Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Has anyone squeezed a mixpre-10 in this yet? It looks like it will fit if the XLR’s are low profile. I know the canned answer - but has anyone actually tried or have both so they could give it a shot? I’ll buy you a beer, I swear.

A: The MixPre-10 II is a bit larger than the MixPre 3 and 6 models that this bag is listed as supporting. We do not believe it will fit the MixPre-10 II and is not recommended.

Q: 2. If I got this for a MixPre 3 and a Hirose 4-pin to D-Tap/P-Tap cable, would I be able to power it off v-lock batteries with a D-Tap/P-Tap out? Also, If it was to be configured under a camera with v-lock power could it split and share power to both devices or is there load limits, etc?Trying to run it off a RED Raven, but also have the ability to power it separately off v-lock batteries.

A: Question #1) Yes, that should work fine. The MX-Powersled has a large input voltage range of 9 to 24 volts DC, and can accept power from any source that can be wired to the four pin Hirose DC standard, and supply the 7 to 9 watts the Mixpre 3/6 requires. I have used mine with an NP-1 cup to Hirose cable, AC adapter, as well as a car battery alligator clip cable with no problems. Question #2) There should be no issues with sharing a battery between both devices (with a commensurate decrease in overall run time). As indicated above, the Mixpre 3/6 needs about 7-9 watts to run with phantoms on all inputs, less without phantom. The Mixpre-3/6 is a fantastic piece of equipment that is extremely flexible and great sounding. Good Luck!

Q: 3. will this work with Mix Pre 3 II which is rated at 5V?

A: Yes the Cable Techniques MX-POWERSLED will work fine with the MixPre 3 or 6. The recorder regulates the voltage required not the battery sled.

Q: 4. If you use rechargeable batteries in this, can they be charged overnight by connecting the MixPre3 to a USB port?

A: No you can power the recorder via USB while recording or via the rechargeable AA batteries, however they need to be charged with their own charger outside the recorder.

Q: 5. does this work with the mixpre 6 ii? If so, is there a particular Sony L-style battery you would suggest to run the mixpre-6 ii?

A: Yes, the Sound Devices MX-LM1 L-Mount Battery Sled for MixPre, MixPre-M & MixPre-II Mixer/Recorders is compatible with the MixPre-6 II. Any Sony L-series battery will be compatible.

Q: 6. Can someone recommend a Hirose MALE 4 pin to D-Tap cable for this? I want to power my MixPre6 with a V-mount battery.

A: The Remote Audio Anton Bauer PowerTap to 4-Pin Male Hirose DC Power Cable (BH #RECAPTAPHIR) is a great cable option to connect a D-Tap power source to the Cable Techniques MX-POWERSLED for Sound Devices MixPre-3 And MixPre-6: https://bhpho.to/3b8c7JE

Q: 7. What is the difference between this one and the cheaper $65 option?

A: Hi Jared. The MX-LMOUNT holds 2 NPF batteries, and the MX-LM1 only holds 1 NPF. Battery orientation is parallel to the chassis for the MX-LM1, but perpendicular for the MX-LMOUNT.

Q: 8. is it compatible with mixpre 10t ?

A: Yes, it is. Mine arrives today, and I will verify, but the documentation explicitly states that is is compatible.

Q: 9. How long does it last?

A: Thank you for your question. It will depend on size of battery and the amount of channels you are using with phantom power.

Q: 10. Is this battery sled made of metal? From the reviews of the earlier, double L battery mount from Sound Devices, I’d be hesitant to shell out almost three times more money for this one if it is still made of plastic.

A: Thank you for asking. This device is made of plastic, but its form factor is considerably different than that of the MX-LMOUNT.

The Sound Devices MixPre-6 II is a great, compact recorder, but it eats AA batteries for lunch.

Some users power their MixPre-6 II (and MixPre-3 II) with USB power banks, but the USB connection is fragile and risks getting pulled out of place while in use. Enter the Hirose adapter.

If you’re using one of the smaller MixPre units, there’s nothing like an NP-1 or HiQ battery for getting through an entire production day, and the Hirose adapter allows for use with the proper battery cup.

The MX Powersled features solid, metal construction that snaps easily in place on the recorder. This is a great power solution for the MixPre-3/6 II recorders.

This is good if all you need is 2.5 maybe 3 hours of recording time (at one time), which fits what I do, plus it doesn't take up much room. You can always stop and replace the batteries, if you need more time, and i use the 3200 Energizer rechargeables. It snaps in the back of the mixPre 3, and has a very snug fit. It is hard plastic, but it does what it is designed to do, and so I'm pleased with it.

I was tired of carrying, swapping, and charging AAs for my MixPre-6 and forked out the money for this. As mentioned, it is a very secure connection that has me using the USB-C cable to get the files. I had been using it only when stationary, but recently bought a Sachtler small audio bag to carry my vmount battery, whose power will last longer than my shoulders.  As trustworthy as their cables.

I bought this instead of the Sony mount sled because I prefer the slim form factor of 8 AA Battery sled for the Mix Pre 6. I felt that the Sony mount takes away from that slim form factor and requires a bigger audio bag to house it. Let me start off by saying that when I got it, I had my doubts about it, especially when it comes to opening the top battery lid to add the 4 additional batteries. After some practice I found that the easiest way to open the battery sled is to pinch both side of the top lid (opposite of the top latch) and lifting up. The arrow icon near the corned of the latch is useless and is hard to operate since you need to apply pressure to the latch to open the top lid while lifting. That being said, my recorder lasts a LONG time and would recommend the Panasonic Eneloop Pro batteries. Add a USB-C power bus and your recorder can easily last an entire shoot day.

Because of negative comments about battery life on the MixPre 3 recorders, I bought the 8 Cell Battery Sled when I bought my recorder. With NiMH batteries, it looks like I can get over four hours recording time. That’s plenty for me.

There isn’t too much to say about the sled other than, it works. It has a surprisingly robust feel considering its plastic construction.

Like other reviewers, I was initially confused concerning how to open the sled. I finally realized that there is a small tab at the end to permit it to be opened. A short video or even a picture or diagram from B & H or “Sound Devices” could help alleviate the confusion.

This is a spare four AA cell battery sled for a Sound Devices MixPre-3. Like the MixPre-3 itself, this part is well made and of excellent quality. It is light weight and made of plastic, but was designed that way to keep the MixPre at about one pounds. Anything Sound Devices makes is first rate in design and build quality.

I use the USB C for power, but the 8AA batt sled is great backup and lasts longer than my current 4XX batt sled.

I updated my audio bag to include an SD MixPre-6 but wasn't thrilled with the powering options. But when I found this, I pressed order! And I'm glad I did. It works nicely withRemote AudioBDSv4U.
