Upgrade your workflow with the performance, enterprise-class storage capacity, reliability, and affordability of OWC Jupiter Kore 64TB 16-Bay NAS Expansion Unitfrom OWC / Other World Computing. With two Mini-SAS HD (SFF-8644) ports, each with 48 Gb/s of bandwidth, you'll be able to push through some serious data. The ports may be used in tandem to drive speeds up to 96 Gb/s, or utilize the second port to add an additional Kore system to increase the system's overall storage capacity. You can also use the Kore to expand an existing RAID system, such as an OWC Jupiter Callisto.

OWC's Jupiter Kore features a 3 RU form factor and is equipped with sixteen drive bays that support 3.5 and 2.5" SATA or SAS drives, although this model has 64TB of storage that is configured as 16 x 4TB SATA III 2.5" SSDs. Internally, these drives can transfer data at speeds up to 3.4 GB/s. The Jupiter Kore operates using three redundant 650W power supplies and includes two power cables, two slide rails, two rail extensions, eight M5 pan head screws, twelve M5 cage nuts, and four M5 enclosure securing screws.

OWC Jupiter Kore provides a vast amount of direct-attached or expansion storage capacity with up to 320TB of storage in this 3 RU/16-drive rack system. As your storage needs increase, attach additional Kore systems via Mini-SAS for even greater capacity.

When high-performance RAID storage is a requirement for your computer or server, Kore is the perfect storage for connecting to Mini-SAS RAID controller cards and adapters. Since Kore provides high-speed JBOD storage, it can also extend the storage of networked storage servers such as OWC Jupiter Callisto.

At the core of Kore is the fast Mini-SAS HD interface architecture which provides single cable speeds up to 48 Gb/s, or run dual direct Mini-SAS HD cables to achieve up to 96 Gb/s. Use this performance to speed up practically any workflow, ingest more video, edit more simultaneous video streams, and move more data around, saving time and money by allowing creative professionals to actualize their artistic vision.

Whether building from the ground up, or integrating into an existing system, 16-drive/3 RU racks provide installation flexibility so you can add the OWC Jupiter Kore system that best provides the capacity you need in the space you have.

Downtime is unacceptable. When you need to update, upgrade, or replace a drive or fan, you can keep the rest of the system up and running.

Kore has robust power supplies that feature redundancy, the ability to hot swap, and load balancing to ensure that the system remains up and running 24/7.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What would be the read/write speed of the QNAP 1688 with a full set of 16 x 18TB HDDs?

A: It depends on the type of hard drive that is connected to the NAS, its speed and the the RAID configuration (RAID Modes supported on the QNAP TVS-h1688X 16-Bay NAS Enclosure with Dual-Port Thunderbolt 3 Expansion Card: RAID 0, 1, 10, 5, 50, 6, 60, JBOD)

Q: 2. Does this take only Synology branded HDD's if I'm looking at 16TB HDD's? Cuz my supplier insists that only Synology drives work and other drives like SD or Seagate don't show up properly.

A: The Synology RX1217RP is an expansion Unit. Drive compatibility for expansion units are dependent on the host Synology device. You should check what is the host device that you will be connecting this unit to.

Q: 3. What is the model # to the CPU this unit has, is it the i9-12900 or i9-12900H or i9-12900KS?

A: The QNAP TVS-h874X 8-Bay NAS Enclosure uses the i9-12900 CPU.

Q: 4. Do you have to add all the drives at once or can you add to bays as needed. (Do they have to be the same size hdds?)

A: All the drives do not need to be added at once for the NAS Enclosure, depending on how the RAID is configured. The enclosure has twelve 3.5" and four 2.5" sized bays for drives.

Q: 5. can this device support 4x 16tb hdds and 2x 2tb nvme ssds?

A: Yes, this nas is capable of that many drives. 16TB may be too big for the RAID functions.

Q: 6. Does this require those synology branded drives or can I still use exos drives?

A: Synology lists several third-party, non-Synology drives on their website that are compatible with the Synology RackStation RS4021xs+ 16-Bay NAS Enclosure. Drives that are not on the list will not work.

Q: 7. Can you add Thunderbolt 3/4 to this enclosure?

A: No, the TVS-h874-i9 does not support Thunderbolt expansion.

Q: 8. Will the thunderbolt 3 expansion card enable the QNAP TVS-H1688X to function as a DAS? Can I still daisy chain more storage?

A: The Thunderbolt ports on the The QNAP Dual-Port Thunderbolt 3 Expansion Card along with the QNAP TVS-H1688X can be connected to directly or used for expansion and daisy chaining.

Q: 9. Does the DS1821 support 16TB drives, specifically WD Red Pro 16Tb?

A: While the WD Red Pro is not listed as a drive that was tested with the Synology DiskStation DS1821+ 8-Bay NAS Enclosure, it will still work with the unit.

Q: 10. Does this use hardware or software RAID?

A: The Synology RackStation RS1221RP+ 8-Bay NAS Enclosure uses software RAID.

[64 TB] Only used this drive for one week having transferred all my files onto it. So far so good. Little noisy but is working fine
Customer service is excellent if you need to talk to someone even if it's a minor issue.

[64 TB] This is a great storage value! So far the Software based RAID setup has performed very well. For new Apple Silicon users, there are a few hoops to jump through that I was unaware of. The disk would not mount initially, but after I reached out to OWC tech support, they gave me detailed instructions on how to get everything sorted out. But, just be aware of that if you are a Mac M1Pro/Max chip user. The only other gripe I've had is that the provided thunderbolt cable is very short, too short. It's only about 18 long.

[64 TB] This is my third ThunderBay enclosure, and it's used as the fail-safe backup for all my files. With the Softraid software, it's the best solution I've found so far to store and maintain my many terabytes of photo & video data. The bonus is fairly quick phone and email support response from OWC. The TB8 units integrate particularly well with my Mac OS machines and operating system.

[64 TB] Utilizing with the RS815plus. Allowed me to expand my storage utilizing smaller hard drives that were previously removed from the '815. Synology recommends creating a new volume hosted on this unit only, due to the performance hit with having a single volume communicating over the eSata cable. With its own volume there's no performance difference from the primary volume on the '815. Highly recommend if you need more storage.

[64 TB] There's not a lot to say about the unit. Put disks in it, connect it to the NAS, power it on, and within a few minutes you've got lots more room for a new volume. It uses an InfiniBand link to the NAS, so performance is just as good as if the disks were directly connected. It also powers on and off in sync with the NAS. Good stuff!

[64 TB] I have been using Synology DS3617xs NAS Server for more than 3 years and wanted to expand the volume. Synology DX1215II is the most energy efficient and one of the most easiest expansion unit I have handled thus far. It's a simple plug and play; and you can manage the drives in any RAID configuration in the DSM.

Plus, I think it's the cheap 12 bay expansion unit i the market.

Also, works like a charm with any Seagate HDD - Exos, Ironwolf.

[64 TB] I got one of these to add to my DS2419+ and it has worked flawlessly. It's a good way to expand capacity at a much lower cost than an additional NAS. Plus I can manage it all from one spot rather than needing to log into two separate NAS units. The only downside is that if the main unit breaks, I have no choice but to fix it because I need it to operate this expansion unit. But I'm okay with that risk.
