Limited to 1000 units worldwide, this Leica SL2 boasts a silver anodized top plate and base plate, providing a striking contrast to the elegant black leather covering reminiscent of the Leica M11. The distinct, minimalist design highlights Leica's commitment to functional elegance and haptic value, resulting in a camera that is as visually stunning as the images it captures.

Not only does this new variant embody the unmistakable Leica design language, but it perfectly marries the past with the present by incorporating the technical specifications of the modern SL2 series. While celebrating the brand's historic roots, the silver Leica SL2 doesn't compromise on features or performance, bringing you the best of both worlds.

For accelerated autofocus performance, a Leica Object Detection AF system quickly calculates the distance to subjects and adjusts the focusing position with sensor and lens communication occurring at rates up to 480 fps. This contrast-detection type focus method benefits both still and video recording modes, as well as subject tracking applications through the use of a Body Detection mode. It also features 225 selectable AF areas, which provide excellent control over where the camera will focus.

Featuring a full-frame 47.3MP CMOS sensor and Maestro III image processor, the SL2's imaging capabilities have been optimized for high-resolution recording along with notable sensitivity, a wide 14-stop dynamic range, and flexible recording modes. The sensor's design omits a low-pass filter in order to maintain the highest degree of sharpness and resolution. When paired with the Maestro processor, noise levels are further suppressed throughout the sensitivity range, from ISO 50-50000, and processing capabilities further yield fast full-resolution continuous shooting speeds up to 20 fps with an electronic shutter, 10 fps with a mechanical shutter, and 6 fps with a mechanical shutter and AF-C, for up to 78 consecutive DNG files.

Beyond stills shooting, the SL2 is a capable video camera featuring up to 5K (4992 x 3744) recording with 10-bit color, as well as DCI, UHD 4K, and Full HD settings. Also, high-speed recording modes for UHD 4K60, with 30 fps playback, and Full HD 180 fps, with 30 fps playback, offer 2x and 6x slower motion, respectively.

Complementing the video quality, a dedicated Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) Photo Style mode and L-Log gamma profile can be used to expand highlight and shadow details and offer greater flexibility when color grading. Additionally, recording to an optional external recorder is possible, via the HDMI Type A port, and support for an external microphone and headphones are also available via dedicated 3.5mm jacks.

Helping to achieve the utmost sharpness when photographing handheld, 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization compensates for a broad range of movement types to render sharper, clearer imagery.

Using sensor-shift stabilization technology, the SL2 also features a Multishot mode to capture and compile eight separate exposures to create a single 187MP raw or JPEG file. Suitable for static subjects and when working on a tripod, this mode creates a more highly detailed and color accurate image than a single shot alone can produce and produces an image with a 16736 x 11168-pixel resolution.

  • Used in conjunction with other members of the L-Mount Alliance, the L lens mount is a versatile interface with a mount diameter of 51.6mm and a flange distance of 20mm for working with a broad range of optics.

  • An impressive EyeRes EVF is a high-resolution 5.76m-dot OLED finder offering a clear 0.78x configurable viewing magnification along with a smooth 120 fps refresh rate, 0.005 sec lag, and 10,000:1 contrast ratio.

  • Large 3.2" 2.1m-dot touchscreen LCD is a bright, clear means for live view shooting as well as playback and menu navigation. This screen also uses Gorilla Glass for a highly durable design.

  • In addition to the rear LCD, a 1.28" top status LCD can also be used for quickly reviewing shooting settings, even when the camera is powered off.

  • Durable, weather-sealed magnesium-alloy construction is splash, dust, and freezeproof to accommodate working in harsh weather conditions and trying environments.

  • Dual UHS-II-compatible SD memory card slots offer flexible image storage, allowing you to segregate raw and JPEG files to different cards, save duplicate files to both cards, or simply double your storage space with overflow recording.

  • A USB Type-C port allows for fast file transferring as well as high-speed in-camera battery charging. Additionally, an HDMI Type A port benefits video applications, and 3.5mm microphone and headphone jacks suit advanced audio recording needs.

  • BP-SCL4 rechargeable lithium-ion battery is rated for approximately 370 shots per charge when working with the rear monitor.

  • Built-in Wi-Fi, when used in conjunction with the Leica FOTOS app for iOS and Android, permits sharing imagery directly to a linked mobile device and also enables remote control over the Q2 and remote shooting via a live view image. Additionally, Bluetooth LE helps to maintain a permanent connection between the mobile device and the camera, enabling remote waking of the camera and automatic connection anytime within range.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can you make in-camera double exposures?

A: I'm sorry, no, the SL2 does not do in camera multiple exposures.

Q: 2. Does the Leica SL2 have a built in HDR processor?

A: Unfortunately, this camera does not have a built in HDR processor. You would have to take the images and combine them in post yourself or look into the SL2-S if you're looking for a Leica that can do HDR.

Q: 3. Does the SL2 have in body sensor cleaning?

A: The SL2 does not have an in-body sensor cleaning mode. It is highly suggested to get some tools to help your sensor stay clean like this. https://bhpho.to/3BRubj6

Q: 4. The maximum synch speed is slated at 250th... Will the high speed function on my Broncolor Siros still do its thing?

A: The Siros 800 L features Broncolor HS for syncing at shutter speeds up to 1/8000s. Broncolor HS requires an RFS2.2 transmitter, available for Canon, Nikon, and Sony cameras. There isn't a Leica transmitter for the broncolor and therefore HSS will not work. It has to be TTL and wireless for HSS to work.

Q: 5. Does anyone know if the multishot mode works when tethered with CaptureOne? And can you use studio strobes with the multishot mode?

A: Yes, Multishot mode is available on Leica SL2 Mirrorless Camera when tether to Capture One. Unfortunately the strobes won't get trigger.

Q: 6. I have an SL Typ 691. Looking for a new tripod. What is the correct screw head size for a tripod that will accept my SL?

A: The Leica SL Type 601 (and most other cameras, including the Leica SL2) uses the 1/4"-20 mounting thread. Any tripod would work, but in the interest of getting you a great tripod that might support some of the larger Leica L-mount lenses, some good recommendations are the Gitzo traveler or RRS Ascend. https://bhpho.to/3yc8YhK https://bhpho.to/3ymjHGq

Q: 7. problems with moire?

A: Leica SL2 Mirrorless Camera with 24-70mm f/2.8 Lens will show some moiré for example a shirt checkered pattern may show some moiré in the photo.

Q: 8. When shot in APS-C (with T lens for instance) how many megapixels will the resulting image be?

A: When shooting with APS-C lenses or shooting in APS-C Crop Mode, the largest image resolution size would be 20.2 megapixels (5504 x 3664 pixels).

Q: 9. Is there a way to add GPS functionality to the SL2?

A: You can use the Leica Fotos app on a smartphone and using the location data of the smartphone it can update the photo in the camera with the GPS info. This has been working with previous Leica cameras like the Q2. This should also work with the Leica SL2 as it is also compatible with the Leica Fotos app, even though that specific functionality I do not see listed in the app yet for the SL2. That might just be because the SL2 is new and not released yet, so the app should be updated soon. I also see that a new Leica Fotos 2.0 app is being released on November 21st, so it should have more functionality for the SL2.

Q: 10. Will there be a new HG SL4 SL to go with it or will the original be the only grip to work with the new SL2 system?

A: There is a new Multi Function Handgrip HGP-SLC6 for the SL2 B&H # LEHGSCL6, Leica # 16061.

[1x Hot Shoe ] I own the original SL (601) for 5 years.this is what I was waiting for.I didn’t need the high resolution of sl2 as I don’t crop my photos and I didn’t need the high file size.also the low light picture taking was not good with the sl2.too much noise above iso 800.A lot of people think the higher pixel count better image quality and that is not true.I shoot only with Leica M lenses.love this camera SL2-S.great upgrade from the SL 601.

[L-Mount] I love how this camera is made . Super solid and I don't have to worry about it getting water and dust in it . Not the best autofocus but it's manageable as long as you know your workarounds .

The 4K video is amazing !! Plus the HD 180 FPS is a nice feature to have . Oh and did I mention about being able to hook this up with a V-Mount battery via usb -C to Dtap cable ? That and the Atomos ninja v make it a nice compact run and gun filmmaking kit .

The Leica look is an obsession that a lot of Leica owners would admit to as a reason for purchasing this tool . Despite some of it's minor short comings , it's an amazing step forward in my career being able to provide images from this camera .

Thank you B&H for shipping this out to me in a timely manner ! You guys are the best !

[Stereo ] Rather than a myriad of buttons, dials, and gizmos -- Leica builds a UI (User Interface) designed for photographers, not computer geeks.
Stills settings are separate from Video settings and all are logically presented for instant access.
Most importantly for me, the old fashioned stills photographer, the image's RAW files (DNG like Adobe) have amazing depth in both shows and highlights yet are adaptable to the creator's wishes.

[5,760,000 Dot] I have not had my camera that long but the Leica SL2S with the Vario-Elmarit 24-70mm lens is everything I expected it to be. The colors spectacular and the build quality is outstanding. Simply put, when I bought my first Leica X I knew I would never pick up another camera without the Leica badge. Now that this is my second Leica I have been reassured that Leica's are in a class all by themselves. I am very happy with my purchase.

[Stereo ] Comparing this camera to the SL2 is more apples and oranges than I would have thought. The SL2-S is great in low light, and has somewhat faster autofocus. While both cameras produce gorgeous images, there are differences in what comes directly out of the camera. They are not huge differences and can be easily corrected afterwards. The best review of this camera I have seen, and one that explores the differences between the SL2-S and the SL2 is the review from Steve Huff (one of the reviews on this site). I think that he provides an accurate assessment.

I am still getting used to both cameras but I really enjoy the feel of the SL series camera body and the ease of use of the controls. While I bought the SL2 before the SL2-S came out, I can see that there are enough differences between the two that I am quite happy to have both. I think the SL2 excels in landscape, architecture, and in anything where I need to crop and can thus benefit from the larger file size.

The SL2-S would be my choice for general purpose travel, evening and night photography (particularly street scenes), and most action-related stuff such as my dogs. Admittedly, neither camera has the incredible autofocus capability of recent higher end Sony or Canon cameras but both the SL2 and SL2-S are capable with the edge going to the SL2-S.

[TTL] I hesitated a bit because of the lower resolution (compared to the SL2). However, the BSI sensor is amazing and great for low light. High sensitivity and high shutter speed is exactly what I was looking for. From a purely aesthetic point of view, this camera is beautiful and extremely well designed. It's just a completely different level. Highly recommeded.

[DNG, JPEG] I switched from TL2 to SL2-S and have no regrets. Its simplicity, ease of use is excellent, and the image quality is fantastic (colours, skin tone, sharpness, etc.).

A lot of people knock the autofocus, but I'm 99% happy with it for stills, and manual focus is the way to go for video anyway.

I tried the Sigma 28-70, which is a super lens by default, but the Leica version is better. Not just because of the build quality, but also the image quality. Yes, the 24-90 is a hair better and noticeably heavier (I tried that too), I think the kit lens is somewhere between the Sigma 24-70 and the Leica 24-90.

I give it 5 stars, but if it was a little lighter I would give it 6. :) After a full day of shooting, you can feel the weight, but it's lightened if you buy a good neck strap.

[100%] Was looking for a hybrid that has the Leica look and this camera is worth it. Auto focus is just whatever for video but I personally manual focus anyway. Leica LUTs for Log look sublime. Sensor works well in tough lighting conditions.
