Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this lens have auto-focus capability?

A: No, the Zeiss Otus line of lenses are strictly manual focus lenses, as would be the Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F.

Q: 2. What adapter would I use for this lens on my SONY NEX FS 700?Would a sony LA-EA2 mount work?

A: The Sony NEX-FS700R Super 35 Camcorder body uses Sony's E-mount that gives you the flexibility to use a wide variety of E-mount NEX or Sony A-mount Alpha} lens via the optional LA-EA1/ LAEA3 mount adapters. You can also use 35mm SLR and DSLR lenses or professional cinema lenses with the use of optional third party adapters. The Nikon F Mount 55mm f/1.4 Otus Distagon T Lens from Zeiss would require a Nikon to E mount adapter and would not be compatible with the Sony LA-EA1 or LA-EA3 adapters. The MTF Services Ltd Nikon G to Sony E Mount Adapter allows you to attach any Nikon-mounted lens to the Sony NEX-3, NEX-5, NEX-VG10, NEX-VG20, and the Sony NEX FS-100/700 cameras. It is compatible with DX and 35mm format lenses and also supports lenses with or without aperture rings. http://bhpho.to/1pe97dmThe Sony 50mm f/1.4 Carl Zeiss Planar T* ZA Lens is a normal-length prime lens that is compatible with both full-frame and APS-C-sized image sensors. This lens' construction integrates two glass-molded aspherical elements within its design to provide high image quality while reducing distortions and aberrations. This lens is compatible with a LA-EA1 adapter. http://bhpho.to/1nNMc7p

Q: 3. A lens this good, you should rightfully list camera bodies as an accessory. I'm a Canon guy for 40 years, but if I buy this lens, Nikon might be the best choice of camera. What is the best match?

A: Probably this answer is too late for you, but I'm being careful about evaluation of this lens. I'm using it on a Nikon D800e, and it's performing beautifully, especially for night shots where the specular highlights are well contained and don't seem to bloom on the sensor . The only drawbacks I've found is it's not macro, it's not weather sealed, and the cost has diminishing returns. I understand the trade-off for not having macro focus; increasing the focus range would reduce the precision of focus in the normal range, and also probably complicate the movement of the internal elements. Not sealing it against moisture makes sense if the intended use is in the studio.Still, there is some truth to the hype. The coupling to the in-focus indicator is better than any other manual focus lens I own including a Zeiss Makro-Planar T* 2/100. Because digital cameras are dependent on auto-focus, they do not come with optical focusing aids. Focusing is accomplished either normally through the viewfinder--something I find difficult to do with precision--using live view--which can be done with a tripod and relatively static subjects--or with the focus indicator. The clarity and contrast of the image produced by this lens allows it to be used with the focus indicator on the D800e, an important practical feature.

Q: 4. I understand that the focusing screen of D810 cannot be changed. Without a central telemeter, how can one check proper focusing?

A: If you are concerned with focus on the D810, you could use the Nikon DG-2 Eyepiece, which will magnify the viewfinder by 2x: http://bhpho.to/10diQr9

Q: 5. Hi.Is the lens hood integrated or separate?Thanks.

A: The lens hood is separate and is included with the lens.

Q: 6. What lens adapter do I need to use for Sony FX6 camera?

A: The ZEISS Otus 55mm f/1.4 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F is a manual lens. So a good Manual adapter that works with E mount cameras would be this one, https://bhpho.to/3GAsMTX .

Q: 7. Canon focus screens

A: There are no interchangeable focus screens for the 5dmkiii. There is a focus confirmation beep with the center af point. If you have a eos1-n, 1-v, eos 3, or even a 5d up to mkii, they all accept the same screens. There is a split image/ microprism Fresnel (Ec-B) that would be helpful for those cameras; it is sold by B&H, but it is on backorder now. With 5dmkii just use af confirmation, or shoot in Live View and magnify to confirm focus. The microprism fresnel's are all in the Center anyway so it's the same deal. Wide open handheld with a figity subject is a tough. This lens is a powerful tool, but it does take a certain dedication to work with it. The results are worth the effort. Good luck!

Q: 8. Will this lens work on the BMPCC6K? Do I need a Speedbooster?

A: Yes, the ZEISS Otus 1.4/55 ZE will work with the BMPCC6K camera. Given the APS-C format, the effective focal length of the lens is equivalent to approximately 82mm.

Q: 9. How un-sealed against weather is the Otus? I have a Milvus 15/2.8, and now an Otus 28/1.4. The 50 or 55 is next, which I plan to use for landscape and astro-pano with my 810A. I don't plan to be in rainstorms or sandstorms, but the lack of weather-sealing has me a bit concerned, given its expense what was Zeiss thinking?, and the fact that I will be taking pics in marine shore and humid environments.

A: The ZEISS Otus lenses are not weather sealed. As long as the lens is not exposed directly to rain or dusty environments, there is little risk of damage. When used in high humidity conditions, care should be taken to acclimate the lens to prevent internal fogging of the elements. Storage of the lens under these conditions should be done in sealed bags using a desiccant.

Q: 10. If I made an order today, is there an estimated time to receive it? Thanks.

A: If you were to order this lens today a realistic time to receive it would be 6-8 weeks.

[0.37 lb] I've used it exclusively on the Tamron 28-75 and sometimes a Tiffen Black Mist, i have no issue. Some reviews may be exaggerating its issues, but some are facts and other are minor hustles.

[0.37 lb] I'm no filter snob, but this seems like an outstanding build quality to me, the case they send for it is a wonderful touch as well. Feels nice, looks nice, does what its supposed to do, great case. What's not to love K&F makes good, reasonably priced products; and I've never had an issue with anything purchased from them, this is not the exception.

[Glass] Purchased the 95mm version for my OM 150-400 lens. Even using it atop the Olympus protective filter there's no loss in image quality. Also very effective polarization, more so than other more expensive polarizers.
