Add vintage sound and a vintage look to your live-sound and studio-recording setup with the Universal Audio SD-7, a hypercardioid dynamic microphone featuring a rugged all-metal construction and a cool retro look. The SD-7's hand-selected dynamic capsule can handle extreme SPL, while the tight, hypercardioid polar pattern greatly rejects off-axis sounds, making the mic ideal for percussive instruments with mid-frequency range, such as toms, drums, horns, guitar/bass amp cabinets, and more.

The SD-7 uses UA's award-winning Hemisphere Microphone Modeling technology to give you the authentic sound of iconic dynamic mics from Shure, Sennheiser, AKG, and more, in real time, with Apollo or natively in your DAW (using the included Hemisphere plug-in). You can also shape the sound of your recordings using filter, proximity, and axis controls—even after tracking—and get album-ready results, fast.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this microphone put out a balanced signal?

A: I have a Pyle PDM MIC 58 which essentially the same mic as this one. The mic does not come wired as a balanced mic but I found this video where you can perform a simple mod. Go to youtube and search for Pyle PDMIC78 Microphone - SM-57 Knockoff it's posted by a guy named Bob H.If you are making a short run (less than 20 feet) to your mixer or input source, you may not even need to balance it though. I have been using mine with the supplied 15 foot xlr to 1/4 mono cable and it sounds great into my Zoom H1 recorder. This is a great value and instead of everyone asking why this is so much less than the Shure SM57, the question should be why is the SM57 so expensive?I have one of these in my cart and will be getting one with my next order to go along with the PD MIC 58.

Q: 2. I'm getting a lot of handling noise with this mic. Does anyone have a suggestion/best practices on how to minimize, or eliminate, the handling noise? I almost can't use the audio recorded because of this issue.

A: Swap out the XLR cable. The mic shouldn't be generating much handling noise in normal use. I'm on my second one now after taking my original one around the world doing interviews for six years, and finally retired it. The most likely cause is a bad connection inside the XLR connector on the mic end of the cable, since that's where most of the stress is placed in routine use.

Q: 3. Not going into a PA system. Will it work ok with putting a XLR connector on going into a board for talk back?

A: It should work without issues. The paging functionality it's important when you are picking up the Amp, witch is the device that attenuate the music when the pagin relay on the mic it's activated.

Q: 4. can I use the WM-625S with a 70 volt system?

A: Since this dynamic microphone requires no power it may be integrated into a 70 volt distributed audio system.

Q: 5. does it come with the mic holder like shown in the picture?

A: Yes the Senal ENG-18RL comes in the box with the microphone clip, foam windscreen and even a carrying zippered pouch.

Q: 6. Does this record in stereo

A: This is not a stereo microphone, it only gives out a mono signal.

Q: 7. I want to hook this up to a desktop base station to communicate via FSR/GMSR. The mic connection to my desktop radio is 2.5mm (female) stereo. Could I use a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter (4 conductor), and then pair that to a 4-pole 3.5mm male to AV 4 pin screw solderless shield connection? Of course, apply heatshrink over the solderless shield to reduce chance of corrosion and better secure the bond.

A: This mic was not designed to be connected to that style of mic connection, and any attempt to connect multiple adapters can not be guaranteed to work. With relay contacts and possible impedance mismatches being potential issues, I would not recommend it.

Q: 8. Does push to talk mean the default is for the mic to be off and a user needs to hold the button down when talking? Or does it toggle on and off?

A: The Bogen DDU250 Desktop Dynamic Gooseneck Microphone has a programmable switch that can be set for either push-to-lock or push-to-talk operation. Push-to-talk is a momentary function that engages the mic only when the button is pressed and held. As soon as the button is released, the mic switches off. Push-to-lock allows the switch to be locked in the on position so the mic is active until the switch is pressed again to turn the mic off.

Q: 9. Will this work with an XLR terminal plug adapter using the un-terminated wires? Like with the Rolls XLM113 3-Pin XLR Male Termination Plug for Bare Wire Connection. I read it has 4 wires and not sure what the 4th wire is for.

A: It wont work as a push to talk function, however it may work as an always on.

Q: 10. Is this mic compatible with Sennheiser ew 100 g3 wireless transmitter?

A: The best way to use this microphone with that system is to buy a Sennheiser plug on transmitter that runs on the same frequency as your system.

[Hypercardioid] I read a lot of reviews of this preamp which complained about the lack of headroom and tendency to distort the signal easily, producing a wooly, dark, or muddy tone. If you are looking for a clean, all-purpose preamp with very little character then this is not what you are looking for. However, if you are after a warm, dreamy tube-driven sound then this is a great low-price preamp to add to your arsenal. It's become my favorite preamp for a classic acoustic guitar tone paired with a beyer ribbon mic-- beautiful warm, woody sound with a little gentle tube compression. Happiest I've ever been with an acoustic guitar.

[Mic Modeling] I recently purchased a Yamaha M7CL Digital Audio Console and needed an affordable talkback microphone. I use Audio-Technica wireless microphones at church and have been pleased with their reliability and affordability. Most Yamaha digital consoles do not include a built-in talkback mic, so this was a great choice for talkback because it plugs directly in to the talkback mic input in front of the console and the gooseneck bends out of the way when not in use.

[Mic Modeling] I needed a better mic than what we had for speaking events. This gave increased clarity and volume. Feedback was also noticeably lessened. In fact, the only feedback I've gotten was because the monitor speaker was bouncing sound off of a cement wall back at the mic. Other than that, it's been great and well worth the price.

[End Address] I've recorded one audiobook with this mic and I love it. No need for a popfilter, it's a very forgiving mic but still gives a great full sound, I started with the AT 4033CL and this mic sounds everybit as good with out picking up dogs barking a block away. I'm half way done with my second project and I'm not going to add any post work to it, no need. The shock mount is a cheap feeling polymer plastic but its held up great and has a quick release that is usefull. It does take allot of gain to push this mic I use a FetHead with a Clarett 2pre set at 7 to get about -3db of head room in Logic pro X with a floor of around -60 to -55.
