The relentless growth of data means organizations must find ways to efficiently store more data. That's where higher areal density comes into play, with its ability to boost capacities while not increasing the storage footprint. The Ultrastar DC HC580 with OptiNAND technology is the next step in data density, allowing data centers to maximize their storage, especially in footprint- and power-constrained environments.

This 24TB drive combines several innovative technologies, including energy-assist magnetic recording (EAMR), HelioSeal, triple-stage actuator (TSA) that improves TPI capability with great control over the actuator arm, improved OptiNAND Technology and ArmorCache. This innovation is incorporated into a 10-disk CMR drive, delivering the performance, quality, and reliability that data center customers require.

Innovative technologies, such as OptiNAND and energy-assisted magnetic recording (EAMR), triple-stage actuator (TSA), and HelioSeal enable high capacity with low power.

The Ultrastar DC HC850 is a platform with OptiNAND technology, which integrates an iNAND Universal Flash Storage (UFS) Embedded Flash Drive (EFD), with traditional spinning disk media. Western Digital's 2.4TB/disk CMR areal density is used with its 10-disk platform, delivering a 24TB capacity with a CMR recording format. More disks and high areal density work together to maximize data storage efficiency.

OptiNAND improves drive resiliency in the even of an emergency power off (EPO) by increasing the amount of non-volatile (NVM) available to flush critical metadata to the iNAND.

ArmorCache enabled by OptiNAND technology ensures that all the data in the DRAM cache is safely written to the onboard NVM device, should a sudden power loss even occur. Power to a host system may be lost without warning; operating HDD's with write cache disable (WCD) reduced the risk of data loss. With ArmorCache technology, host flush cache commands are no longer necessary to protect data, allowing for maximum performance in either WCD or write cache enabled (WCE) mode. This feature provides enterprise power loss protection of data in WCE while increasing performance in WCD mode.

The Ultrastar DC HC580 meets modern data center reliability requirements with 2.5M MTBF (projected) and a limited 5-year warranty. It is performance-optimized for heavy application workloads and is designed to handle workloads up to 550TB per year.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. do both the 16tb and the 18tb use the same case? the photo for the 18tb shows center holes, but the 16 only shows top and bottom

A: While not specified, they look to share the same case.

Q: 2. the warranty isn't described here on the 18TB SAS, is this 5 years from WD as well?

A: The warranty on this WD 18TB UltraStar DC HC550 7200 rpm SAS-3 3.5" Internal HDD (OEM), would be a 5 year USA manufacturers warranty.

Q: 3. I’m a professional photographer and all of my images are stored via these large drives. My operating system is on a ssd, and when I first bring images in they are processed on my ssd drive. But one I store them, they are still accessed by my software (Lightroom and other Adobe products), and often I’m still retrieving, searching for and editing the images long after they were moved off my ssd drive. This drive will be wired directly into my mother board and PC that has 4 storage drives. What are the pros of the following two drives and cons for my situation. Which would you recommend? Thank you.

A: SSDs should be used for your applications and OS. The hard drives should be used for storing and retrieving your data files.

Q: 4. I'm thinking of getting this along with a hard drive enclosure so it can be used as an external drive. Are there any downsides to using the drive in this manner? Thanks.

A: No, this device would be fully compatible in this manner.

Q: 5. Is this drive compatible with Synology 418Play?

A: The WD 16TB UltraStar DC HC550 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal HDD BH #WE16TBSATHDD is compatible with a Synology 418Play.

Q: 6. Where are these WD HDDs made?

A: The WD 16TB UltraStar DC HC550 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal HDD (OEM), B&H # WE16TBSATHDD, is made in Thailand.

Q: 7. Is this hard drive sold in a retail box, with a full manufacturers warranty, or is it OEM?

A: The WD 18TB UltraStar DC HC550 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal HDD (OEM) is an OEM drive and comes with a USA Limited 5-Year Manufacturer Warranty.

[550 TB] It actually really hard to find WD UltraStar drives that are actually supported to the five year warranty If you read the BackBlaze Disk Report https://www.backblaze.com/cloud-storage/resources/hard-drive-test-data these are the go to reliable disks for NAS. But trying to find an actual new supported product is almost impossible. Thanks to B&H for sourcing this for us. I checked my disks on the WD site when they arrived and they did check out as fully support for the 5 year period. Thanks

[550 TB] My first experience with B&H was a good one. I am very happy with how quickly my Ultrastar drive arrived and I was very happy to see how well it was packed. I have no concerns about damage in transit. As for the drive itself, I am a longtime buyer of Ultrastar drives going back to when they were HGST. They are well made with great performance and a 5 year warranty which thankfully I have not needed to use over the years. I also find them to be much quieter than the WD Red Pro drive I recently tried and returned to amazon in order to get this drive from B&H. I will definitely look at B&H for my next purchase.

[1.63 lb] I recently purchased 2 Ultrastars; unfortunately, one turned out to be defective. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how easy the return process was. They fixed everything, and now the product is working perfectly. I appreciate the customer service and their willingness to make things right. Thanks B&H.

[1.63 lb] Based on a friend's recommendation, started using these a few years ago for my large scale data backup needs, especially in NAS systems. Love them, and rely on them.

[40 G / 2.0 ms] Though I work with three NVMe disks, I use these disks in pairs, online (in the machine, but usually powered off) and offline (in a canister in a different physical location). If I revisit a project, I can use the online ARCHIVE disk without significant hit to performance.
I've never had a failure in this use case. Warranty means little to me as I would never allow a disk to leave my location with data on it. I was taken back by the 10% price increase from the last unit that I bought to this one.
