$297.00 $397.98

The Arturia Beatstep USB, MIDI, and CV Controller and Sequencer is a USB class-compliant driverless controller that enables control over DAWs, loop-triggering software, drum software, VST instruments, VST effects, DJ applications, MIDI instruments, and analog equipment that has control voltage (CV) connections. The unit features sixteen pressure and velocity sensitive pads, sixteen rotary encoders, transport and preset controls with sixteen presets, and a jogwheel for transpose, rate, and level.

When placed in controller mode, the pads illuminate red via backlit LEDs. In this mode, a performer can use the pads and rotary encoder knobs to control drum software on an iPad (with camera connector kit) or a computer such as BFD, Kontakt, Ableton Live's Drum Rack, EZ Drummer, Addictive Drums, Reason Kong, or Geist. The controller can also be used to trigger clips or tracks in production and DJ software such as Ableton Live, Traktor, and Serato. The rotary encoders can be MIDI mapped to control filters, EQs, delays, and other effects. The included MIDI Control Center software provides a user interface for MIDI mapping the functions of the controller with the option of archiving favorite presets. The pads can be set for note generation, MIDI CC buttons, and sending program change messages for a wide range of applications.

When placed in sequencer mode, the pads illuminate red via backlit LEDs. In this mode, the unit can be connected to MIDI modules, synthesizers that have CV connections, and software instrument plug-ins within a computer via USB. The pads and encoders enable programming steps in the sequence and changing the pitch of each step. The unit includes scale modes to quantize the pitch of the encoders to specific pitches within a given scale. Up to sixteen sequences can be stored in internal memory. The unit can be rapidly switched between controller and sequencer mode for flexible workflows using both hardware and software instruments.

For I/O, the unit includes: a class-compliant USB input for connection to a computer or iPad, a MIDI breakout cable for connection to traditional MIDI modules, a 1 volt-per-octave CV output, and a CV gate output for connection to hardware synthesizers and other equipment. The unit is powered by USB connection to a computer or USB power adapter.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can it control 2 midi synths at a time, each with distinct, but synced patterns? If so, what to know when setting this up? THanks!

A: Yes. You can control up to three devices with the Beatstep. Here is a forum post from Arturia on how to do it. https://forum.arturia.com/index.php?topic=89269.0

Q: 2. With the 49 key, I want to program the first 10 keys as shortcuts in Musescore, so I'm wondering if there is there a way to acces an octave below or up?

A: There are octave up and octave down buttons that will shift the keyboard one, two or three octaves lower and one, two, three or four octaves higher. Here is a link to the user manual - see page 5 for the information regarding octaves and transposing: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/617697.pdf

Q: 3. hi what are the dimensions of this key lab thanks?

A: The Arturia KeyLab MKII 49 measures 31.2 x 11.7 x 2.1" (793 x 297 x 53 mm).

Q: 4. Does it require external speakers?

A: Yes

Q: 5. Does it come in different colors? Or just black? Thanks!

A: The Vortex Wireless 2 is only available in black at this time.

Q: 6. Can this be used as an extension to another keyboard?

A: The Nectar SE49 is a MIDI controller, so it could be sent digital information from another MIDI-enabled keyboard and act as an extension of that keyboard.

Q: 7. CAN I USE HEADPHONES WITH IT?

A: No, this is a controller only and there are no sounds in it to hear. You will monitor audio via your device's headphone output (computer/iPad).

Q: 8. Is the shelf/extension for a laptop an included standard accessory? How large of a laptop can it accomodate?

A: The Arturia KeyLab 88 MkII Hammer-Action MIDI Controller and Software (White) does include a laptop plate, the dimensions of which are 16" x 10.3".

Q: 9. Can I use 2 different pairs of speakers, either interchangeably (A/B comparison) as well as all 4 speakers at the same time?

A: The Arturia MiniFuse 4 Portable 4x4 USB Type-C Audio/MIDI Interface does have four analog outputs, which could conceivably be routed to four different speakers, but it does not have any switching controls. For A/B comparison between multiple speakers, you would really want to use a monitor controller.

Q: 10. Does this have waterfall keys?

A: No, the keys on the Arturia KeyLab 88 MkII Hammer-Action MIDI Controller have a very small lip at the end. They are not waterfall style keys with a totally flat edge.

[2.515 lb] The sequencer and arp are a plus.

[16 Assignable] I was looking for something smaller than my full size Emu Xboard 61 but bigger than my Keith M illen K-Board and this is definitely it. The keys aren't mini-keys, they're slimkeys with velocity and channel aftertouch that feel more like the excellent feel of the Emu Xboard 61 instead of the rubber drumpad-like keys on the K-board. There's no pitchbend/mod wheel, instead there's two capactive touch strips that are very responsive. I'll use the KeyStep primarily with the USB connection, but it also has mod, gate, pitch and sync outputs (and sync in) if I want to connect to modular analog gear. In addition to the USB MIDI connection there are DIN MIDI in and out and a sustain pedal input that automatically senses the polarity of your sustain pedal. The majorly cool features though, are the polyphonic step sequencer and the arpeggiator. Pretty amazing that this stuff is included at all at this price, and they are by no means an after thought. It wasn't that long ago that just the step sequencer functionality would set you back hundreds of dollars if you bought a separate step sequencer. The KeyStep combines this and versatile I/O along with a great feeling keybed for less than $120.

[2.515 lb] Not much of.a learning curve, everything's pretty much obvious with a few oh, that's nice extra features layered on top. Good labelling and layout of all the features.

[2.515 lb] Don't have a lot to compare it to, but sequencer and key action seem about as good as I could ask for as a newb electronic music creator.

[16 Assignable] Great sequencer keyboard, I use it with Ableton and it works like a charm. The built in ARP is super fun and I look forward to exploring more features.

[2.515 lb] First of all: I ordered it on B&H and arrived the next day, free shipping!!! Wow! The Arturia Keystep is tremendously versatile and powerful controller. Everything is done right here! Plus, it's built very well!!! If you have hardware/software synths, a good computer (or two), a couple of iPads latest generations, buy it and you'll be more than satisfied! I use mine through Roland Juno-G, Roland GR-20, various laptops, iPads, iMac -- triggering lots of software, and I have to tell you that I can't stop using it! Don't forget one very important thing: it has a conventional MIDI IN/OUT, plus the USB, which also sends MIDI. Look around and try to find out how many controllers offer that sort of versatility?!? And for that price!!!???

Two things I have to figure out: how to save parameters from the Midi Control Center to the Keystep, and if I can plug it in into a battery (RAV) and only send the MIDI to an iPad, in order not to burn too fast through the iPad's battery. Other than that, look at the title of this post!!!

[2.515 lb] I use it as a MIDI keyboard, a sequencer, an arpeggiator, and then do all of that with the CV too. It's great.

[16 Assignable] I bought a Keystep to go with a Behringer Model D and Neutron I bought. When I was looking and listening to demos of the two synths above I noticed a lot of people using the Keystep. So I researched it and decided to give it a try. Glad I did. It's hard to beat for the price and features.

Keyboard feels pretty good for what it is. Very slightly spongy until you get used to it. It's not going to feel like a synth action keybed in larger keyboards or even an Alesis Micron but not far from the Micron's keyboard. Feels like my Yamaha CS01's keys. It's very playable.

The sequencer section and arpeggiator section are perfect for what they are meant for and do. Great for driving monophonic synth modules and it will do poly synths too. See specs for more info.

Build quality feels first rate. Metal bottom and plastic top. Knobs are silky smooth, selector knobs are smooth and quiet and illuminated rubber buttons feel good for what they are.

Bottom line is I would highly recommend the Keystep for what it's meant to do. Drive a synth and then some!

[16 Assignable] Arturia's BeatStep Pro is a very welcome addition to my hardware. I have been able to use it in place of keys in a lot more situations that I expected. With this in my collection, I was also able to grow the confidence to let go of a drum machine I had held onto for too long.

I had looked at a couple of sequencers because my main synthesizer did not have one built in. It is a nice piece, and I looked at a lot of nice sequencers. The BeatStep Pro kept getting good reviews, so I picked one up expecting to sell it when I purchased another. Well, I kept using it and ended up setting a couple of other pieces free. It is really nice to work with.

My biggest issue is one that runs across a lot of pieces. Arturia has created an extensive .pdf manual. At times the page count reminds me of Devarahi's textbook (length more than raw info). I think Arturia could distill this information into a 30 page manual included with the BSP. We could then have it for easy reference.
