Sound designers and synthesizer aficionados will rejoice over the Waldorf M 16 Voice, a four-part 16-voice hybrid wavetable synthesizer that hails back to the original Microwave synthesizer—complete with analog filters.

The dual-oscillator synthesizer features classic Microwave and modern Microwave II/XT sound generation modes with a total of 2048 patches, broken up into 16 banks of 128 sounds. Each sound set was produced by renown sound designers and includes classic Microwave sound sets such as MW1 Factory Sound Set, MW1 Soundpool 1-5, the fat-sounding Analogue and Bassco, as well as PPG Wave 2.3 sounds cleverly converted for the original Microwave. The M features an analog low-pass 24 dB/oct voltage-controlled filter (VCF is the SSI 2144 improved ladder type) with resonance and analog saturation, as well as a true stereo analog VCA with panning options. Modulation is available from four advanced envelope generators and two LFOs.

The rear panel features a 1/4" stereo headphone output, two 1/4" stereo main outputs, plus four 1/4" aux outputs. The full-sized 5-pin DIN MIDI connectors provide in, out, and thru. Additionally, the instrument features USB MIDI from the USB-B connector that works directly with your computer. An SD-card slot is available for system upgrades and back ups of all your favorite patches.

M offers two oscillators with independent wavetable generators. A wavetable is a table consisting of single waveforms. Each waveform is classified by its own special sound character.

The main difference of wavetable synthesis in comparison with other sound-generation principles is the ability to not only to play one waveform per oscillator but also to step through the wavetable via different modulations, thereby creating wavetable sweeps. The results can be dramatic—much more so than most sample playback systems can produce.

This principle offers powerful capabilities. To give some examples:

  • The wave envelope can modulate the position within the wavetable.
  • Each note on a keyboard can access a different wave of a wavetable.
  • An LFO can modulate the position within the wavetable. You can create subtle to drastic sound changes.
  • User-selected controllers, such as the mod wheel can change the position within the wavetable. When you turn the wheel while playing a chord, each note’s wave will be modified instantly.

In the Oscillator Mixer section, you control the volumes of both oscillators and the Noise generator. If an oscillator volume dial is turned fully counterclockwise, no signal is passed. The Ring Modulator is available when the Modern Microwave II mode is active.

M offers an analog low-pass filter with 24 dB/oct and resonance. This is a SSI 2144 ladder type with saturation.

M offers an a true stereo analog VCA with panning option. Right beside the VCA section, a glide function can be found.

M’s envelopes allow you to manipulate sound parameters via rate or timed modulations. M offers four independent programmable envelopes for every sound program:

  • VCF Envelope: This envelope is designed to control the VCF but can also be used for other modulations.
  • VCA Envelope: This envelope is designed to control the sound volume but can also be used for other modulations.
  • Wave Envelope: This envelope with 8 different times and levels (multisegment envelope) is designed to control the wave scanning for a wavetable but can also be used for other modulations.
  • Free Envelope: This envelope with 4 different times and levels (multisegment envelope) can be used freely to perform additional modulations on any module.

An envelope is started by pressing a key. It ascends to its maximum value at the rate determined by the Attack parameter. It then descends at the rate determined by the Decay value until it reaches the predetermined Sustain value. It remains at this value until the key is released. The envelope then descends to zero at the rate determined by the Release parameter.

In addition to the main oscillators, M is equipped with two low-frequency oscillators (LFOs) that can be used for modulation purposes. Each LFO generates a periodic waveform with adjustable frequency and shape.

A modulation can be described as a signal-generating unit's influence upon a sound parameter. The terms used in this context are Source and Destination. There is no Modulation matrix as in our other Waldorf synthesizers. We made a conscious decision to set up the modulation facilities directly on the corresponding display page, i.e. in the respective sections as Oscillators, VCF or VCA.

An arpeggiator is a device that splits an incoming chord into its individual notes and repeats them rhythmically. Different play modes can be defined for the arpeggiator to cover a wide range of applications.

[Analog] This amazing little unit is too good to be true. In its price range it blows away any soft synth version of the 70s/80s string machines. To me it has a lot of Oberheim/Roland/Mellotron sensibilities. So much right at your fingertips, being able to single out different instruments (cello, electric piano, etc), or combine them and add rich built-in effects for incredibly unique sounds. I couldn't wait to get my hands on the Streichfett the minute Waldorf announced it, and B&H made it happen well before any other online retailers began shipping them in the US. Danke schn, B&H!

[Analog] After a very long time away from analog synths, this was a great step back that brought many flashbacks. Includes easy to follow documentation to assemble, set up and start playing in no time.

[16 Voice] This Waldorf Streichfett In my opinion is well worth it! I have a 1978 ARP OMNI string synth and have to say this sounds just as good or even better. Plus it just works un like my old ARP sometimes. The Waldorf is easy to use, simple layout like older string synths, And the ensemble button makes it sound real rich, Plus you can split both sides (string/Solo) and make it like two synths running on different midi channels if you would like. plus it has 128 voice fully polyphonic Strings section and 8 voice solo section which is more than you would ever really need. Great synth to add to your collection!

[Analog] A surprisingly nice sounding analog string emulation! Few controls but considerate ones. The effects sections reverb is nice and open sounding for strings. Sits nicely in mixes so far. Plus, unlike some vintage machines, this one's already in stereo!

[4-Part] I previously reviewed the Moog Mavis negatively due to the lack of VCF out but I feel that this is an unfair reflection of the product (every synth is not the same and this is not the Werkstatt).

The Moog sound of this synth is very satisfying and fulfilling to experiment with (though I would like to figure out how to drive the added wave folding more aggressively), whether you're looking for a musical or more experimental sound. It's interesting that Moog decided to add some west coast sound with the wave folding (perhaps they may play with more in the future).

The utility features of this synth make it pretty useful for playing with other synths (like the Werkstatt). For more inspiration check out the Patching with Intention patch book for the Mavis, and the Mavis Exploration Patch Book by Lisa Bella Donna.

[16 Voice] Dr. Bob Moog once said When a pianist sits down and does a virtuoso performance, he is, in a technical sense, transmitting more information to a machine than any other human activity involving machinery allows.

He later refined this to Musical instruments provide the most efficient and refined interface between human and machine of anything we know.

Given the nearly infinitely nature of the evolving relationship between artist and instrument, the achievement of Moog Music evident in the Moog One, in terms of interface design, is nothing short of remarkable.

Not only have the minds at Moog succeeded in realizing Dr. Moog's dream of a fully analog poly-synth, they have done so in a way that makes the myriad of possibilities intuitive to the point of being nearly second-nature.

If you're looking for the inimitable Moog sound, in a package you may never outgrow, this is the One.

I've been enamored with and exploring music for more than half a century. I now have in my grasp sounds I previously only dreamed of...

Thank you Moog Music.

[4x Knob] The Waldorf Blofeld is a fierce virtual analog/wavetable synth with a powerful multi mode for serious studio use and live performance. I bought this synth over 10 years ago for a tour I was asked to play on. What I love so much about the Blofeld for what I use it for is its multi mode which allows key ranges or even just one note to specify a particular patch while leaving certain notes blank. For instance I have one shot synth sounds with mod wheel control that I trigger by slamming my hand on a D or G#. All the keys trigger but because the range is set to one note, only the single key voice sounds and of course you can pitch the keys up and down so that you don't just play D or G#. Also the synth UI is very intuitive and programming sounds is a breeze. The sound engine gets VERY deep but, if you spend time with it, you get accustomed quickly. For that first tour I did, I programmed my sounds quickly recreating the sounds off the record even though I didn't yet KNOW the sound of the Blofeld. It reacts as it should with so many options given wavetables and the mod matrix. The built in effects are excellent as well. I have read about people slamming the reverb but I totally love it. The sample option is very cool as well for loading user sample content in the oscillators and I fully intend to tour again with this primarily as a sample playback machine with added synth shaping control. Waldorf has a reputation and, with the Blofeld, they once again deliver.

[Analog] First of all, it's a prophet 5 that you can take everywhere reliably! Immediate sounds, intuitive and simple interface and build quality is the best.

Sounds huge and beautiful without much effort, super fun to play with.
