The Sabrent Rocket RGB USB-C M.2 SSD Enclosure Special Editionfrom Sabrent Rocket RGB USB-C M.2 SSD Enclosure Special Editionhas one drive slot that supports NVMe or SATA SSDs with an M.2 2230, 2242, 2260, or 2280 form factor. Designed for Windows, Mac, and Linux, but compatible with most systems that have a USB-C port, this enclosure connects to your host system using a 20 Gb/s USB-C 3.2 Gen 2x2 port. If your system doesn't support USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, this enclosure is backward compatible with 10 Gb/s USB 3.2 Gen 2 (3.2 Gen 1/3.1) and 5 Gb/s USB 3.2 Gen 1 (USB 3.1 Gen 1/3.0).

Thanks to plug-and-play compatibility, no additional drivers are required, while the enclosure operates using bus power and doesn't require any external power. Also featured are RGB LED lighting effects that alert users as to the drive's status, plus an aluminum body with thermal padding, which helps to optimize heat dissipation and keep things cool during intense workloads.

Note: To achieve maximum advertised speeds, please make sure your computer or host device is certified to support the 20 Gb/s USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 connection. Apple devices, including those with Thunderbolt/USB4, do not support 20 Gb/s USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 and will be limited to 10 Gb/s USB 3.2 Gen 2.

This enclosure breaks through the 10 Gb/s barrier to offer up to twice the bandwidth with USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20 Gb/s) connectivity. It's also backward compatible with 5 Gb/s and 10 Gb/s ports for extra flexibility, with UASP and TRIM support.

Don't end up with the wrong enclosure type for your SSD. The EC-RGBC supports both M.2 SATA and M.2 NVMe SSDs with M.2 2230, 2242, 2260, and 2280 form factors.

The enclosure is constructed out of aluminum with built-in thermal padding for enhanced heat dissipation to prevent drive throttling. It also looks cool, thanks to its status-informing RGB LED lighting effects.

This enclosure features plug-and-play compatibility with no additional drivers required. It also operates using bus power.

Designed for Windows, Mac, and Linux, but will work with other USB-C host devices.

[Aluminum] I purchased this to make an external boot drive for my 2015 MacBook Pro. This device is probably the fastest way to add external storage to my machine since the Thunderbolt 2 ports are far faster than the USB3 ports.

Since this Sabrent Thunderbolt 3 enclosure is self-powered, you can use the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter in reverse, making full use of the MacBook's Thunderbolt 2 port and getting super fast transfer speeds, making it suitable for use as a boot drive.

I don't have any benchmark utilities, but I copied a large VMware image from the internal Apple SSD to an external 2TB FireCuda 530 and saw an Activity Monitor peak write speed of 1.6GB/sec, which is super fast. The case gets a little warm, but that means that it is effectively sinking heat from the M2 drive.

I used this to successfully build and test a system upgrade to Mojave, and will continue to use this to occasionally run modern OS versions that I don't want to permanently upgrade to due to software compatibility issues with old apps I still need to run. Right now, it's Velcro'ed to the laptop lid and holds a 1TB drive waiting to test Catalina, so I can see which apps break before deciding if I want to take the plunge.

All in all, it's perfect as an external drive for my older MacBook Pro, it's well priced, and extremely well constructed. I'll continue to use it for the rest of the life of this machine, and it'll still be useful if I upgrade to a more modern machine later.

[Aluminum] Well constructed with clear instructions for installation. Some problems fitting the screws in the sides (obstructed bu motherboard objects) but I managed to get two of them snugly in place. Only time will truly tell but it seems well suited for its purpose.
