Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What bitdepth/sample rate can it record to SD if it's being used as an audio interface, say for livestreaming?

A: The MixPre-10 II can record at 32-bit float when connected to the computer as an interface. However, the sample rate depends on the capability of the computer and/or the software hosting the interface.

Q: 2. does the Mix Pre ii it's possible record to a USB C flash drive?

A: According to Sound Devices approved media list; it is compatible with USB-C flash drives. https://www.sounddevices.com/mixpre-series-approved-media-list/

Q: 3. Is a V30 SD card good enough for this when recording multiple ISO tracks?

A: The V30 rating on an SD card refers to the video speed class, so it is not a relevant rating for use in an audio device. As long as the memory card is rated for class 10 speed or higher, or U1 speed, it is going to be compatible for use with the Sound Devices MixPre-10 II 10-Channel / 12-Track Multitrack 32-Bit Field Recorder.

Q: 4. Can I use the TA3 outputs for IFB?

A: Yes, the Sound Devices MixPre-10 II's TA3 outputs could be used with an IFB system.

Q: 5. Does this only mix to stereo or can it upmix to 5.1?

A: The Sound Devices MixPre-10 II Field Recorder will only mix to stereo. For a 5.1 mix, you can upload the tracks to your computer's DAW.

Q: 6. will this battery kit work on the mix pre 6?

A: Yes, the same battery kit does work with the MixPre-6 II. We do offer the same batteries and accessories packaged together with the MixPre-6 II recorder which is B&H # SOMIXPRE6IIK.

Q: 7. Trying to use MX-LMount L-Series Battery Sled with two L-Series batteries connected, but when I power it on, all tracks on the MixPre-10 II start blinking/flashing red (on the ring LED around each track fader). I've tried using the battery sled with a pair of genuine Sony NP-F970 batteries, and also with a pair of genuine Sony NP-F570 batteries, and all of them are having the same problem. I have already switched the battery type to L-Mount in the MixPre-10 II's power menu. Batteries are fully charged. No other batteries/power sources are connected. Any idea what could be causing this?

A: I would suggest calling Sound Devices technical support.

Q: 8. It is possible to power it with a dtap battery and a herose adapter?

A: Hi Dario. Sure, you can power the MixPre-10 II with a dtap battery w/hirose connector. Just make sure voltage from the battery is 10 - 18 volts.

Q: 9. Do both batteries need to be mounted at the same time? The mixpre does not offer an option for a 7.4 watt power source-only the 14. Can I power with one and select that output? Or is it recommended to utilize both? If I can power with one battery at a time, what power setting do you recommend selecting?

A: I am not seeing an option for both batteries to be used at the same time.

Q: 10. am I crazy or does this device shut off all mic inputs other than 1-4 in ambisonic mode? this would mean while using the ambeo i cannot plug in any other microphones?

A: That is correct, only channels 1-4 can be operated for ambisonic recording .

I have used this recorder for a week not and it is awesome. Packed with features and an incredible build quality. I wish that it came with the mini XLR cables for output, included in the package, as they are expensive and not easy to find. Really love this recorder.

Using this device is very satisfying. Although small, the touchscreen is surprisingly accurate. The feature set is quite useful and having so many channels makes it significantly easier to just record everything and give more options to post. The device is rather tall when in a bag so I needed to come up with alternative Hirose cables in order to power the MixPre from an external power distributor without putting too much strain on the connector in my OR-280 since the MixPre has the Hirose connector at a somewhat inconvenient angle for how tall most Hirose male connectors are. The many options for timecode syncing are really useful. The external keyboard support and the auto-backup onto a USB thumb drive are also really nice features that lend to a lot more peace of mind. The pre-amps are excellent and the limiters really sound great. Very happy with this device.

I'm a video productions sound mixer. I got this recorder to replace a SD 664 for bag work and a backup recorder to my SD 833. I recently used the MixPre 10 II in a bag with a boom mic and two lavs recording interviews on the streets of Miami.
The menu setup is basic and easy to understand. The touch screen works well. I thought the small size of the screen would be an problem for my big fingers but the menus were easy to get to and use.

The 2 TA3 output connectors are useful for feeding IFB comteks and camera hops. Something the MixPre 6 II doesn't have.
The short cut switch is helpful. I used it for slate mic and changing scene numbers.
I powered my bag setup with with a BDS and an NP1 battery all day. Power consumption is very good.
The best part of this setup for me is the weight of my bag. This is the lightest bag setup I've ever had by far. My back loves the light weight. I'll probably use this setup for most simple bag work.
Putting the memory card slot on the bottom of the recorder is not ideal and getting it in and out is tough. But that's not new with SD recorders.

On first use I like the MixPre 10 II. It's another Solid Sound Devices Recorder.

Love this thing. I am not a sound professional, but this is so much better than four other recorders I own in every way. I don't like them forcing us to get Battery Sled for NP batteries, but overall it's a great product at a fair price point.

I own both a MixPre 10T and 10ii. My chief issue was the fact that USB recording to a computer was post fader, whereas pre fader internally. This made it impossible to mix in real time for listening or feed to a camera or board without affecting the external recording. Firmware upgrade 5.01 changed that. Now there are 12 USB channels, which can be assigned to any input, and 1-10 can be either pre or post fader. This allows the both the 10T and 10ii to work like a split console.

The headroom and low noise afforded by 32 bit float recording in the 10ii is amazing, but only internally. The USB feed is only 24 bit, without any improvement in head room. I'm still hoping.

5.01 also fixed the automatic copy to a thumb drive. The red record light flashes during the transfer, and it doesn't crash if you look at it crooked as before.

Bluetooth remote operation is also improved, with line-of-sight control possible at 50' or more.

I highly recommend 10 MixPre 10ii for mobile recording.

Having used the first version of the Mixpre 10 (the 10T) I feel like they took an already amazing unit and made it even more amazing times 10! I like that I can adjust the limited settings, and whenever I need to I can take advantage of this CRAZY amount of dynamic range with 32 bit recording! One other feature that I noticed was when you stop recording, your red ring around the recording joystick now blinks to indicate that it’s backing up the recording to the USB thumb drive (if you have one installed). I used to wonder why my 10T wouldn’t shut off right away when hitting the power switch and it was because it was still backing up to the thumb drive...it’s nice to know that something is happening now on the 10ii...it’s the little things in life! Nice job Sound Devices!

Oh and btw, same great sound as the 10T provided me many times before! Super clean, super low noise, just an all around indispensable tool!

It has been a long time since I purchased a field mixer. I made the decision to purchase this one so I could finally record each channel individually and internally. I was also impressed with the 32-bit float recording. The hidden gem that I really didn't think about until I started using it is the Wingman app that allows me to easily input metadata AND start/stop the audio recording from my IPhone. That is a super cool feature that has proven to be very handy!! I'm really pleased with the features and quality of this mixer.

I have had numerous Sound Devices units over the years and they are simply the best for the money. The pre amps and limiters are game changing in capturing location audio. I originally got into Sound Devices with the MixPre D series because I needed the limiters for loud shooting environments where I was solo shooting without an audio operator. So good. The quality of sound is night and day from using the built in pre amps on cameras. Over the years I have upgraded a few times to the latest MixPre 10ii. The MixPre 10 ii has completely overhauled my workflow and opened up so many opportunities to record high quality multichannel applications.

I shoot mostly documentary style events and corporate videos. The value for the money that you get with the MixPre 10 ii is solid. From round-table discussions, interviews, live bands, weddings, and everything in between, I have not found anything this unit cannot do for my needs.

My only recommendation is to make sure you budget extra for a bag and all the connectors and batteries you are going to need. Probably $1,000 for all the extras that will come. I run mine with the Sony NP series batteries and it does great, as long as you don't go cheep on the batteries. Get good ones with high capacity from IDX or Anton Bauer.

The preamps are INSANE! So crisp clean! This is such a great device at such a reasonable price! My only little complaints on what I would improve on is instead of having to go into the modes to change the Gain Knobs to Basic Mode if you don't want the knobs to act like faders to L/R, but it's only one or the other....I would have include the option to operate the knob as a fader, but if you push down and turn then it adjusts the gain for the ISO channels. Instead of keeping the Knobs to act like faders, push down on knob, press the gain option, and then press the extremely small arrows or reach into side of bag (if not in bad then nevermind) for the HP/Menu knob to adjust the gain. It's such a hassle to adjust the gain! That's another thing....I know the recorder is small so limited on space...but having the HP/Menu knob on the top would have been SUPER convenient...instead of the right side inside my bag. The Sound Devices 688/664 and the news one have it on top!

A lot of people love the MixPre series and some don't. All the complaints I heard were about the form factor and the touch screen. I am one of the people that love the MixPre. Audio quality is incredible and I like the touch screen. The headphone knob is useful for setting gain and other settings but not as convenient when in a bag.

About bags. I tried a few and settled on a K-Tek Stingray Junior X. I liked that layout more than the Orca.

I usually use 24 bit mode with analog limiters but really like the 32 bit mode. For not much more file size you can have great dynamic range and not have any concern about clipping. One is the nice benefits is you set the playback volume when you set the gain so when you are working on audio it all comes in loud instead of needing to be boosted. Since you can't clip there is no concern.
