Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What's the transfer speed of the SD card slots?

A: The speed would be determined by the type of card inserted.

Q: 2. Will this work with M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs that have a heat sink?

A: Yes, the HYPER HyperDrive USB4 NVMe SSD Enclosure can fit an SSD with a heatsink.

Q: 3. Is this backward compatible? If I use a USB A adapter can I transfer data to an older computer? Albeit at slower speeds

A: Yes, using a USB adapter will work with the HYPER HyperDrive USB4 NVMe SSD Enclosure.

Q: 4. Can this enclosure fit the WD_BLACK 4TB SN850X NVMe with it's heatsink attached?

A: The Satechi USB4 NVMe SSD Pro Enclosure, B&H # SASTEU4NPM, is not compatible with solid-state drives that are double-sided or have a heatsink attached.

Q: 5. Does this enclosure allow TRIM Support on MacOS? I know thunderbolt does, but unclear on USB4. Please, Mac specific.

A: TRIM is supported on macOS for NVME SSD drives. The HYPER HyperDrive USB4 NVMe SSD Enclosure, B&H # HYHDU4NSENC, only works with NVMe SSD drives, so it should support TRIM on macOS, but this is not something Hyper shares in their documentation. When it comes to SATA drives, TRIM is not supported on macOS, regardless of whether the enclosure is USB, Thunderbolt, or USB4.

Q: 6. Will this be fully compatible with SK Hynix P41 or Samsung Pro 990?

A: Yes, the HYPER HyperDrive USB4 NVMe SSD Enclosure is compatible with M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs like the Samsung 990 Pro and the SK Hynix P41.

Q: 7. Is this bootable, can it be used for system drive?

A: You can use this for a OS drive.

Q: 8. Is this enclosure backward compatible with TB3/TB4?

A: Yes, the HYPER HyperDrive USB4 NVMe SSD Enclosure will work with a Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4 port.

Q: 9. Will this work with PCIE 4x4 NVME SSDs at their max speed (e.g Silicon Power 4TB US75 PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 Internal SSD)?

A: NVMe SSDs used in the Satechi USB4 NVMe SSD Pro Enclosure only have the potential to go up to the max speed that this enclosure can support, which is 3840 MB/s.

Q: 10. What blade SSD's will be supported? Is soft raid included?

A: M.2 - 2280 "M Key" SSD's. I do not know of any models that do not work. Softraid XT is included.

[Aluminum] Well, this device is truly versatile and quite fast too. The controller that Hyper have used in this enclosure is just the fantastic, which makes the whole thing that much nicer to use.

It's quite a large chunk of aluminium, but that acts like a great heat sink for the inevitable heat produced by the nvme ssd. It's elegantly designed, and tool-less too!

I'm using it on an M1 Pro MacBook Pro with a 4TB Samsung 990 Pro SSD. Works perfectly with MacOS. Once it mounts on the desktop, it's good to go. Unlike the device it replaces, the OWC Thunderbolt 3 Envoy Express, which took around 20seconds until it would find its feet. A notable upgrade in speed too! From the Envoy's 1400 MB/sec write to just above 3100MB/sec write of the Hyper.

With a USB4/TB4 cable, speeds are around 3100 MB/sec read and write.
With a USB 4 cable that supports 20Gb/s, speeds are around 1900 MB/sec read and write.
With USB 3.2 cable supporting 10Gb/s, like the one supplied with my Samsung T7, speeds are around 900MB/sec.

It's not going to saturate the bandwidth of top NVME drives today, but I think 3100 MB/sec is plenty speedy. I got the 990 Pro at a large discount.

It's fantastic that this Hyper enclosure is backwards compatible with USB and Thunderbolt. I'm not limited anymore by port type, and can just plug and play into any of my Macs, whether it's TB3, USB 3, TB4, USB 4, etc. It works perfectly fine with my oldest Mac, a 2012 Macbook Pro!

The only downside of this device is it's a bit large and weighty. At 318g with drive, cable and silicone case, its over 3x heavier than the Envoy it replaced. For me thats no issue, but it's something to keep in mind.

I'll likely order another one at some point. It's probably one of the best storage accessories I've bought in a very long time. It's so much better than the Envoy Express I have. I highly recommend it!

[Aluminum] After researching several external drive cases, I purchased the Hyperdrive case to house a 1 GB NVME drive that had been removed from a laptop pursuant to warranty replacement service. The written and video instructions were helpful and installing the drive into the case was simple and only took about five minutes. The quality of the materials and design were exceptional; and the USB-C cable provided was an added plus. Accessing the external drive via connection to a laptop is now easy and the performance is very fast and issue free. When in use, the Hyperdrive case does get warm; however I set the Hyperdrive case on an external electronics cooling fan (designed for stereo a/v components), which keeps it cool. I'm very impressed with the workmanship, performance and quality of the Hyperdrive; and I highly recommend this product for anyone looking for an external drive case.

[Aluminum] I have tried several brands of USB/Thunderbolt NVMe enclosures but have never found them to be high quality products, until I found the HyperDrive Next USB4 enclosure.

This enclosure is extremely well engineered, and honestly is higher quality than most turn key external drives you can buy off the shelf. I really like the all metal enclosure to help dissipate heat as well as the rubber shell to help protect the enclosure. The activity light on the top center is also a really nice touch.

Performance wise, this one is the best I’ve used. With a Samsung 990 Pro 4TB drive, I’m exceeding 3GB/s (bytes, not bits) for both read and write speeds.

I am extremely happy with this purchase and would recommend it to anyone looking for a DIY USB NVMe enclosure.
