A: I own this lens and while I don't shoot birds, I shoot people and its important to have sharp well focused eyes.This is a tack sharp lens...but it does not have image stabilization. So when shooting hand held, I recommend shooting at a 500 shutter speed so there is no motion blur.

A: It depends upon where you are shooting from. If you're in the main stands, 200mm is about right, but f/2.8 is right on the border of being a little slow. If you have access to the baseline, I'd go with an 85mm f/1.8, 100mm f/2, or a 135mm f/2. The 18-135mm f/2.5-5.6 is too slow (dark) for basketball in most gyms. The light in them isn't bright enough.
