Sunwayfoto Macro Focusing Rail Lever-lock Clamp

Sunwayfoto Macro Focusing Rail Lever-lock Clamp

$299.85 $365.82

The Sunwayfoto Macro Focusing Rail Lever-Lock Clampgives you the ability to precisely adjust your camera distance when shooting macro photography. The clamp at the top is Arca-type compatible and locks down with a lever-lock clamp. The focusing rail itself has a double-dovetail mount and will fit most Arca-type clamps on the market.

The Macro Focusing rail has both a ratchet handle, for fast and quick adjustments, and a thumb-screw knob along with engraved index marks on the side of the rail for fine adjustments. The CNC machined T6061 aluminum rail holds a maximum weight capacity of 15.4 lb, but may hold less weight once the angle of the rail is changed.

The Type III black anodized aluminum is scuff and scratch resistant, and the finish is also resistant against corrosion. In addition, two focusing rails can be stacked for dual axis adjustments (forward and back and lateral). Located on the bottom of the plate are two safety stop screws to prevent any accidental pulling or falling out of the rail when a clamp is partially open.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How much weight will it support in a vertical movement and /or how well does it lock in place so gravity does not pull it down?

A: my camera canon 6d and my canon mpe65 macro lens weighs about 5# I have had no problem with movement at all it don't even creep when hung vertical I love it

Q: 2. Does it perform well with focus stacking?

A: Yes, this will work well for stacking and is a good alternative to the more expensive models.

Q: 3. How is this rail for focus stacking?

A: You set a manual focus and then take multiple pictures, each time turning the slider a few millimeters forward between pictures. This gives you a series of pictures each focused on a different plane. The rail ensures the series of frames has minimal differences in framing so all the pics line up. You then use stacking software e.g. Helicon or photoshop to stack the pics combining each in-focus plane creating one picture with increased depth of field. The rail works reasonably well for the price btw. There is some movement but for beginners in macro it works well.

Q: 4. Can I mount this on my Manfrotto XPro 3-way head?

A: Since this rail has a 1/4-20 thread at the bottom, you can attach it to a head like a Manfrotto XPro 3 way head.

Q: 5. I have macro lenses that have a collar and the plate is oriented perpendicular to the body plate. Is there a way to orient the sled to work with that lens plate?

A: If you attach an arca clamp with built in plate, it will work. Click the link to view; https://bhpho.to/3gpEy3a

Q: 6. Is the maximum load really 1.6 pounds as stated in the manual? That would be only for compact cameras, wouldn't it?

A: This is an error; there isn't really any maximum load capacity on this macro rail. The manuals are reprinted and our website will be updated shortly.

Q: 7. Does this come with an Oben (or Arca) quick release plate?

A: It is an Arca type plate made by Oben.

Q: 8. Does this work with the Peak Design plate attached to the camera?

A: Yes, the Peak Design PL-S-3 Standard Plate and the Peak Design Dual Plate v2 for Capture Camera Clip should be compatible for use on the Sunwayfoto Macro Focusing Rail with Screw-Knob Clamp.

Q: 9. Has the screw knob for the "arca clamp" had its stem shortened? From your product images it appears so.

A: The knob on the clamps for Sunwayfoto Macro Focusing Rail with Screw-Knob Clamp is 26mm long. It looks like the image was taking on an angle which change the perspective of the knob.

Q: 10. Could this rail be used with a bmpcc 4k, a tilta cage, and a v-mount battery and plate? I want to try taking videos using a 5:1 micro lens and I just wanted to know if I could use this rail system with my camera setup? If this rail wouldn't work for me, what rail would I need?

A: It would support that setup, but I'd recommend only using the BMPCC4K + cage, and positioning your v-mount battery and plate off rig, maybe rigging them up to the tripod rather than to the cage. If you need more strength, consider stacking two Manfrotto micrometric focusing rails instead: https://bhpho.to/3zwYevt

[0.885 lb] Build quality is spot on. The rail is a real bargain for its price.

[0.885 lb] This rail is just what I needed and expected for the money. There are more sophisticated and expensive alternatives, but the price point and features are what I expect from Sunwayfoto, a good value that works great for the average user, like me.

The construction is solid and it works well. I have two small nits: 1) The knob on the left for locking the position protrudes a bit far. You can see the threads exposed. I wonder if I'll damage it accidentally at some point. (I'm clumsy enough...) 2) Where the top plate is shown in my photo, it's as far back as it will go before it hits the removable crank knob shown. At least you can remove that; it covers a knurled knob like the top-plate knob.

[Aluminum] I bought 2 of these and arranged them so we an precisely adjust camera position when shooting macros of small medical instruments in the studio. They are incredibly well built and very reasonably priced. We have lots of Foba and Arca Swiss accessories and these are every bit just as good for 1/5th the price. I highly recommend Sunwayphoto products.

[0.885 lb] Very happy with this rail. Have gotten photos in the wild that otherwise I would not have gotten. The flower pic is focus stacked. For stacking I take off the 'extra' handle for spinning. For getting spider or bug that is moving use the extra handle to quickly get subject in focus and fire away. The spinning handle is easily removed which I consider a feature and not a bug. I've mounded my rail on a panning clamp so I can make quick sideways moves with out moving my tripod.

[Aluminum] This is a great macro rail for the price. It's got a very simple mechanism with no real play in the tolerances between the moving parts that results in smooth camera movement.

The rail is very light and has a low profile so it doesn't take up much room at all. There's nothing I can really fault with the design.

While it's obvious that the handle introduces a fair amount of wobble due to the off-centre rotation, the wobble is largely from the tripod and head and is only noticeable if you were to try and move the rail from one end to the other quite fast. For focus stacking, this shouldn't be an issue and if so you can always use the thumb screw on the other end.

[Aluminum] I'm very pleased with this purchase. The unit is extremely well constructed. I use it with a Canon 1DS Mark II (heavy) with the Canon 65mm M-PE Macro (heavy) and it rides smoothly throughout the image stacking process. I couldn't be more pleased.

[Aluminum] Well made without the huge expense of other brands.

[Aluminum] I really like the macro focusing rail. It gives me enough travel to move in close to an object without having to move the tripod. Having it slip in and out in an Arca clamp extends that travel.

The unit is well made. However, I do wish they had added at set screw to the ratchet handle. I'm afraid I'm going to loose it.

[0.885 lb] I've got other Macro rails, bulky. This one is svelte with a precise screw, sensitive approach, and intuitive touch. These things are important as close up to macro shooting is a whole different approach with peculiarities that can get distracting. The SunWay rail is the most intuitive approach I've found and made like it should be twice the price. What a Deal!
