Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this support a Nikon Coolpix P900?

A: Absolutely will work with the P900.

Q: 2. Will this work with a R5 with battery grip and L bracket?.

A: For any camera to fit this Cotton Carrier CCS G3 Harness-2, the Cotton Carrier Universal Hubless Adapter Plate, BH # CO766NHP is required. Whether it can work with your set up depends on the actual L-bracket being used, as not all have a 1/4" female thread at the bottom. https://bit.ly/3D9U153

Q: 3. I am 6'8" and wondering about positioning and length of the vest and the comfort whether it should ride higher or lower?

A: The most comfortable way to use the Cotton Carrier CCS G3 Harness-1 (Gray) would depend on your specific body proportions and your personal taste.

Q: 4. I also need to carry a backpack when I do outdoor trips. With this harness, it appears that I can't carry a backpack any more?

A: You can wear a backpack with the Cotton Carrier CCS G3 Harness-1 (Gray)—the straps and the harness are thin enough for that. Another option would be to get a harness that attaches to the backpack straps, for example, the Keyhole Hands-Free Camera Harness (B&H # KEBCKHBL).

Q: 5. It sounds like multiple people have had their camera dislodge from the side holster when stooping or kneeling. Has anyone come up with an effective work-around (e.g., a safety tethering strap)?

A: No, Cotton Carrier has not made a tether that works with the Cotton Carrier CCS G3 Harness-2 (Realtree Xtra Camo)

Q: 6. With the two camera version, can I put most of the weight on my hips and not on my shoulders?

A: The weight gets dispersed between the hips, core, and shoulder. If you just want the weight on the hips you may want to get a belt system like this one. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1655133-REG/spider_camera_holster_240_spiderpro_dslr_dual_camera.html

Q: 7. Will this system work with a camera with a battery grip?

A: Yes, the Cotton Carrier CCS G3 Harness-1 (Gray) will work with a camera with an attached battery grip.

Q: 8. I need back support. Does this harness provide that?

A: Technically no, but it would certainly be much better than using a heavy camera on a traditional strap around your neck or shoulder. This harness would take some strain off your back compared to most other camera carriers.

Q: 9. How can I hike with one camera but two lenses? (ie. I have a wide angle on my camera but want to bring a zoom lens as well).

A: There are two possible solutions. If your lens has a tripod mounting collar with / 20 mounting threads , you can buy a side strap (holster) for Cotton Carrier which is meant to carry a second camera (check B and H website for side holsters for Cotton Carrier) . The holster may attach to your belt rather than the cotton carrier. You can then attach and carry the lens to the holster which will carry the lens on one side of your waist. This will work but the problem with this arrangement is that the heavy lens will hang on the side causing the weight distribution to be non-uniform and therefore uncomfortable. Alternately you can carry the camera with the heavy lens on the chest and the light lens on the side holster. However, I have found a better solution. I had earlier bought an Ikan brand padded camera bag from B and H which is reasonably priced, is meant to be carried as a backpack and can carry upto 14 inch long equipment (Camera, lens or camera plus lens) . Beside the camera and the lens, it has room for other equipment such as ND filters, small monitors etc. So I carry one camera with lens on my chest in Cotton Carrier, one camera with lens and other equipment in my backpack. It has the great advantage that all the weight is on the shoulders and comfortably distributed and none on the side (which is not convenient). By attaching the right weight lens to the camera carried on the chest in Cotton Carrier and storing the rest in backpack, you can make the weight on chest and back somewhat equal and thus more comfortable. This is my suggested solution.

Q: 10. Is this harness just for DSLR's or can it be used with a mirrorless camera such as a Fujifilm X-T3?

A: Cotton Carrier CCS G3 Harness-1 (Gray) BH #CO686GREY can also be used with a mirrorless camera such as a Fujifilm X-T3.

[Arca-Type] Have had back problems for years and CCarrier took care of the pain! Use it mainly with my D500 and 200-500 Nikon lens. If you have problems carrying heavy camera and lens this will solve your problem.

[Arca-Type] I’ve used my harness for a handful of hikes and I love it! Very comfortable and secure. I usually hike with trekking poles so both hands are busy and not able to carry the camera. The camera remains centered and doesn’t bounce. I’m using an R5 with the Canon 200-800 lens which is a long lens. I bought the hand strap which keeps it very secure when removing the camera and using it.

[Arca-Type] Just got back from a hiking vacation in Utah, and having this connected to my backpack strap was perfect for having my camera at my disposal whenever I needed it, and still have my hands free for hiking sticks or anything else.

[0.35 lb] I bought this carrier to put my Nikon Z6II on my pack and it works great. It's secure, out of the way and easy to get on and off. It's really nice for hiking.

[7 x 5 x 1"] Just bought this harness for a trip to Alaska and I am so glad I did. I have a Nikon z8 camera with heavy lenses, and this harness lets me be hands free when hiking, but with easy access on a moments notice. Very comfortable and distributes weight well.

[Aluminum] This harness works as good as I had hoped it would. While hiking, It keeps my DSLR with 100-400mm zoom attached in a position ready to access quickly for photo ops. It's quick and easy to take the harness on or off and to get it adjusted for use. It's also sleek enough to wear under a backpack. I was concerned when I read reviews about users having trouble with the Anodized-Aluminum Hub with Rubber Washer. I installed it with the included allen wrench using moderate torque and haven't had any issue with it coming loose or rotating.

[0.35 lb] This is exactly what I needed! I'm a nature photog (mostly wildlife) and frequently hike into areas. I move this back and forth between my daypack and overnight pack and it works well carrying my Canon R5 with everything from the little 16mm up to the 100-500. I haven't tried it with the big 500mm prime, but I suspect it wouldn't work well - not because the Strapshot couldn't handle it, but more because the weight would drag at the one side of the pack pulling things off kilter. Along those lines, the pack you use needs to be able to support the weight of the kit you're carrying. When I used a lightweight backpack with nothing in it there wasn't enough heft to support the R5 and 100-500 and it was awkward. But when I use Lowpro Fastpack 250 with a couple lenses, snacks, water, etc it carries the R5 and 100-500 fine. The same when I'm out for a couple nights in the backcountry - the big backpack full of gear handles the weight of the camera and lens fine.

And it's SO much better than a strap - the set up is snug to the body and I have with it coming out. I've used it enough now that stowing and removing the camera is pretty easy and the safety strap is secure (I've given it a few sharp tugs to test) so I feel comfortable scrambling around.

I'm so happy with it that I've purchased a second to use with my tripod.

[Arca-Type] I use a flight vest style backpack harness with very wide straps, and this carrier fits perfectly due to the adjustable Velcro sizer. Way more versatile than the similar Peak Design product. I also appreciate the two built in safeties, one tethering the carrier to the backpack in addition to the Velcro, and the other tethering the camera to the carrier in addition to the hub.

[Aluminum] Since it's still winter here and I'm not much of a fan of cold weather I've only tested it once. However, after just 1/2 hour walk with my DSLR and Sigma 150 - 600mm lens I could already tell the difference on my shoulders compared to my sling strap. I was at the point of selling the lens and going with something lighter but really hated to do that. This harness solved my problem, at least until I age a few more years.
