The SYMPLY SymplyDIT XTH LTO-9 Tape Drive Thunderbolt 3 SFF-8644from SYMPLY SymplyDIT XTH LTO-9 Tape Drive Thunderbolt 3 SFF-8644is a unique full-featured backup, archive, and transfer system designed for on-set and DIT data protection use with features that can enhance production and post-production pipelines. It features an LTO-9 half-height tape drive and dual 2.5" SSD bays connected via a 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt 3 or 6 Gb/s SFF-8644 port as a convenient connection to your desktop Windows, Mac, or Linux system. It also features a second Thunderbolt 3 port for daisy-chaining and device charging and a second SFF-8644 SAS expansion port for connecting other SAS devices to your Thunderbolt system, or use it with a non-Thunderbolt system. It is also possible to expand the SymplyDIT XTH with a second LTO tape drive.

LTO-9 media supports a native storage capacity of up to 18TB and data transfers of up to 300 MB/s, or, when using 2.5:1 compression, a storage capacity of up to 45TB and data transfers of up to 500 MB/s. This drive is backward compatible with LTO-8 media which supports a native storage capacity of up to 12TB and a compressed capacity of 30TB and LTO-7 media, which supports a native storage capacity of up to 6TB and a compressed capacity of up to 15TB.

The SymplyPRO DIT Thunderbolt is based on SYMPLY's advanced desktop SymplyPRO product line featuring a rugged metal alloy enclosure, premium power supply, and cooling. Then, SYMPLY added multi-access technology that combines docking support for most 2.5" SSDs or Atomos Master Caddies for fast all-in-one DIT operations. Comprising a space-effective single desktop design, this unit is highly serviceable and upgradeable.

Each SymplyDIT LTO system includes two Thunderbolt 3 ports for daisy chaining and fast device charging. [LED Indicator] I use this to archvie 4K digital cinema data, using a tape library to back up a RAID. The tapes are expensive and the process is slow and cumbersome, but it is probably the most stable format for archiving digital data. If you are developing a new system, you'll probably want LTO-6, but if you're already on LTO-5, this product is just fine. Keep in mind that eventually you will need custom labels, so buy a bunch of them in advance. 5

[2x 2.5"] We purchased one of these units back in January, 2020 for use in a University audio/video recording setting. I believe we've already transferred over 150TB. There is a lot of relief when you know your master recordings are now backed up on something that lasts longer, is faster, closer and easier to deal with than stumbling and slow 'Cloud solutions' or having to shelve dozens of aging drives! We use YoYotta software with it. So far it has worked really well. The only issues we have had are with a LTO cart or two that had a problem and failed during the transfer process, not after. It is pretty darn fast and easy to hook up using thunderbolt. The Software is also great for adding metadata and sending emails to let you know it is finished once verified checks of the transferred data are complete. Because of 4K, file sizes are soaring ever higher, yet the mLogic LTO 8 is pretty darn fast and so good at 'retrieving' past recordings, I plan on buying one for my own personal use. As always, your mileage may vary. 5

[2x 2.5"] Hooked it up to an Intel Mac Mini and was pleasantly surprised at how quiet it is compared to our old LTO-5. The Mac Mini has 10GbE and the two LTFS tapes I've created so far from our NAS have been very fast. One was created with the included mLogic app (the name escapes me at the moment) and the other with MyLTO. 5

[100,000] I've purchased dozens of these and haven't had any issues to date. Works as expected & reliable. I'm using a mLogic mTape LTO-7 drive. The only minor quibble I have is that they don't come with any sort of label/sticker. 5
