Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. does hdmi support 10bit 2560*1440 display?

A: Yes

Q: 2. Any real downsides to running the drive as JOBD, using software like carbon copy to use the second drive as a clone and backup daily? In JOBD, does my computer recognize two drives on the desktop? Im kinda paranoid running RAID 1 because if the RAID controller gets damaged or something, itll cost thousands to recover my data. I know its unlikely, but this company doesnt offer data recovery with their warranty, theyll just give you a new unit. If I run JOBD, I ASSUME I could swap one of the drives into a standard controller/housing and recover my data?

A: I assume you could do as you say, running it as JBOD and using CCC to back-up but you face the issue of having only a single copy of the data for up to a day (until your scheduled back-up runs).Running RAID 1 gives you 'immediate' mirroring to protect your data against a hard disk failure. What is more likely to fail? The hard disk or the RAID controller? If you want to do JBOD, you are paying a lot of extra money for this unit and wouldn't be getting maximum value out of it. I ran it as RAID 1, so i took advantage of what the drive offers, and used CCC to back that up to another single hard drive for 'backup'.

Q: 3. Can I configure the unit so that one drive becomes a mirror of the other? I want to back-up photos on one 4 TB drive and, at the same time, back them up on the other.

A: The answer is yes and the instructions to do that are on G-Tech site. No need to download any utility. Since I cannot post a link here you should go to their support section and enter answer.aspx?ID=14045 in their search field. There you will see step-by-step how to use Disk Utility to Create a RAID 1 (Mirrored) Array

Q: 4. Can this hard disk be used as raid 1 in windows 7?

A: This device is meant to be used on Windows 8.1 or later.

Q: 5. What is the read and write speed in JBOD?

A: For this modern 7200 RPM drive it ranges from about 80-160 MB/s.

Q: 6. If using this item on iMac, can the USB C port be used to power a MacBook Pro USB C?

A: It depends on power requirements. Did NOT work for the new MacBook Pro 16”. I tried this with a thunderbolt 3 cable...no go. I’d call tech support...in India...if that’s a deal breaker for you. I’ve heard the new Promise drives can power a more powerful monitor as they were made for the new Mac Pro.

Q: 7. I'm running OS 10.13. Is it simple to reformat these disks as JOBD? Is this the best tool for the job if I don't want a RAID? I'm just looking for a single enclosure for two fast drives.

A: Yes, I would recommend a program called "softraid" for this. This item supports the following formats RAID 0, 1, JBOD.

Q: 8. Can multiple computers be connected and using at the same time?

A: This drive can only be attached to one computer at a time.

Q: 9. How does the RAID 1 configuration work for video editing? Can you still work directly off of the drive? Working with 4K footage using FCPX & Resolve. Thanks!

A: RAID 1 is a pure backup format. You will go from 8TB capacity to 4TB capacity as one drive will simply copy the same information as the other drive. This can still be used for video editing, it just will not be as fast as a RAID 0 configuration, which is both drives acting as one.

Q: 10. Does this come with the cord to hook up to my 2017 Imac?

A: Yes. Mine came with 2 cords. One with both ends USB-3 and the other one end USB the other end USB-3.

[45 dBA] Purchased it to work with my older Mac Pro 2010 5,1. Especially handy since it has Thunderbolt 3 and USB C. Found out that it tops out just over 500MBS as a RAID 0 using TB3 or the USB-C so... a Sonnet Allegra USB card for USB 3.1 Gen 2 and I'm good to go on my older Mac Pro. When I upgrade to a new Mac Pro I'll switch to TB 3 and it will continue to reap benefits. Wondering if I could swap the 2 hard drives for 4GB SSD for an even faster setup.

[45 dBA] This makes storing a large amount of video footage and accessing it quickly/effectively very easy. A really great tool for video editing.

[Windows, macOS] Set this up as a RAID 1 setup for redundancy so have 10TB to work with. Its fast, easy to use and even fairly portable (use the original packaging for transport).

Thunderbolt3 is a must for use with Mac.

B&H is, as always, very fast to fulfill too.

[80 TB] Very fast 2000 megabyte per second read or write. Not using raid. Don't bother installing softraid unless you want to use it+

[Windows, macOS] Have used G-Tech drives and raids for video editing for years and am very satisfied. Glad that this came out of the box set up as an editing raid to be used on a Mac computer.

[80 TB] I'm using these to capture high-bitrate 1080p ProRes video, with the capture device set to abort if even one single frame is dropped, so I know for certain that these drives are performing as they should. No issues whatsoever. Attractive design, too. Very pleased with purchase.

[45 dBA] This OWC 16TB ThunderBlade RAID drive replaced a 24TB Promise Pegasus RAID and I'm never going back to HDD drives. The Promise could be heard from the other rooms in the house, while the ThunderBlade is completely silent, even when working right next to it on the desk. It's also a LOT smaller. I suggest removing the OWC soft raid software which has caused issues for us in the past. We have the drive formatted as RAID 0 directly in Sonoma 14.3 running on our Mac Studio M1 Ultra. SSDs are a lot more reliable than HDD so I'm more comfortable running these in RAID 0 vs another RAID. However, SSD is not a replacement for a backup, and I have this drive being backed up onto my old HDD once a month.
