Responding to the demands of cinematographers, this 77mm Tiffen Black Glimmerglass Camera Filter 77mm Grade 1/2from Tiffen Black Glimmerglass Camera Filter 77mm Grade 1/2features a grade 1/2 density and is designed to take the crisp edges off the images that modern lenses and digital cameras produce. The filter subtly softens the image and lowers detail resolution for those who want to simulate the look of film footage while shooting on digital gear. This black Glimmerglass model reduces contrast and overall sharpness and can smooth out unwanted blemishes, wrinkles, or other fine details in a subject's face while keeping the general image in focus. Manufactured using ColorCore technology, the filter is designed to be accurate in its effect and to produce consistent results.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can you fit the filters into the pouch with their jewel cases?

A: You could possibly fit up to two filters cases inside the Sensei Three Pocket Filter Pouch (Up to 77mm) depending on their size, but you will have trouble closing the pouch securely. This filter pouch is best used without filter cases inside of it.

Q: 2. Does the handle and base come apart or is this one molded piece?

A: It's one molded piece. It's a little on the light side. Not heavy at all.

Q: 3. How many pages will this binder hold ?

A: The Archival Methods 17-5020 Collector Grade Ring Binder (2.5" O-Ring, Black) can hold approximately 100 pages.

Q: 4. Would this be big enough to hold 6 step up/down rings? No glass so It would be ok to squeeze a little.

A: The Sensei Three Pocket Filter Pouch (Up to 95mm) may be able to fit the 6 step up rings if you put 2 in each pocket. If the step up rings are different sizes and you can nestle one in the other it will wit. If you are stacking them it will be very tight but it may be possible.

Q: 5. Why did they replace the 090M filter with this? What changes in specs are there. Here's old one. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/7762-REG/B_W_66010378_77mm_090_Light_Red.html

A: The B+W #590/090 Red Light MRC Basic Filter (77mm) is the same filter as the B+W 77mm Light Red MRC 090M Filter. B+W did a name change on that line of filters.

Q: 6. I just wondered about using it with DSLR's, if it is compatible w/ a Canon7D or if this particular one may be better suited for camcorders?

A: I used it with my Canon 50D. It's a good fit just don't forget to factor in the weight of your DSLR lens or/and a mic. It can get heavy.

Q: 7. Is this big enough to put a Nikon D7100 in it?

A: Yes, it will because my Canon 70D fit perfectly in it. The Nikon D7100 and the Canon 70D have very similar dimensions. Now, once it is trapped in, that is pretty much all that you can have in it, hence, why there is another connector on top for lighting or a mic. It was a great buy for me and enabled me some good stabilization then I took my footage into After Effects for more stabilization and the result was great. Stabilization software work great if the camera was already strapped into a stabilizer and the camera holder knows how to properly move with the stabilizer. It was a great buy and definitely recommend it for anyone.

Q: 8. I have this 77mm filter - BH #GOVND77 - which is 77mm but the front piece of this variable ND filter is actually 82mm. Will this fit in this pouch at all?

A: Your filter will have a tight fit in this case.

Q: 9. I've got a 95mm and 2 smaller filters. Will it hold the smaller ones securely?

A: Yes.

Q: 10. Can I use this adapters with the Zip Box Pro?

A: They do not connect directly to the Zip Box Pro. If you have a smaller lens, you can use this; https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1449056-REG/wooden_camera_267500_wooden_camera_zip.html

[5 x 3.8 x 0.6"] Great filter to give some softness to the highlights without intense halation

[Glass] I was looking for a filter that would bloom the highlights and practical light sources without decreasing the overall contrast of the image, and I think this was just the filter I wanted. Compared to Black Pro Mist and especially Cinebloom, the shadow levels and sharpness are maintained with this filter. The diffusion is just enough for me. To me, it seems it blooms the highlights and light sources just enough to look like my image was shot on film, but without being too dramatic or noticeable. I think if I were going for a more dreamy look, I'd go with a higher Glimmerglass strength or use something like Cinebloom.

[Aluminum] Works well so far, and is less obscene than even 1/4 black pro mist can be. And price is fair. Now why do these filters cost 500% more in rectangular shape?

[5 x 3.8 x 0.6"] The Glimmerglass 1/2 is nice. The sharp edges are reduced but I still have detail. And being able to quickly pop off the filter for certain shots is awesome!

[0.18 lb] So I have used the GlimmerGlass series a lot as a large matte-box filter on the cinema cameras. But sometimes I go and shoot inserts on a lighter setup with my FX6 and a Zoom lens. For that purpose this filter is absolutely perfect. If the 1/2, 3/4 and 1/4 become available as 82mm filters I will purchase them.

[5 x 3.8 x 0.6"] Adds a subtle glow and sheen to the image, really helps breath some organic life into even the most sterile digital cameras.

[Aluminum] Tiffen Filters are always the best when it comes to build quality, reliability and options they provide. I am super happy with my 2 Set of Glimmerglass!!:) They make the image naturally gloomy without washing out the entire scene.

Also B&H did a perfect job on shipping and customer contact! I live in Germany and my package arrived only 4 days after my order was placed. Thanks, you guts are the best!

[Glass] Great diffusion filter that adds soft contrast to take off the digital edge while retaining sharpness. Would highly recommend over other diffusion filters.

[5 x 3.8 x 0.6"] Any time I decide on diffusion filters, the biggest considerations for me are the strength of halation and the amount of contrast I'm looking for. I usually default to Hollywood Black Magic as my standard diffusion filter. When I want something stronger and a big more vintage feeling I'll reach for Black Pro Mist. When I want something much more subtle, I'll go for Glimmerglass because the halation is under much better control than the other two. I usually aim for a 1 strength when I want to see the effect. Even then, it doesn't feel too strong.
