Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Where do i buy replacement hard drives?

A: The Oyen Digital Fortis 5C 110TB 5-Bay USB 3.2 Gen 2 External Drive Array (5 x 22TB) supports 3.5" SATA hard drives, such as B&H # SEST24000NT2.

Q: 2. If I start with 3-4 HDDs set up in RAID 5, will I be able to add HDDs for storage later without having to do anything else?

A: Drives cannot be added to a RAID 5 array without rebuilding the array. If you need to expand the storage pool of the array, the best option is to backup your data and then delete and rebuild the volume with the additional drive(s) included.

Q: 3. can i use this as a raid?

A: The yen Digital Mobius Pro 5C Enclosure does not have RAID built in. However, you may use your operating system's RAID feature or use 3rd party software RAID.

Q: 4. What specific kind / brand of drives are included in the pre-configured options?

A: The Oyen Digital Fortis 5C 40TB 5-Bay External Drive Array with SoftRAID 8 Premium Kit, B&H # OY5FU3C40TV8, includes five Toshiba Enterprise 8TB 7200RPM hard drives. The specific part number of the Toshiba drive is not specified by Oyen Digital.

Q: 5. Can I add drives over time with a RAID configuration?

A: You would need to rebuild the RAID array every time you add a new drive to the Oyen Digital Fortis 5C 5-Bay USB-C External Drive Enclosure if you wish to add more capacity to the RAID.

Q: 6. When connected to my Mac, will this be one large drive, or 5 individual drives?

A: This Oyen Digital Fortis 5C enclosure comes configured as JBOD, so your computer would see each drive individually. With the Disk Utility software on mac, it can be formatted as a RAID, so it will function as one large drive. When setting it up as a RAID, there are options for data mirroring (RAID 1), data striping (RAID 1), or data parity (RAID 5).

Q: 7. Is this a hardware RAID? thank you

A: NO!

Q: 8. each slot can support 24tb each ??

A: The Oyen Digital Mobius Pro 5C 5-Bay USB Type-C External Drive Array Enclosure can support up to five 3.5" SATA drives of any capacity. You can indeed install five 24 TB drives, like the model linked here: https://bhpho.to/3Aw40Dv

[1x 3000 rpm Fan] This is my first ever RAID setup and it's painful to think I waited so long to go this route (15+ years of using individual external HDDs and SSDs).

I loaded this thing with 8x 16TB IronWolf Pro drives and setup a RAID 5 (128TB = 112TB total storage with 1 drive for redundancy/recovery).

The speeds I am getting with this thing average 750-800MB/s write and 1,300-1,400MB/s read. Note that you MUST use 8 total drives to achieve higher speeds like this, I see a lot of people complaining they are getting slow speeds, but they are usually using only 4 or so drives, or 5,400RPM drives.

I can easily playback 6K R3D files from my Red Komodo as well as all filetypes, resolutions and frame rates from my Sony FX3.

Definitely happy with this purchase and would recommend to any video editors who need speed, but also care about protecting their data!

[30.4 dBA] Nicely made solid drive enclosure. It's about as quiet as one could ask for, even with the back of the unit sitting next to me.

[156 W] Awesome device to access your HD as JBOD. Fast, easy and quick!
The fans provided ample air pass through and they are hot swappable.
Everything about this is great and very cost effective.

[1x 3000 rpm Fan] Small note for Windows users: If you plug this in without filling all the drive slots, it will reserve up to 5 drive letters anyway; I believe this behavior is to accommodate hot-swapping.

Other than that, nothing to complain about. Love the dual fans.

[1x 3000 rpm Fan] Replaced my Synology DS214SE (older) with this Oyen Digital Mobius Pro 5C. I can now use my real Backup software & know where it's going & have real access. NAS Software is difficult! & is slower than molasses in January! I also do not need RAID or network access. Small hit, but consistent 38 MB/s with a 6' USB cable isn't bad. This unit is quiet & doesn't seem to be running hot. Have 4 drives in it right now 4tb, 4tb, 12tb & a 2tb. Backing 750gb to the 12tb right now. Will be back 9tb to there later. So far no dropouts or errors & the drive is almost luke-warm.

[1x 3000 rpm Fan] I installed 3 large disks, 2 x 18 TB and 1 x 24 TB, for use 24/7 recording security camera footage. Connected via USB-C to a new computer with an Intel i7-14700 CPU. Each disk is recording 4-5 MB per second.

Disk installation was easy. No noticeable fan noise. No need or desire for any RAID setup - running as JBODs. Wanted 5 bays for future expansion.

No problems or hiccups so far.

[100 TB] There are cheaper enclosures out there, most notably USB based ones, but the Thunderbay units are well worth the extra cost. The drives show up as direct access storage devices, and are hot swappable. The performance is great, and there's enough power delivery to handle eight high density drives.

I use ZFS with these units, and have two daisy chained together. When hooked up to a NUC, a high performance NAS with good performance and expandability is achieved without headache.

[1x 3000 rpm Fan] I'm impressed with the price per terabyte for this unit when compared to comparable hardware. So far it has performed as expected. It's not the fastest drive, but I need it for archival, so it's totally satisfactory from a speed perspective, but awesome on capacity. I didn't RAID the drives -- just plugged it and used the 5 internals as 20TB each. I did have issues transferring files from a Mac Journaled drive to the native ExFAT, but, since formatting to match the source, it's been smooth sailing.
