Q: 1. Can I use a Nikon Teleconverter with a D7100 & Nikkor 80-400mmf/4.5-5.6 ED VR lens?

A: Bryan:All my gear comes from B&H. I have the D7000, the Nikkor 80x400, and the Kenko Tele-Plus converter at 1.4X. The combination is just fine. Here is the deal though that I was not prepared for, (my fault for not doing enough research). They say that a 1.4x costs 1 f-stop. This is correct, but only if you are nearer the 80mm range on the zoom. When you zoom out to 400mm, it will cost you 3 f-stops. The tele. will cost you f5.6 vs. f4 on the low end and likely f8 vs. f5.6 on the high end. This is assuming a 1.4x converter. Multiply that if you want to go 1.7x. It other words, I shoot birds and they move, and they hide in dark places. This makes the tele. a bit tough at 400mm due to the loss of 3 f-stops. I have to shoot too slowly to freeze them. For most other applications though, you should love it. I do. If you have the light and it doesn't move too much, this is a sweet combo.Best,Ray Swagerty- Charleston, SC

Q: 2. The Nikon 80-400mm how do you compare it to the Sigma 50-500mm in terms of sharpness

A: The new Nikon 80-400mm lens is very sharp and is sharper than the Sigma 50-500mm.

Q: 3. I have a Nikon D500 and wondered how this lens would be in low light for birding at all focal lengths?

A: Should be good. The lens is heavy, so I recommend a tripod or at least a monopod.

Q: 4. what does the conditions of refurbished item mean?

A: Refurbished Nikon lenses are lenses that have been used as demonstration models at trade shows and camera stores and they are also lenses that have been sold to customers and returned with a claimed defect or malfunction. Nikon repair technicians inspect the lenses, repair any observed malfunctions and then offer them to resellers to sell as refurbished. At B&H most refurbs are given 90 B&H warranties.

Q: 5. is it fast enough for sports like soccer?

A: The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens has a wide enough aperture for shooting most daylight situations, like a soccer game. If you are referring to the speed of the autofocus, it will depend mostly on the camera being used.

Q: 6. Which third party tripod collar is recommended/available for this lens?

A: The Kirk NC-80-400GN is a recommended collar for this lens. You can find it using the following link: http://bhpho.to/1afWycF.

Q: 7. Will this work on my entry level D3100?

A: Yes it will. This is an AF-S type lens which is what the D3100 requires in order for a lens to be fully compatible with it.

Q: 8. Is the Nikon 80 to 400 good on the Nikon D 850. I have the 28 to 300 so how much will I get using the 300 to 400

A: The Nikon 80-400 is a great lens for the D850. The extra 100mm could be really crucial for sports or wildlife photography.

Q: 9. Is this Lens compatible with Nikon Teleconverters?

A: The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens is compatible with the TC-14E II and TC-14E III teleconverters with restrictions, ( Autofocus is available only with cameras that offer f/8 support. These include the Z 7, Z 6, D5, D500, D4/D4S, Df, D850, D810/D810A, D800/D800E, D750, D600/D610, D7100, D7200 and D7500. For cameras that do not support f/8, teleconverters can be used without autofocus.). And the TC-17E II, TC-20E II and TC-20E III teleconverters will work on the lens without autofocus.

Q: 10. will the Sigma APO 2x EX DG teleconverter work with this lensethank you James

A: No it will not. Sigma (just as Nikon) teleconverters are only compatible with a specific list of lenses (there is a link in the overview of the product page on the converters showing the exact list of lenses). You could use Kenko brand teleconverters with this lens. See the link below for a recommended 2x converter from Kenko to use with this lens:http://bhpho.to/193ZSVW

[0.325 lb] I have used LensCoat for all my Long lenses for years. I have really sweaty hands. The improved grip offered by the cover as well as the protection from the dust and grim of the locations I shoot (often while backpacking or on safari). is a GREAT asset. Protection from bumps and dings is also a plus as I am often clambering over rocks and brush or in and out of a vehicle and the cover are a little more shock absorption.

[Neoprene] I decided to protect my new lens with a Lenscoat tree pattern cover. Well, if you have strong hands, installation would be easy. Hands with arthritis is another story. I did get it put on lens but it took some time. I left the last piece off as I often use the polarizing filter. All in all it serves a good purpose and looks pretty good out in the Everglades.

[Neoprene] This lens is hard to fit because of all the rotating pieces, but this cover does a great job. I bought it to replace the one by lenscoat (and get a darker color). It was designed with care, with cutouts so you can see the zoom setting and operate the switches directly instead of through clear plastic. I suppose the weather protection of the switches won't be as good, but operation is much easier. It is still slippery on the outside like lenscoat, so I will need to add rubber bands for better grip. It's a more thoughtful design and a better product, at a much better price.

[Neoprene] Good way to protect the lens and barrel from minor dings and bumps. Looks good too. Takes a little time to work the pieces onto the lens barrel and get into position, but looks good and stays in place.

[Neoprene] I mainly got this as I noted that birds would spook with my zoom lens. It was easy to set up. Like other reviewers stated, you cannot add the piece for the moving part of the zoom unless you want this fixed. I mainly got this to not spook the birds and it is sufficient.

[0.325 lb] A little pricey, but it protects and has a good grip.

[0.325 lb] This was easy to put on, and it does the job for protection and camouflage. The only drawback is that the zoom will not operate with that part of the lens covered, but the same would be true with any cover on this lens.
