Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What is the warranty on this product?

A: On the OWC website it says 5 year warranty https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/TB38SRE144/ (B&H site says 5 years as well) Btw if this enclosure houses 8 X Seagate IronWolf Pro 18TB each BH #SEST18000NE0 then is would be more economical to but the NAS Box (BH #OWTB38SRKIT0) and the drives separately and save some $438 at current prices.

Q: 2. What is the difference between this model (JBOD) and the slightly more expensive RAID 5 Edition? I realize the Raid 5 Edition comes pre formatted as a RAID 5. But it looks like you can format the cheaper option as a RAID 5 via disk utility. Is it just the SoftRAID software that comes with the RAID 5 edition? Which leads me to my second question, do you need SoftRAID to rebuild a lost disk and run the RAID 5?

A: The only difference is the RAID software. Apple RAID cannot create a RAID 5 array, it can only create RAID 0 and RAID 1. The latest Mac OS cannot create a RAID array at all, this feature was removed from Disk Utility.

Q: 3. Are 20TB drives supported?

A: Currently (11/22), the OWC ThunderBay 8 16TB 8-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID 5 Array supports up to 18TB drives in the unit.

Q: 4. Will the CyberPower EC850LCD Ecologic Series Uninterruptible Power Supply work well with this 128TB unit?

A: Yes, the CyberPower EC850LCD would work with the OWC ThunderBay 8.

Q: 5. Can this be configured in RAID 6? Does it come with software to manage this?

A: Sorry, this unit default is RAID 0. It can handle JBOD, RAID 0, RAID 1.

Q: 6. What drives are included? Specifically, what brand drives are they?

A: This drive you mentioned "Seagate ST2000DM008" is a Barracuda retail drive which is not NAS rated. Can you please re-check what brand and what mfr. part number do these drives have. thanks

Q: 7. Does this product include OWC SoftRAID XT?

A: Yes, softraid software is included

Q: 8. at raid 5 how much usable storage is there on this 32tb model?

A: This configuration of the OWC ThunderBay 8 32TB 8-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID 5 Array has 8 drives, that each hold 4 TB. There is 28 TB capacity for storage, with 4 TB dedicated to parity, in case of drive failure.

Q: 9. Can I connect these to a Pegasus R6 (thunderbolt) mounted on a Sonnet serve solution via Thunderbolt 3 cable (using the Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter)?

A: We could not stand behind such a daisy chained and downsampled solution.

Q: 10. Do you know the read/write speeds for this in a RAID 5 configuration?

A: Sequential Read/Write (compressible data) Read: 585MB/s Write: 607MB/sSequential Read/Write (incompressible data) Read: 594MB/s Write: 548MB/s

[SD/SDHC/SDXC] This OWC Gemini 36 TB Drive Dock is the perfect solution for archiving my photos. I purchased this unit to replace an older HDD that was slowing down my workflow as it had relatively low read/write speeds.

This OWC Dock has super fast read and write speeds (more than double that of my old HDD), and was easy to set up with my Lenovo P16 laptop running Windows 11 Pro. Setup was very straightforward - i.e. once it was powered up and recognized by Windows just click on My PC in File Explorer and then click on the icon for the OWC Drive and select the OWC Setup application for a PC. Steps are similar for a Mac. Then just follow the prompts in the software to format the drives (NTFS for Windows). Note that the default setting is for RAID 0, but it can also be formatted for RAID 1, SPAN, and JBOD.

Others have commented that it is noisy, and that is true. But mine is set up in a desk enclosure that is ventilated (the unit also has an internal cooling fan) so the noise is considerably muffled.

Overall I am very happy with this purchase. So far it has performed as advertised and has fully met my expectations.

[9.28 lb] Works very well. Arrived in a triple packed and buffered box. This little 4 drive bay Array is surprisingly heavy. Has rubber feet to stand on and wont scratch the desk or wood flooring. The fan is a bit audible if this unit sits on your desk and you are used to the quiet. Overall a good choice.

[19.3 dBA] Unit works well. Needs a bit to get it working- 30 minutes on the phone but worthwhile.

[9.28 lb] Dead simple setup with my new Mac Studio. OWC's support is excellent, from the initial purchase decision to installation (and I presume support down the road). Only minor complaint is the fan noise. A lot quieter than my old Promise Pegasus raid but still noticeable.

[Aluminum] Fantastic product! Relatively quiet for what it is; goes great under my desk instead of on top of it. Ready to use right out of the box. I do wish the cord was a little longer.

BUT kind of annoying that after paying for such a great item I also have to go buy software to run an actual RAID on it. Sure people do different things on these enclosures. But tacking on another 50 or 100 bucks to the price to get it to the most common functions of the advertised process feels cheap or better nickel-and-dimed.

[SD/SDHC/SDXC] I bought it to replace an 18TB WD data drive. Using on with a MacBook Pro M1 Max. I bought it bare bones and added 2 Seagate Ironhorse Pro 16TB drives. I configured it as RAID 0 (for speed and capacity).

First, areas for improvement (and thankfully, not many!
- It's a bit chirpy. Definitely could improve the sound dampening. Not totally obnoxious but works best if you can locate it with a bit of distance from you. Could be an issue with serious audio editors

Now, the good:
- Easy to install drives and configure. As I mentioned above, I configured it RAID 0 (16TB x 2). And yes, I run frequent backups. I do a lot of video editing so I wanted the speed and capacity.

- It's fast. I connect via Thunderbolt 3; getting about 511 MBPS on Blackmagic Disk Speed Test.

- Great capacity; can be configured currently up to 20TB x 2 (40TB capacity!)

- Ports. Always nice to have expansion ports built in. I probably won't be using them too much because I'm also using a CalDigit dock. But I could see this being your main dock if the ports satisfy your needs.

- Egonomics and looks are great. Fairly small footprint and looks great on the desk.

I could see the Gemini being useful for a lot of situations where you want a lot of storage in a DAS. NAS's are great but they do have a level of overhead to manage and there are always the speed issues. I'm probably going to get another one to replace a Drobo - which is currently my main storage bucket for my Plex server (on a Windows box.) Drobo was great in their day. But...
