Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is it possible to set-up two of the bays/drives as a raid1 volume and the other two drives as a different raid1 volume?

A: Yes, the QNAP TS-473A-8G-US 4-Bay NAS Enclosure does support multiple RAID families within its 4-bay architecture.

Q: 2. How many PCIE expansion slots does it have available?

A: The QNAP TS-873A 8-Bay NAS Enclosure with QSW-1105-5T Network Switch, BH # QNTS873ASW5T, has two PCIe slots available.

Q: 3. Does this require an active TB3 cable? Or will a passive one also work?

A: This device can work with a passive Thunderbolt 3 connection, so long as the wire is within the length limit of passive TB3.

Q: 4. Is it possible to connect this directly into a Qnap NAS (MacBook Pro M1 - this adapter - NAS) - or does it have to go into a switch? Thanks

A: You can connect the adapter to a 10 Gb/s-capable switch, NAS, or other device using a cable that supports 10 Gb/s data speeds

Q: 5. How many of the 8 drives are lost to Parity etc when set to Raid 5? I'm wondering, how many are available for User Data?

A: When using the QNAP TS-873A 8-Bay NAS Enclosure with QSW-1105-5T Network Switch (BH #QNTS873ASW5T) in a RAID 5 setup, only one of the 8 drives would be used for parity.

Q: 6. Will this work with Thunderbolt 2 Macs via a TB3 to TB2 adapter?

A: This will not work with a TB3 to TB2 adapter.

Q: 7. How bad is the fan noise?

A: The device has no fans. It uses passive heat dissipation for keeping cool(er).

Q: 8. I have a QNAP server with Thunderbolt 3, can I connect this unit to my QNAP trough Thunderbolt 3 and use the LAN for connect to the switch 10gbe?

A: This item is only compatible with direct connection to Windows, macOS /OS X. QOS would not be supported.

Q: 9. How much bus power is required for this unit?

A: The manufacturer does not specify, however a device such as this can range anywhere from 5-10 W maximum.

Q: 10. is this backwards compatible with THUNDERBOLT 2?

A: The QNAP Thunderbolt 3 to 10 Gb/s SFP+ Adapter is not rated for use with a bandwidth bottleneck via an adapter, such as Thunderbolt 2 would present.

[Layer 2] I have this and a smaller one at the other end of the house. I have 10 G between. All my 2.5 stuff came up to speed too. I am happy with my purchase.

[Layer 2] I was looking for a network switch for my office that could handle 10-gigabit connections over RJ-45 (to connect my PC and Synology NAS) but it was difficult to find one that didn't have negative reviews either due to heat or noise. I gave this switch a shot and it's worked extremely well so far. You can set it to use a quiet profile for the fans so that it's not quite as loud and it's been very reliable and performant so far. I can easily transfer While the unit is certainly not silent (the fans are small and can produce a high-pitch hum at times), it is quiet enough to be placed in my office and blends in with the fan noise from other devices like the NAS. Unless it's under a high load or I'm specifically listening for it, I don't even notice it. With larger transfers, I have seen transfer speeds of 550 MB/s to an SSD on my NAS, which is about what I would expect.

[16K] I am normally a person that uses enterprise equpment like Cisco, Brocade, etc.

Wanting high performance hardware with all the features expected in a professional environment.

Getting a consumer switch means giving up a lot in some situations.

I just recently upgraded to Wifi 7 and needed a switch for Multi-Gig RJ45 and instead of getting a switch with just enough ports for similar cost, this switch had by far the most 10gb connectivity for the price and it was also managed to allow me to do mose of the basic things I want to do.

It runs completly silent, and nice and cool.
For the average home this might be expensive but for someone who needs it, they know this is actually pretty cheap.

[Metal] A breeze to setup and use.
I don't have a lot of experience setting up networks but this switch is so user friendly.
The login interface is super clean looking and easy to navigate.

[5.045 lb] This is small but mighty. Fast internal bus, really simple user interface (it’s a switch, but it has good stuff like bonding that is really simple to set up).
Easy 10.

[9000 Bytes] The QNAP does extremely well using auto negotiation on my mixed network. All 10 Gb network cards (OWCPCIE10Gb) from B&H run at rated speeds. Direct 10 Gb transfers between (2) computers with NVMe drives averages slightly over 1 GigaByte/s. Primarily purchased for large backup image and rendered file transfers between multiple computers and a backup server using CAT6a (10'-30') and CAT8 (95'-120') cables. No dropouts during multiple transfers taking place. Plays well with the 2.5 Gb cards and (1) ancient Intel 1.0 Gb card still in the network as well. Also will support up to (8) VLANs, link aggregation and Spanning Tree Protocol.

Management is web based, straightforward and easy to set up or change using either the MGMT RJ45 port or web browser connected via the RJ45 or SFP+ ports. Used an SFP+ module to test all SFP+ ports. All port properly negotiate to NIC rated speeds.

Switch is quiet even though the twin fans spin at 4k+ RPM. (3) fan curve options in setup. The front and top surfaces stay between 89° to 94°F (pyrometer checked). SFP+ module tops out at 95°F on the exposed faces under load. Rated maximum power is 48.6 watts. Internal DC power supply with a 120V AC cord instead of a clumsy 4+ amp power brick.

Have a few more 10Gb cards to purchase yet. Only had it for a few weeks, but it's certainly been doing the job. About the same price as a Netgear 10 port 10Gb managed switch, 4 ports of which are only 2.5Gb. Only about $50 more than a Buffalo 8 port 10 Gb unmanaged switch.

A switch that you can grow into instead of out of for a SOHO network. It's a keeper fer shur.

[9000 Bytes] Out of the box using 10G hardware, I was getting slow speeds that were far below even 1G. After some troubleshooting, applying the latest firmware (1.1.0.20220128 for me) immediately did the trick and I now experience what is reasonable for a 10G connection.

I am a fan of QNAP products, and this has delivered the goods as well.
