The dark bronze Microtech Gefell UM 930 Multi-Pattern Condenser Microphoneis a multi-pattern large-diaphragm condenser microphone offering ultralow noise and flexible pickup responses for precise capture of vocals and instruments such as strings, percussion, and guitars in recording facilities and radio studios.

It features a dual-capsule design that yields five selectable polar patterns—omnidirectional, cardioid, wide cardioid, supercardioid, and figure-8, making it equally well suited for use as a main mic or as a part of stereo and mid-side configurations. The transformerless circuitry incorporates a transistor amplifier and produces only 7 dBA of self-noise.

The UM 930's high sensitivity, standard 3-pin XLR output connector, and 48V phantom powering method ensure reliable performance with a variety of mic preamps. An MH 80 mic holder is supplied along with a hard case to house the microphone and the holder.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What is the Signal to Noise ratio?

A: The manufacturer has not provided a spec for signal to noise ratio. A complete list of specs for the UC4-B can be found on pages 16-17 in the user manual: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/506154.pdf

Q: 2. Can I use a 6DJ8 in my Rode K2?

A: RODE has installed a hand selected and graded 6922 twin-triode valve. We would recommend no other tube as a replacement.

Q: 3. Will it plug into SLR's (Nikons)?

A: The Senal SCM-660 will not plug into SLR's. You'll need a mixer or interface box to do so; i.e. B&H# SOMIXPRED, AZFMX22.

Q: 4. Will I still be able to use my external Audio Engine speakers when I'm on a web conference? In other words, will the Nano eliminate any sound feedback?

A: The Nano was not designed with DSP meant to cancel out noise. While you could connect the headphone output of the mic to your Audio Engine speakers, feedback could be a potential issue. We would recommend using headphones if you are using the Yeti, or perhaps look at a conferencing style speakerphone for noise cancellation such as BH #YAYVC200B.

Q: 5. will this work with an iPad or iPhone?

A: This mic is designed to work with a computer only. The Shure MOTIV MV51 Digital Large-Diaphragm Condenser Microphone (Silver) ,B&H # SHMV51A is a good example of a model that can work with a computer or an iOS device.

Q: 6. The "Key Features" at the top say Max SPL = 140db, but the Specs say it is 130db. Which is correct?

A: The published specification is correct for the Senal SCM-660 Large-Diaphragm Multi-Pattern Condenser Microphone (BH # SESCM660). It is 130 dB, but will be 140 dB with the -10 dB pad engaged. See the page 10 of the user guide here: https://bhpho.to/3WFcOhz.

Q: 7. Will this mic work with a chromebook?

A: Yes it will work, the cable provided in the box is USB-A, if the computer does not have USB-A the adapter bellow will convert it to USB-C https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1128928-REG/apple_mj1m2am_a_usb_c_to_usb_adapter.html?sts=pi&pim=Y

Q: 8. Would this mic work in a large group of 15 people arranged in a circle with this mic in the center of the circle? Or do the players have to be within a foot of the mic?

A: While this mic has an omni-directional pickup pattern option and could pick up sound 360 degrees around it, however distant those people are from the mic is how it would sound. As well, you would certainly pick up a large amount of room noise. Typically, for a quality recording you would want the source of the audio to be no more than 12'' from the mic itself.

Q: 9. How does this microphone compare to Sennheiser MK8 and Neumann TLM 102 & 107?

A: All four mics are large diaphragm condenser style with a frequency response range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz. The Senal SCM-660, Sennheiser MK 8, and Neumann TLM 107 offer multiple patterns to pick up audio from different directions, while the TLM 102 is cardioid only. The SCM-660 offers three patterns (cardioid, figure-8, omnidirectional) while the MK 8 and TLM 107 offer five patterns (cardioid, figure-8, omnidirectional, supercardioid, subcardioid/wide cardioid) for accommodating a wider variety of applications.

Q: 10. model number?

A: The Blue Yeti Nano Multi-Pattern USB Condenser Microphone(Blackout) has a manufacturer number of 988-000400.

[Side Address] I love this thing. Perfect for podcasting and voiceover. It comes with a great carrying case for transporting. The quick switch high pass filter is a great touch. Had to do some ADR on a low budget film I was making and couldnt afford to go into a sound studio. I was able to get the job done with this mic at my apartment with very pleasing results.

[Mono] Wow! Just wow! I bought my Aston Spirit, reaching out from AKG, Blue, and Neumann, to a new mic brand after such outpouring love in reviews of the Aston Origin. I needed a multi-pattern mic that was versatile. The box seems inexpensive and it did require a separate shockmount. (It has one built-in but it mounts the mic directly to the stand. Not terrible but not versatile.) The Spirit was amazing for male and female vocals of alternative, pop, classical, and operatic vocals. I tracked my acoustic guitar and it was astounding, as well as for my violin and cello. I would say this could stand up to most upper echelon mics in versatility and clarity. Even as a room mic the Spirit sounded stellar! It was perfect for small room recording, large space studio, ambient sound recording, and close-up instrumental recording. I love using the Spirit. It is truly a favorite of mine as microphones go.

[Polar Pattern] Got while it was 40% off - great sound. Much preferred over the TLM 102/103. It's super sensitive to plosives/handling noise - so that's been a learning curve but I am very happy I made the investment.

[Phantom Power] Let me try to break this down as short as I can. I had been saving and dreaming of acquiring a u87ai for years. Recently I had clients not pleased with the colorization my mojave audio 201 fet mic was giving my vocals for narration duties. So I started thinking of buying a tlm 103 after having returned it a year ago because it was just to harsh for my voice. Although it was silky and extremely detailed, It just was to sibilant for me and sounded harsh in the higher frequencies for me. So researching I came across Gefell and how it is actually the Neumann family still in charge of Gefell while modern Neumann mics are made by senheisser. So I took a chance, and ordered the m930. Wow oh wow. It takes the best of the tlm 103 and does it even better. It's just as silky, and much more pleasing. I think of it actually closer to the u87ai but without the boxy midrange that mic is notorious for. It sits between the u87ai and tlm 103, but sits closer to the u87ai. I think my u87ai desires have been put to rest with the m930. It's so clean, clear, and silky. My voice has a lot of natural color, so the m930 works wonderful not adding any more and actually makes my voice sound much more pleasing. I wish I would've gotten this mic sooner when I first started doing voice work. It's compact, with a big open natural sound. I'm extremely happy with my purchase.

[Phantom Power] These are extremely well-built, and so is the shock mount. The case is excellent too; rigid. It could have better (dual) latches for people like me who worry about a single latch opening at an inopportune time. The fact that it comes with either and both of these already makes the mic a bargain. 10/10 for quality of build, and that includes the actual condenser, which is gold plated. The sound is Rich, but not too rich or bassy. Neutral for male or female I would say. Specs tell you it's very good, but for 20x more $ you can get ever so slightly slightly better. Impedance is great for long runs, and not common at this price point.

[Phantom Power] I made a big mistake when I bought this mic. They were on sale and I bought three; I should have bought six. These mics are an astounding value. We have a live Internet news show called On Target Radio that broadcasts via Facebook and YouTube. I bought three to cover our engineer, my co-host and myself. I should have bought an additional three for in-studio guests. The difference between these mics and our old ones is nothing short of wonderful and the multi-pattern makes them very versatile. If they go on sale again I'm buying three more.

[Phantom Power] Good durable mic. I like use it on kick, bass and mono piano overhead. Quite bright. There is a boost around 4kHz and it helps mic to sound open and articulate on far distance from sound source. May be too bright on different vocals. However, sounds very good. ()

[Mono] In other words, excellent! Outstanding! I went back and forth between this mic and Neumann U87, having tried the TLM 103 in a similar price range and having been disappointed with the 103's tinny and thin response. If you're looking for a vocal mic, look no further. At half the price (or less) of a U87, you can have an authentic German large diaphragm cardioid condenser mic that is extremely quiet, with beautiful, buttery sound, and which is very forgiving and much more compact then the U87 form factor. I use this mike in a whisper room sound booth, primarily for voiceover and I can tell you the difference I am hearing, even between my trusty, industry stalwart 416: the noise floor is lower, with less detectable mouth sounds, and it feels like the dynamic range is greater than the short shotgun, with absolutely no boomy booth sound. I'm in love with this mike and I think you will be too.
