A: You are using a d7000 which is a dx camera. Fortunately it does have an internal focusing motor which means you can use the Nikon af-d series. Using the 50mm lens with the crop sensor means you'll actually be shooting at 75mm in fx. That's a good focal length to put some distance between you and the subject for portrait. However I'm not completely sure what sort of landscape pictures you intend to take. 75mm on a fx gets pretty tight at times. I'd recommend the kit 18-55 if you got it with the body at least you'll be as wide as a 27mm at fx. That's an acceptable wide angle. The lack of vr is not a bad thing especially at f/1.8. I recommend a non vr in most situations to amtures so they can learn to have a steady hands.Build wise its brilliant! I love the feel and even the noise it makes!
