BWUVXSP77, would be compatible for use with the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM Lens.

Q: 10. How does this filter compare with the B+W 58mm UV Haze MRC 010M Filter? I can't tell the difference from the descriptions.

A: Their are two difference between the B+W 58mm UV Haze MRC 010M Filter, and the B+W 58mm XS-Pro UV Haze MRC-Nano 010M Filter. The XS Pro UV filter features a very thin brass rim to prevent vignetting when using the UV filter on a very wide angle lens. Both filters feature brass rims and the same glass with MRC Multi Coating. The second difference is the the Nano coating associated with XS-Pro filters that provides an additional eighth layer over the MRC, resulting in an improved beading effect when in contact with water, and scratch prevention.

[Aluminum] Well I bought this item for future use to photograph the upcoming total eclipse in April 2024. I did however use it to get (limited) shots of the annular eclipse this past October. It worked ! I was not in an area with totality and it was overcast, but i'm stoked for it's next adventure.

[Aluminum] Filter gives a white view of the sun, no color; beautifully sharp.

[Aluminum] Bought for the total eclipse but I’ve already used it for testing with the sun. My expectations were met. Very nice picture of the sun and the dark spots. (I used a 800mm lens).

[Aluminum] Bought for use during eclipse. Used on my Canon 100-400 lens. I am impressed with this filter as photos were really sharp yet this filter was reasonably priced. No complaints at all. Will do more solar photography as it plenty sharp enough to see sun spots and all the surface variations.

[72 mm] I bought this filter last year to photograph the partial solar eclipse (as seen from here in eastern Washington).  The weather didn't cooperate, so I got no shots.  However, in preparation for that eclipse I took a lot of practice shots of the sun, using the NiSi filter.  I use a Nikon D300 (although I have both a D800 and a D850, I don't want to risk possible sensor damage to the more expensive cameras by repeated shots of the sun), a Nikkor 80-400 mm lens, and a Nikon 1.4x teleconverter, with the NiSi solar filter on the lens, of course.  I found, like other reviewers, that the unedited images, shot with normal daylight white balance, look grayish-white.  Yes, that can be changed in post-exposure editing, but I found that if I set the camera's white balance to 10000K, the resulting images look pleasingly orange right out of the camera.  I do, however, usually increase color saturation in post--just for aesthetics.  The filter works great with my camera/lens setup, and provides plenty of darkening--so that I usually use 1/2500th, f8, ISO 100, when the sun is fully in the clear (no haze or clouds).  At those settings, sunspots are sharp and clear--as are other interlopers, such as I sometimes catch (on purpose) when shooting practice shots for the coming eclipse next month.  The attached images, shot through the NiSi solar filter, show sunspots by themselves, and a commercial airliner passing between me and the sun, with a couple sunspots on the sun's surface showing.  I shot the images handheld, in both cases. Images are cropped to better show subject detail.

I bought this filter because of its reviews, and because of the good price offered by B&H.  I've been totally satisfied with the filter's performance.

[72 mm] Bought this filter to use on a 400mm lens with a 95mm filter size. Bought it mainly for the eclipse but have found it useful for four minute exposures. There is no color cast.

[0.17 lb] Good white light solar filter with no artifacts that I can see . Slightly better image quality than my Baader ASTF. Paired it with magnetic adapters for a much quicker and trouble-free removal and replacement solution for full totality on 4/8/24.

Pricey, but I believe worth it. And will almost surely outlast a film filter, as it’s glass.
