For all its wonderous capabilities, the Mac Studio has a couple of shortcomings. The internal storage is limited to a max of 8TB as a factory option and isn't upgradeable. There aren't any PCIe expansion slots to add a storage card. Whatcha gonna do when your projects' capacity requirements come for you? You need the biggest, baddest capacity solution in the land to get the max usefulness from your Mac Studio.

OWC's team is filled with creatives highly experienced in all phases of the video production world. They get your need for more speed and capacity when it comes to everything from backup to editing. The Node Titan SE is a Simply Elegant portable problem-solver for pros like you that need more from their storage:

  • DITs and productions needing a shuttle drive that can be easily shipped while also offering performance and reliability.
  • Professional video editors wanting a seamless editing experience with a drive capable of storing up to 72TB of data to have all the files centralized and easily accessible while editing.
  • Creative professionals working with cutting edge workflows such as VFX, multicam 4-6K, 8-12K RAW video, 360° VR content looking for ultra high-capacity storage with the best possible performance when using an external storage solution.

SoftRAID provides a level of storage performance that you simply can't get with hardware RAID. SoftRAID gives you increased power and control over your RAID drives and disks that hardware RAID can't deliver and doesn't lock you into technology that you can't upgrade or expand.

Using RAID 5 in the past meant giving up precious capacity and taking a big hit on performance. The Node Titan SE solves that problem by offering up to 64TB of useable storage while nearly maxing out the Thunderbolt 40 Gb/s limits with speeds up to 2477 MB/s. Now you can streamline ingestion and backup times on set, edit ultra high-res multi-cam sequences, and adhere to mandatory requirements (the 3-2-1 Principle) when producing content for large studios such as Netflix.

You can work without limits when you add the Node Titan SE to your workflow. There's a built-in power supply to keep your workspace free from the bulk and clutter of a power brick. If you're using a notebook, you can charge its battery while pushing your creativity and machine to the limit. No more separate power adapter needed, just connect the Node Titan's 85W Thunderbolt upstream port to your notebook via the included Thunderbolt 3 cable and you're set.

Harness the full capability of your OWC drive array with the included SoftRAID XT, a powerful, intuitive RAID management software for macOS and Windows. SoftRAID's RAID creation and management technology has been finely tuned to perfection with over 20 years of development to provide rock solid protection of your data and optimize drive performance.

SoftRAID XT provides an unbeatable combination of speed, protection, and compatibility:

  • Advanced: Create RAID 0/1/4/5/1+0 (10) arrays
  • Protected: SoftRAID Monitor constantly watches your disks and alerts you if problems are detected
  • Validated: Volume validation ensures sectors can be read and parity is correct
  • Certified: Checks disks before use to ensure they are safe for data storage
  • Vigilant: Error prediction helps protect against unexpected failure
  • Universal: Move SoftRAID arrays seamlessly between Mac and PC2 with built-in OWC MacDrive technology

OWC Node Titan SE solutions come with a certified 29" OWC Thunderbolt (USB-C) Cable. But if your workflow demands a different length to make the connection, OWC Thunderbolt (USB-C) Cables are a great choice.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does it come with the USB-Connector?

A: Yes, a Thunderbolt 3 cable is included with the OWC Akitio Node Titan Thunderbolt 3 External GPU Enclosure.

Q: 2. Definitely a niche question, but does the unit power on and off depending if it's plugged in to a computer? I'm unsure if there's a power button somewhere on it that I'm missing. Would be really convenient if unplugging it from a laptop would have it power down.

A: The LED array indicator on the front of the device will glow blue when the device is receiving power and is connected to an active host. The LED will glow white when the device is connected to a host that is in Sleep or hibernation mode, or when it has power but is not connected to a host. When the LED glows white, the device is disconnected and in low power standby mode.

Q: 3. will it work with Sapphire Radeon RX 6700 XT Nitro+?

A: Yes, the Sapphire Radeon RX 6700 XT Nitro+ is compatible with the OWC Akitio Node Titan Thunderbolt 3 External GPU Enclosure BH #OWAKTNPTNT3.

Q: 4. Is this compatible with Mac book pro that have the M1 chip?

A: External graphics processors (eGPU) are only supported on Macs with an Intel Processor. One cannot currently use an eGPU with an Apple processor like the M1. The OWC Akitio Node Titan Thunderbolt 3 External GPU Enclosure can still be used with these newer Macs for other PCIe devices, but not with eGPUs

Q: 5. Can both Thunderbolt ports be used to access the drive from two computers simultaneously?

A: Sorry, you are only able to connect the hard drive to a single computer.

Q: 6. The product specifications say the speed is 2800MB/s, but I know that the individual speed of the SSD in NVME format is over 2800MB/s. Why is the speed of Thunder Blade using RAID method only 2800MB/s?

A: To accommodate the 4 blades a switch must be used, this is what limits the speed.

Q: 7. Hello, will it work with a Lenovo P73 Laptop?

A: As long as the ports on the computer are native Thunderbolt 3 there should be no problems.

Q: 8. will it work with the rtx 3080/3070/3060 ti? (size and power)?

A: Yes, it is compatible with all those graphics cards for size and wattage.

Q: 9. Can I use this drive on 2015 MacBook Pro, which predates Thunderbolt 3 ?

A: You can get a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter (https://bhpho.to/2VdXuZP), and plug THAT into the drive. Then use Thunderbolt 2 to connect to your computer.

Q: 10. Can this be used as a 16TB time machine to backup my Mac? Or only in a RAID configuration?

A: The OWC 16TB ThunderBlade Thunderbolt 3 is compatible with Time Machine.

[1x Fan] I have been using G-Technology drives for almost 10 years. They are tried and true. Now that WD owns them, I still LOVE the products. Super low failure rates on WD hard drives, great quality to the enclosure, and super quiet. The old G-Speed Shuttles have been amazing for me. When I switched to the M2 Macs, the G-speeds no longer worked (Which was a bummer). So I was forced into upgrading to this. But I love it, same quality as before but much better design. Love the hard drives are accessible through the front, and not the top like before. Love the handle, and the entire thing feels a lot beefier.

[72 TB] This enclosure works very well with the Intel Arc A770 I installed in it. Installation was easy, the handle is great. No issues so far (besides the issues common to all eGPU enclosures). The fans stay off until the unit warms up, but even then they're quiet.

[Aluminum] I hesitated before I bought this because of the price; after I was sure this was fair, I bought it from B&H so I could use my B&H PayBoo card and get reimbursed for the sales tax. I haven't looked back. It is an extremely fast 8 TB and I use it to edit large drone photos and movies as well as family movies. Final Cut Pro finally flies! The soft raid software that comes with this drive is excellent and gives me the full  2800 MB/s it promises. So much faster than my iMac memory/SSD and my external SSD cards. I highly recommend this drive for fast processing of very large files like photographs and movies. They recommend you keep backups and I do.

[Aluminum] This OWC 16TB ThunderBlade RAID drive replaced a 24TB Promise Pegasus RAID and I'm never going back to HDD drives. The Promise could be heard from the other rooms in the house, while the ThunderBlade is completely silent, even when working right next to it on the desk. It's also a LOT smaller. I suggest removing the OWC soft raid software which has caused issues for us in the past. We have the drive formatted as RAID 0 directly in Sonoma 14.3 running on our Mac Studio M1 Ultra. SSDs are a lot more reliable than HDD so I'm more comfortable running these in RAID 0 vs another RAID. However, SSD is not a replacement for a backup, and I have this drive being backed up onto my old HDD once a month.

[macOS] I've been using this drive for a few years now. I travel with it to shoots sometimes. Never had a single issue. Incredibly fast and very reliable. I edit 4K video all the time without any issues. I'm not sure what the person talking about the issues with the M1 is talking about, I did not have to do any of that on my Mac Studio M1 Ultra. It was plug and play without having to adjust any settings. I would highly recommend this drive.

[Intel JHL7440] There are cheaper enclosures out there, most notably USB based ones, but the Thunderbay units are well worth the extra cost. The drives show up as direct access storage devices, and are hot swappable. The performance is great, and there's enough power delivery to handle eight high density drives.

I use ZFS with these units, and have two daisy chained together. When hooked up to a NUC, a high performance NAS with good performance and expandability is achieved without headache.

[macOS] I was struggling to get any sort of multicam editing done on Final Cut Pro X using a 2017 MacBook Pro. Though this was an investment, I decided to upgrade to this instead of an entirely new computer for now, and I'm super glad I did. The build quality, the performance, and the ease-of-use is second to none. The pelican-style case is a nice addition as well for when editing on the go happens.

The most important question isn't whether or not to get this, but to decide what size best fits your workflow. For me the 2TB was sufficient as I only work on one project at a time. I could see upgrading to another larger one later if that changes.

[72 TB] Very fast 2000 megabyte per second read or write. Not using raid. Don't bother installing softraid unless you want to use it+

[1 x 650 W] Using mainly for active Final Cut projects ! Couldn't be happier. The speed of drive keeps up with ever increasing .mov file sizes from newest cameras. No more crashes in FCX ! Love the compact form factor.

[Aluminum] I have used smaller G-RAID Shuttles in the past. I've been pretty happy with all of them. This purchase has been great because 160TB at raid 5 still gives me 140TB of usable space. I feel safer with the parity disk and I can still transfer at speed over 1500MB/s or 12Gbps all day long.
