Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this lens cap hard plastic or soft (e.g., rubber)

A: The cap is hard plastic not rubber. It has a little flexibility but not like rubber.

Q: 2. What is the ID for this cap? Need one for a lens hood with OD 67mm. Wonder if this one fit?

A: Yes, this will fit a lens with a diameter of 67mm.

Q: 3. Which lens cap fits AF Nikon 35 -105 mm 1:3.5 - 4.5 D?

A: The Nikon Zoom Wide Angle-Tele 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 D Auto Focus Lens will work with any lens cap that has a 52mm diameter. bit.ly/47AStgL

Q: 4. Can a filter of the same thread diameter be used with the lens hood in place?

A: Yes, you can attach the filter to the lens first and then the hood on top or attach the hood first and then screw the filter into the hood.

Q: 5. Are these made of "soft" rubber, or is there a fair amount of stiffness? Example - if I rest my camera on a flat surface, will the weight of most standard lenses collapse the bottom of the hood? Trying to get an idea for how much "flex" these rubber hoods have.

A: If resting your camera on a flat surface, the #900 Rubber Lens Hood would flex slightly.

Q: 6. I need t a new lens cap (original) for my AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm lens. Could you advise which size I should get? I can't see one specifically for that lens. Thanks

A: If you go to the BHPhoto web site and look up the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II Lens specifications::You will see that the filter mount is 72mm. This is the size of the lens cap you should buy.

Q: 7. For the 67mm model, what is the diameter of the hood when collapsed and uncollapsed, respectively?

A: The 67mm hood is 1/2 inch when collapsed, and 1 and 1/2 inches when open.

Q: 8. I am looking to purchase a 67mm lens but most of my existing filters are 77mm. If I use a 67-77 mm step up ring for filters then the canon lens hood can’t be used. Could I use this 67 mm rubber hood with the step up ring attached to the hood? If so, will there be any impact to the image?

A: You would more likely want to use a hood based on the 77mm size of the filter. That way the step up ring will not have fitting issues with the inside of the hood.

Q: 9. I have lost the lens cap for my Nikkor AF-S 18-70mm 1:3.5-4.5G ED lens. Is this the cap that I need as a replacement?

A: Yes, the Nikkor 18-70mm uses a 67mm filter thread so this lens cap will work for you.

Q: 10. Nikon 70-200 f4

A: I have the Nikon 70-200 2.8 so I'm not sure. Sorry!

[0.145 lb] I was on a short road trip and used this alone, and with the Formatt Hitech 10 stop ND filter. The results were superb in both cases - no colour cast. An added benefit of the Formatt filter is it is very thin, so vignetting is less of an issue. I would encourage people to take a filter wrench, just in case...

[0.145 lb] For those who don’t know, British company Formatt was acquired by Tokina a few years ago. Tokina also started to make their own black supermist filter. I took a gamble and bought Formatt (and a 1/16) since they’ve been making filters longer. I don’t have any Tokina’s to compare but the quality is good. The 1/8 halation is nice and contrast reduction is just right for me.. I also like the Formatt’s pouch and magnetic seal.

[Glass] Highly recommended.

I purchased a 4-stop ND filter (1.2). It never comes off my Sigma 105mm f/1.4.

Practically all my headshots and portraits (250 clients) since the purchase were taken with this filter. I can keep the shutter speed in a reasonable range with strobes (1/30 -- 1/200) without relying on high-speed sync. I can also keep the strobes at a reasonable range (1/4 -- 1/128), which wouldn't be possible without a 4-stop loss of light transmission.

Other ND filters have funky colors - maybe I was lucky but this one has not created any noticeable color shift. Thank you Formatt!!

[Glass] I've been refining my ultra slow photography techniques for about a year now and figured it was time to graduate to 'the beast' - Firecrest's Nd1600. The results are amazing with the clarity I was hoping for, minimal barreling and silky smooth threading onto my lens.

Ultra slow photography is the most technically challenging in my photo skill set (I use a Pluto Trigger to do the math for me) and having a reliable 16 stop filter to rely on helps keep me focused on the art rather than the techno details.

[Glass] Most ND filters do not block IR at the level suggested by their rating so images are overexposed if you use an LE calculator. These Firecrest ND filters are great for long exposure IR shooting with the resulting exposures very near what the calculator suggests.

[0.145 lb] I didn't see any reviews here, so I'd chime in:

I purchased this with the Sigma 105mm f/1.4, and surprised that it has no noticeably color cast (compared to some ND filters for my 85mm lens).

I'm quite satisfied. The glass is very thin and light, like 30-50% of the weight of a UV filter for the same diameter.

I use this to get wider apertures in the studio setting, given that my strobes can remain fairly strong, and the ambient lighting can either be cut at higher shutter speeds (1/200) or introduced at lower speeds (1/30-1/60). A joy to use.

[Glass] This does exactly what i wanted.. softens skin and blooms lights just the right amount. it's a very well balanced filter.

[Glass] suppose you want to shoot wide open f/ 1.4 or f/1.2.. counting down from the "sunny 16 rules" from a bright sunny day, you would need a 2-3 stop worth of ND filter for the camera to be able to shoot at that open aperature, this can do it!! The mild color cast is easily adjusted post.
