For all its wonderous capabilities, the Mac Studio has a couple of shortcomings. The internal storage is limited to a max of 8TB as a factory option and isn't upgradeable. There aren't any PCIe expansion slots to add a storage card. Whatcha gonna do when your projects' capacity requirements come for you? You need the biggest, baddest capacity solution in the land to get the max usefulness from your Mac Studio.

OWC's team is filled with creatives highly experienced in all phases of the video production world. They get your need for more speed and capacity when it comes to everything from backup to editing. The Node Titan SE is a Simply Elegant portable problem-solver for pros like you that need more from their storage:

  • DITs and productions needing a shuttle drive that can be easily shipped while also offering performance and reliability.
  • Professional video editors wanting a seamless editing experience with a drive capable of storing up to 9TB of data to have all the files centralized and easily accessible while editing.
  • Creative professionals working with cutting edge workflows such as VFX, multicam 4-6K, 8-12K RAW video, 360° VR content looking for ultra high-capacity storage with the best possible performance when using an external storage solution.

SoftRAID provides a level of storage performance that you simply can't get with hardware RAID. SoftRAID gives you increased power and control over your RAID drives and disks that hardware RAID can't deliver and doesn't lock you into technology that you can't upgrade or expand.

Using RAID 5 in the past meant giving up precious capacity and taking a big hit on performance. The Node Titan SE solves that problem by offering up to 8TB of useable storage while nearly maxing out the Thunderbolt 40 Gb/s limits with speeds up to 2477 MB/s. Now you can streamline ingestion and backup times on set, edit ultra high-res multi-cam sequences, and adhere to mandatory requirements (the 3-2-1 Principle) when producing content for large studios such as Netflix.

You can work without limits when you add the Node Titan SE to your workflow. There's a built-in power supply to keep your workspace free from the bulk and clutter of a power brick. If you're using a notebook, you can charge its battery while pushing your creativity and machine to the limit. No more separate power adapter needed, just connect the Node Titan's 85W Thunderbolt upstream port to your notebook via the included Thunderbolt 3 cable and you're set.

Harness the full capability of your OWC drive array with the included SoftRAID XT, a powerful, intuitive RAID management software for macOS and Windows. SoftRAID's RAID creation and management technology has been finely tuned to perfection with over 20 years of development to provide rock solid protection of your data and optimize drive performance.

SoftRAID XT provides an unbeatable combination of speed, protection, and compatibility:

  • Advanced: Create RAID 0/1/4/5/1+0 (10) arrays
  • Protected: SoftRAID Monitor constantly watches your disks and alerts you if problems are detected
  • Validated: Volume validation ensures sectors can be read and parity is correct
  • Certified: Checks disks before use to ensure they are safe for data storage
  • Vigilant: Error prediction helps protect against unexpected failure
  • Universal: Move SoftRAID arrays seamlessly between Mac and PC2 with built-in OWC MacDrive technology

OWC Node Titan SE solutions come with a certified 29" OWC Thunderbolt (USB-C) Cable. But if your workflow demands a different length to make the connection, OWC Thunderbolt (USB-C) Cables are a great choice.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. will it work with Sapphire Radeon RX 6700 XT Nitro+?

A: Yes, the Sapphire Radeon RX 6700 XT Nitro+ is compatible with the OWC Akitio Node Titan Thunderbolt 3 External GPU Enclosure BH #OWAKTNPTNT3.

Q: 2. I’m looking to connect an Avid HDX PCIe card to a new M2 Pro Mac mini. Would this allow me to do that?

A: Yes, you can use the OWC Akitio Node Titan Thunderbolt 3 External GPU Enclosure to connect an Avid Pro Tools | HDX PCIe Core Card to the M2 Pro Mac Mini via Thunderbolt.

Q: 3. The product specifications say the speed is 2800MB/s, but I know that the individual speed of the SSD in NVME format is over 2800MB/s. Why is the speed of Thunder Blade using RAID method only 2800MB/s?

A: To accommodate the 4 blades a switch must be used, this is what limits the speed.

Q: 4. Does this device's power brick supply enough power to charge a MacBook Pro (or similar PC) over a Thunderbolt 3 cable?

A: No, there is very little residual power.

Q: 5. Can this be used as a 16TB time machine to backup my Mac? Or only in a RAID configuration?

A: The OWC 16TB ThunderBlade Thunderbolt 3 is compatible with Time Machine.

Q: 6. Can this be used on mid 2010 Mac Pro tower?

A: No, this device requires a thunderbolt connection.

Q: 7. Does it support Windows 10/11 via Bootcamp?

A: The OWC Akitio Node Titan Thunderbolt 3 External GPU Enclosure would work with Windows 10. However, OWC has not specified whether or not it would work via Boot Camp.

Q: 8. Is this compatible with the Legion Go and RTX 4070? Do I need to install any software to use this?

A: The OWC Akitio Node Titan Thunderbolt 3 External GPU Enclosure can be used with a Lenovo Legion Go and an RTX 4070. In order to use this setup, you'll need to download the NVIDIA GeForce drivers.

Q: 9. Windows RAID setup. Please enumerate the "multipe permission steps" in 2.2 of the Manual noted under troubleshooting. You make it sound as though failure to mount in PCs is a common issue- text instructions would be useful. The unit comes set up in RAID 0 for Mac. There is nothing in the manual about setting up the RAID in Windows. I presume once you have followed the steps in 2.2, then the newly formatted drive will show up as unallocated in Disk Management. From there, I presume you must use "Storage Spaces" in Windows, found by typing into Search [Since SoftRAID is for Mac only]. Please clarify. You should have specific instructions on this as well within your text. How many SSD drives are present in the unit? That directly impacts the speed of a RAID 0. I know you are a Mac company, so I have significant reservations on your technical support for Windows.

A: You have correctly summarized how the individual blades are to be formatted in Disk Management, and then yes, you must use Storage Spaces. There are 4 M.2 blades inside the unit. I will speak with the appropriate people about adding more specific language for Windows users.

Q: 10. Is it at all possible to use this with Linux?

A: There is no simple answer due to the various Linux builds out there. It will all depend on the availability of Thunderbolt drivers available. One thing that I do know, is that unless you have a PC available to reformat the drive within the PC version of SoftRAID, the volume likely will not mount.

[9 TB] I've been using two of these drives for the better part of a year. While I don't edit full time, I have used these on mission critical projects.

While these are RAID 0 and subject to the faults of that, OWC build these specifically for RAID 0. Thankfully, I have not had any issues to date. That being said, because this is RAID 0, I try to backup this stuff often.

[Intel JHL7440] There are cheaper enclosures out there, most notably USB based ones, but the Thunderbay units are well worth the extra cost. The drives show up as direct access storage devices, and are hot swappable. The performance is great, and there's enough power delivery to handle eight high density drives.

I use ZFS with these units, and have two daisy chained together. When hooked up to a NUC, a high performance NAS with good performance and expandability is achieved without headache.

[9 TB] Very fast 2000 megabyte per second read or write. Not using raid. Don't bother installing softraid unless you want to use it+

[Intel JHL7440] This OWC 16TB ThunderBlade RAID drive replaced a 24TB Promise Pegasus RAID and I'm never going back to HDD drives. The Promise could be heard from the other rooms in the house, while the ThunderBlade is completely silent, even when working right next to it on the desk. It's also a LOT smaller. I suggest removing the OWC soft raid software which has caused issues for us in the past. We have the drive formatted as RAID 0 directly in Sonoma 14.3 running on our Mac Studio M1 Ultra. SSDs are a lot more reliable than HDD so I'm more comfortable running these in RAID 0 vs another RAID. However, SSD is not a replacement for a backup, and I have this drive being backed up onto my old HDD once a month.

[9 TB] This is my first ever RAID setup and it's painful to think I waited so long to go this route (15+ years of using individual external HDDs and SSDs).

I loaded this thing with 8x 16TB IronWolf Pro drives and setup a RAID 5 (128TB = 112TB total storage with 1 drive for redundancy/recovery).

The speeds I am getting with this thing average 750-800MB/s write and 1,300-1,400MB/s read. Note that you MUST use 8 total drives to achieve higher speeds like this, I see a lot of people complaining they are getting slow speeds, but they are usually using only 4 or so drives, or 5,400RPM drives.

I can easily playback 6K R3D files from my Red Komodo as well as all filetypes, resolutions and frame rates from my Sony FX3.

Definitely happy with this purchase and would recommend to any video editors who need speed, but also care about protecting their data!

[1 x 650 W] It might be a bit pricey, but it's a lot of fast storage that you can easily carry around. It holds about 10TB of virtual instruments for me and I love its portability. Seems very rugged as well.

[Aluminum] This enclosure works very well with the Intel Arc A770 I installed in it. Installation was easy, the handle is great. No issues so far (besides the issues common to all eGPU enclosures). The fans stay off until the unit warms up, but even then they're quiet.

[macOS] Using mainly for active Final Cut projects ! Couldn't be happier. The speed of drive keeps up with ever increasing .mov file sizes from newest cameras. No more crashes in FCX ! Love the compact form factor.

[1 x 650 W] I was struggling to get any sort of multicam editing done on Final Cut Pro X using a 2017 MacBook Pro. Though this was an investment, I decided to upgrade to this instead of an entirely new computer for now, and I'm super glad I did. The build quality, the performance, and the ease-of-use is second to none. The pelican-style case is a nice addition as well for when editing on the go happens.

The most important question isn't whether or not to get this, but to decide what size best fits your workflow. For me the 2TB was sufficient as I only work on one project at a time. I could see upgrading to another larger one later if that changes.

[1x Fan] It works great. I am using the Apple Thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter. Will not work that way running El Capitan. It is working flawlessly for me running Mojave.
