The Apricorn 500GB Aegis NVX USB 3.2 Portable Hard Drivefrom Apricorn 500GB Aegis NVX USB 3.2 Portable Hard Driveincorporates upper-level security features to deliver 256-bit AES XTS hardware protection, as well as an onboard keypad with PIN authentication to securely protect your data. The keypad operates independently of your host system, meaning that it circumvents hardware and software key logging attempts to capture passwords. The keypad is polymer-coated and wear-resistant, which prevents the drive's most commonly buttons from being revealed. Built with both Admin and User modes, admins will be able to control the universal programmable settings of the drive, while users will only have access to the basic drive functions. Other integrated features include a Brute Force Defense, which protects against brute force attacks, an unattended auto lock, a self-destruct PIN, LEDs to confirm successful button presses, and IP68 certification that protects against dust and water.

Built using a durable aluminum alloy housing, the Aegis NVX delivers read and write speeds of up to 1000 MB/s and connects to your host system using an integrated USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 cable that also provides bus power. Shock- and vibration-resistant, the Aegis NVX is compatible with Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and Symbian systems, as well as other operating systems with a storage file system that's powered by USB.

The heart and soul of every Apricorn Secure Device, AegisWare is patent-protected firmware combined with an advanced feature set.

This tough enclosure is milled from a solid block of aluminum alloy and sealed closed with tamper-resistant/evident uni-directional breakaway security fasteners that are driven and cemented in place with hardened epoxy.

This drive is unlocked by entering a PIN on the keypad and not the host computer's keyboard. Until the device is unlocked via its keypad, it remains invisible to the host. The embedded keypad circumvents all hardware and software key logging attempts to capture passwords by excluding the host system from the authentication process. The polymer-coated membrane-style keypad is wear-resistant to prevent revealing the drive's most commonly used buttons.

The Aegis NVX supports one independent Admin and four additional User PINs. The Admin mode controls the universal programmable settings of the device and can only be accessed with the Admin PIN. The User mode is limited to basic external drive functions like read/write, unlock/lock, etc. The data on the drive can also be accessed with the admin PIN in the User mode.

Beyond the admin, one additional user PIN can be generated to access the device's data. This PIN can be set up by the admin at initial configuration, or the device can be deployed in a state of User Forced Enrollment, where the intended user must first establish his or her own PIN prior to using the device.

Creates state of user forced enrollment that restores access to drive. In the event that a user PIN is forgotten, recovery PINs can be programmed by the admin into the device at time of setup (and any time thereafter) to permit access to the drive's data by creating a new state of User Forced Enrollment leaving the Admin PIN and the drive's data intact. Once a replacement User PIN is generated, access to the drive is restored for the user and that new User PIN serves to replace the previous forgotten one.

All access settings are controlled by Admin and User modes employed in situations that require the drive's contents to be kept intact and unaltered for later examination. The two Read-Only modes are as follows: Universal Read Only is set by the admin from within the admin mode and can't be modified or disabled by anyone but the admin. The second read-only mode can be set and disabled by a user but can also be enabled or disabled by the admin as well.

Admin designates minimum and maximum PIN lengths (between 7 and 16 Characters). The longer the PIN, the more secure the data on the device becomes. For example, the odds of brute force success go from 1 in 10,000,000 with a 7-digit PIN to 1 in 100,000,000 with an 8-digit PIN. In cases where the User sets up his or her own PIN from User Forced Enrollment, the Admin can set an enhanced User password length requirement as part of the overall security policy.

Programmable length of time of inactivity permitted before drive locks itself. All Aegis Secure Drives will automatically lock once disconnected from a computer's USB port or the power to that USB port is interrupted, or after a pre-programmed period of inactivity.

You can select the number of consecutive invalid PIN attempts permitted (4-20) before crypto-erase. The drive is unlocked (authenticated) by entering a PIN on their own onboard keypad. Since the PIN is not entered using the host computer's keyboard, they are not vulnerable to software- or hardware-based key-loggers or software-based brute-force attacks. However, if the device comes under a physical brute-force attack, your data is protected with a programmable "Brute Force Hack Defense Mechanism" which, if the programmed number (between 4 and 20) of consecutive incorrect password entries has been attempted, the device will delete its own encryption key and destroy the ability to decrypt its stored data.

Allows drive to remain unlocked during USB port re-enumeration (virtual machine, remote boot). Designated for specific cases in which the drive needs to remain unlocked through USB port re-enumeration such as during reboot or passing through a virtual machine.

All Apricorn devices can be reset and redeployed over and over. Drive reset clears both the User and Admin PINs, destroys the data, creates a new randomly generated encryption key, and allows the drive to be reused repeatedly, with an infinite number of randomly generated encryption keys, allowing the admin and or user to reset the drive as often as is needed.

When programmed and activated, this performs a crypto-erase and becomes a new access PIN. It's the last line of defense for data security when the device's physical security is at risk. The Self-Destruct PIN defends against these physically compromising situations by erasing the drive's contents, leaving it in normal working order appearing yet to be deployed.

Visually confirms successful button presses via the device's LEDs.

The dust- and water-resistant durable aluminum alloy housing and membrane keypad protecting data go well beyond encryption. Tough enough to go anywhere, the Aegis NVX's resilient design makes it perfect for travel and field applications.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Hi. I only have Snow Leopard, not Lion or Mountain Lion. Will this work?

A: Yes. It is platform specific, not OS specific. As long as you have a USB port you're good to go.

Q: 2. What is the RPM of the enclosed SATA HD ?? (7200RM P?)

A: 5400 rpm

Q: 3. Will this work with Windows 10?

A: I don't know I use Apple products.

Q: 4. Can this be recharged from a portable power device (like an Anker Astro, etc.)?

A: Not familiar with the Astro, but you can recharge it from any power source that would recharge your phone, tablet, etc.

Q: 5. Is this drive Solid State? Does it get hot?

A: It is not solid state - those are still too rich for my blood!. File retrieval/transfer rate is pretty fast, and yes, it does get warm.

Q: 6. Are you able to plug in a SD card reader into the USB 3 port and then directly transfer to another SD card from the SD card slot in the device? Essentially using the device as the interface to back up to another SD card?

A: I have the drive, and don't think this is possible / practical. It is designed to be a storage device that then connects to a computer. I have not tried to write to a SD card, just read from it. The 3.0 port is just for a computer. It is fantastic for this.

Q: 7. Is that an HDD with flash memory?

A: This is a hard disk drive. It does not have any flash memory.

Q: 8. Can this drive be formatted as 'HFS+' to use on an iMac?

A: Yes, this drive should be able to be formatted in disc utility on your Mac computer

Q: 9. What is the drive speed and/or transfer rate of this drive?

A: I don't have a way to measure writes and reads, but it is the fastest USB 3.0 I own; by far.

Q: 10. I am looking to purchase this for backing up my iPad. Is this a good choice?

A: I bought one to backup my film (documentary) and am really surprised by how much room is on it. The fact that it's made for an apple product is a bonus! Strongly recommend it!

[Bus Powered] This encrypted flash drive allows you to create a password (7 - 16 digits) that needs to be entered to access it's contents. No device will recognize this flash drive unless the password is entered first.

Though there is a simple set of instructions included on how to set Admin and User passwords, I found them a little difficult to follow. The manufacturer, Apricorn, has a YouTube channel. I recommend beginning with the video: Aegis Secure Key 3.0 Tutorial 1: GETTING STARTED. Apricorn's YouTube channel also has easy to follow instructions on how to use the advanced security features of this drive. Once the drive is set up and you are able to open it, the Aegis Secure Key has a user manual in several different languages loaded on it.

The Aegis Secure Key drive has a metal body and an internal rechargeable battery. It comes formatted for use on PCs and Android smart televisions. It comes with a thick rubber case that the drive slides into.

I've only had mine for a two weeks. But haven't encountered any problems with it. I recommend the Apricorn Aegis Secure Key.

[Aluminum] I bought a pair of these to use as a password/credentials store, with one acting as a backup. This way I can keep my credentials for banking and so forth off my computer except when they are needed. Very happy with the ease of use. Nice product. Build quality seems to be fine.
