Q: 1. Could someone recommend a great stand for this light? I'd like to be able to tilt it, so I think I need a boom arm. I'd like one that is easy to adjust, not too awkward. I don't think the Matthews Stand tilts. A C-stand with wheels might be nice, but need someone to point me in the right direction! Thanks!
A: The Matthews reverse stand is a good stand but I would go with a c stand for any kind of boom or arm.
Q: 2. When using with an einstein and 50 westcott do I need anything else to attach it?
A: No
Q: 3. I am into portrait, event & wedding photography.( an amateur turned to freelancer & now want to be professional). I own presently- *Nikon D 7100 with the Kit Lens 18-105 mmVR + 50mm f/1.8 + Nikon 70-300 VR. I generally shoot Indian Weddings with Elinchrome Strobes & Nissin Di 866 Mark II Flash. I am planning to get a FX ( D750 most likely) in near future. Now, I want to upgrade to a lens which will be a better one than the 18-105 Kit, must be a FX lens at the same time as I dont want to invest further in DX lens. I will retain my D 7100 as my second body, when I upgrade to FX.If not mistaken a lot, I think I have few options to choose from ( I have a budget concern too)-Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 ( non VR or VR,both are out of reach financially now), Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC & Nikon 24-120 mm VR.My CONFUSION / QUERRY -** Which is better,in terms of reliability , quality assurance & service -Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 OR Nikon 24-120 f/4 VR ?** Is there a HUGE Difference in the image quality/ bokeh / sharpness of both the above lenses,if suppose both are shot at f/4 ?** Will Nikon 24-120 f/4 VR produce noticeably better result than the Nikon 18-105 mm in D 7100 ?** Given that I mostly use external light sources like Elinchrome or Flash, will I miss the f/2.8 too much ?** Is it wiser to invest in 24-120 VR + Nikon 85 mm f/1.8 G rather than one single 24-70 f/2.8 ?Ranjan KM
A: Hi Ranjan: OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) is always more expensive than off brand, but the real advantage are near perfect match between lens and sensor. Off brand may save you some money, and some of them are quite good, my recommendation is, if you can go with the OEM, do it by all means. All the lens you mentioned offer better quality than the original kit lens, and one major reason for a FX lens on a DX body has the advantage of taking the best image area FX can offer, and if you are going to the D750 body, now the game comes down to considering flexibility, image quality, build consistency and focal length versatility. The 24-70 is an outstanding piece of optical engineering, if you could still find the original version (i.e. Non-VR), the bundle you save I would suggest to put it to a solid tripod like Gitzo or the like. You also mentioned you use light set up, the F2.8 may or may not be a game changer for you.concerning bokeh, the larger the aperture, the better. The 24-120 on the other hand, is cheaper, its major advantage is when you are shooting beyond 70mm but not quite up to 120 you have that extra 'reach' without the need to changing to 70-300mm, which itself is a good lens minus nano coating--and I hope Nikon will have its update version with Nano coating someday. That extra 50mm reach will benefit you a great deal, other than saving on cost. You did not mention how many camera bodies you plan to acquire, but if you are using a single D750 as your main body, it will be a very versatile wedding photo tool.Haiving said that, if you can bite the bullet and go with the 24-70, yes, there is an image quality diference between it and the 24-120.
Q: 4. I shoot full frame and have the 24-70 2.8 but was wondering if this was a good replacement lens for my backpacking trips where I don't need that many stops? I understand it's lighter and smaller (which is the obvious gain I'm looking for), but can I still get print quality photos with this? I always have my 14-24 2.8 in my pack but it would sure be nice to cut a little weight if I can substitute my 24-70 2.8 with this thing. And not to mention get way more focal length!
A: I have the 24-120 f/4 and the 70-200 f/2.8. I do not have the f/2.8 for the 14-24 or the 24-70. I use my 24-120 for those times when I need a wide angle. If I can get away with 70 mm or longer, I ALWAYS bear the weight and use my 70-200 f/2.8. I just like the images it produces more than those I get from my 24-120 f/4. If you were making the move from a kit lens to the 14-120, I think you would be happy. Being used to the amazing quality of the images from the 2.8 series, I doubt that you would ever be satisfied with the 24-120, f/4. If I had the 24-70 f/2.8, I think that I would sell my 24-120. It's not that you cannot make print quality images with it. You can. But they won't be as wonderful as the images that you are used to getting. I'm a woman, almost 61-years old. I usually cut my weight by choosing to focus on only one type of image at each shoot. It forces me to consider the type of images I want to capture in advance, and choose the lens that will most likely support that day's shooting. It also helps to protect my sensor from unwanted dust. Every now and then, I wish that I had one of my other lenses, but it usually works very well.
Q: 5. Would this be compatible with alien bee 400 and 86'plm?
A: It sound like it will do the trick just be careful out side.
Q: 6. Is this a US lens or Japan?
A: My 24-120mm f/4 is made in Thailand. The lens hood is also made there. I hope this helps.
Q: 7. How low does it go?
A: I have this stand and the base lays completely flat allowing your light to go all the way to the floor.
Q: 8. Would anyone put an Astra on one of these things? Would love to put stands inside the case.
A: This stand is capable of holding up to 11 LBS, so it can definitely hold a Litepanels Astra panel which weighs about 7 LBS.
Q: 9. whether this lens is suitable for landscape purposes with Nikon Dx ?
A: I've used this lens on both my D7000 (DX) and D610/750 (FX) cameras for landscapes and city scapes with great success. Your true focal distance at the widest is 36mm with a DX camera, but for landscapes that isn't really a huge limitation vs the 21mm Zeiss or even 14-24mm Nikkor. Assuming you are shooting vast wide open landscapes this is an excellent lens to grow into as you explore FX down the road and gains some reach with your current DX setup.
Q: 10. What is this used for
A: A punch down tool is a small hand tool most often used by telecom and data network technicians to install wiring for telephone, computer and various audio networks. This tool allows for the quick and effective cross-connection of wires through the use of 66-type or 110-type connection blocks. The Greenlee PDT SurePunch 110/66 Combination Blades is a punch down tool that can terminate cable in a single punch, and it is designed to cut cable, separate bonded twisted-pair cables and strip insulation and cut wire. You may also use it as a screwdriver or
