Q: 1. How does "timecode support" work? How is the timecode generated in the MixPre-6 synchronized with or connected to the camera(s) (Canon EOC Cxxx for example)? I presume when this is done correctly I don't need to record scratch audio on the cameras for sync'ing in post?

A: The MixPre can work with TC a couple different ways: You can set the 3.5mm TRS Aux Input as Timecode in (although that means you won't be able to use channels 5&6 for audio); You can set the 3.5mm TRS Stereo Output as timecode out (although that then means you won't be able to use your mixer's line out); or you can input timecode via the micro-HDMI if you connect your camera's video output (although I've had trouble with introducing interference noise messing around with the HDMI port). So, you've got a few options here. If you don't mind being tethered, you can connect your camera to the mixer and feed timecode one direction or the other. Of course, that will burn an input or output on your mixer and you'll be tied down, so that might not be preferable. The other option (that doesn't require more gear, and won't require you to burn an input/output) is to "jam" sync. Basically, before you start shooting, connect them up and jam timecodes to get them in lockstep. Then you can detach, and even change your settings on your mixer to get your inputs & outputs back. I'm not a huge fan of this method, because some devices lose their sync when you power off & change batteries, so if it's a complicated, hectic shoot and you lose sync for some reason, you might not know till later. Plus, if you've decided to use your 3.5mm in/outs for a different purpose, now you'll have to unplug things and menu-dive to re-jam, which may not be workable in a rush. The third option, which is what I'm planning on doing for my next shoot, is to use an external device (like a Tentacle Sync or UltraSync or Locket Box or Deity BPTRX) to feed consistent timecode into both devices. That way you can set your timecode on your TC boxes, then mount those to your devices and trust that they'll keep everybody marching to the beat of the same drum. For me, this is the best compromise, because I don't want to send TC out of my MixPre (because I need the stereo output for monitoring and I don't want to re-configure on set), and I don't need my aux inputs on 5 & 6, so I'm okay burning that input for my TC in. That said, there's still nothing wrong with getting a scratch track for reference on your camera. It's probably a good idea to have *some* reference audio there for a multitude of reasons. Hope this helps.

Q: 2. Can I use this as my Mac's computer mic for talking on Zoom, Discord, etc.?

A: While the Sound Devices MixPre-6 II 6-Channel / 8-Track Multitrack 32-Bit Field Recorder does not include a microphone component, it could be used along with a microphone as a computer interface for use with Zoom, Discord etc.

Q: 3. The Sound Devices Mixpre series has had quite a few quality control issues. I purchased the Mixpre 6 when it first came out and it never worked. Why should I be confident in any Sound Devices product?

A: Hi Scott, I am sorry to hear your MixPre-6 II "never worked." Can you please clarify what this means? Did you contact our support team to determine what/if anything is wrong with your unit?

Q: 4. Are the outputs balanced?

A: The MixPre-6 II analog output is an unbalanced 3.5mm port.

Q: 5. For a standard two camera angle and external sound shoot, how many Tentacle sync/other brand TC boxes are necessary? Two or three?

A: You would need one (1) Tentacle Sync E for each device that you plan to use for recording in your setup. In the case of two (2) cameras with one (1) Sound Devices MixPre-6 II 6-Channel / 8-Track Multitrack 32-Bit Field Recorder, you would need three (3) Tentacle Sync E units.

Q: 6. Hi Is it possible to use Channel Knobs to Adjust ISO Levels in 32-Bit float? BR

A: Thank you for the immediate response. I asked this because in my MIxpre 6 in Custon mode I have full control of the gain level up to 96dB (76 plus 20 dB), and the most important thing I can see the meter view at the LCD With the series II, which can be see (always talking about ISO track in 32 Bts) One more time thanks BR Renzo

Q: 7. I'm primarily interested in using the MixPre as an audio interface. Will a MacBook Pro provide enough power over USB-C or not?

A: Yes, the Sound Devices MixPre-6 II 6-Channel / 8-Track Multitrack 32-Bit Field Recorder can be bus-powered by a MacBook Pro.

Q: 8. How "Quiet" are the preamps behind the 3.5mm Aux input?

A: About as quiet as quiet can be.

Q: 9. Is the L mount battery sled included with the MixPre-6 II? or would I need to buy it separately?

A: Only the 4 AA is included. This is the recommended optional L-battery sled: Sound Devices MX-LMount Battery Sled for MixPre-3, MixPre-6 & MixPre-10T B&H # SOMXLMOUNT: https://bhpho.to/36kjkOB

Q: 10. Is this recorder capable to solo and mute channels to the headphone out, while recording?

A: Hi Alejandro. Yes, both mute and solo are available while recording. Please note that mute will also mute it from the currently recording tracks.

[Download] I am an on again off again filmmaker and have had my hand in creative media for 17 years. I am also INCREDIBLY picky about my gear. I don't have the budget to get my dream everything, but I do research and pick the best I can for my price range. I was on the fence about this recorder since I have a Zoom H6 that has served me well. Five minutes after opening the box, all buyers remorse and trepidation melted away. This is a serious audio recording device that will up your game on any project. 32 bit float is nice, but the really nice features are the little things. Monitoring being one. The headphone preamp is leagues better than my H6. The tactile feel of the controls is buttery smooth. The metadata tagging tools are a bit cumbersome but have become essential to my process. I have thrown a lot at this little recorder and have never been let down once. Sound Devices higher end models are known as industry standard, but the MixPre is nothing to sneeze at. It will serve you well. My only real regret is not springing for the MixPre 10!

Happy recording!

[Download] It may be a little large for the mixpre-6, but it is a very well made bag.

[2 Instances] Best field recorder in this price range, and punches well above its weight in regards to sound quality, flexibility and build quality.

Used this as my main recorder for a few features and tons of small jobs in between.

Its very easy to use, the preamps are very quiet and have tons of headroom, even before you push 32bit files. Time code is rock solid and I've jammed this to an Ambient Nanolockit for 12 hours a day with no drift.

OS is very easy to navigate and the Wingman App is great. 6 inputs is very flexible for small productions and the only real thing it's "missing" would be another stereo output, but again for the size and price it evens out.

The battery life is a non-issue because there is no recorder with this much power that can reliably run off AAs; they're a backup. The upside is it runs off inexpensive USB battery banks so you can run this for 15 hours or so with a $50 battery.

It's not a replacement for an 8 series, but it would make a great backup to that unit, and it's the clear winner compared to anything from Zoom/Tascam in the price range.

[2 Instances] I upgraded to the MixPre-3 II from a Zoom H4N. The interface is great and it's easy to use. The 32-bit float recording format makes it better to record in the field not having to worry about gain.

[Download] I can easily fit my Mixpre-6 with the NPF battery plate, a large battery and 2x lav receivers with room to spare.

Its well designed and thought out with good access where you want it.

[2 Instances] I own the Zoom H6 recorder and when looking to upgrade I first purchased the Zoom F-6 recorder. The specs for the Zoom F-6 looked great and I liked how one could attach NP-F batteries without needing a sled adapter. But when it came time to make the initial configuration changes I encountered a user interface like something from the 1980's.

The Sound Devices has a truly intuitive interface with its color touch screen and overall configuration and settings layout and menu structure. I also liked being able to easily gang two of the pots so for stereo mics I only needed to adjust one dial to change the gain of both channels.

The primary defects in terms of its design is having the SD card slot blocked by any sled that is attached and having the On/Off switch very difficult to access when a USB-C power cable is attached.

On the plus side the USB-C port works well to power the MixPre for more than a dozen hours with a single power bank. The MixPre also has the copy to USB so a thumbdrive and collect the files from the USB-A port on the recorder.

[Download] The unit is great. I have had it a month now and used it on multiple projects. Still waiting for a timecode generator to test the Jam sync with the Komodos. I added the HiRose power plate to it for D-Tap and it worked well. My first test with with 4 AA batteries and 1 phatom powered mic, it killed brand new Duracell AA's in 20 minutes! Luckily there are a dozen different ways to power it. Their support is very responsive when you have questions.
