Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can the sliding part be reversed so clamp knob doesn't interfere with crank handle?

A: The crank can be used on either end of the rail.

Q: 2. I have macro lenses that have a collar and the plate is oriented perpendicular to the body plate. Is there a way to orient the sled to work with that lens plate?

A: If you attach an arca clamp with built in plate, it will work. Click the link to view; https://bhpho.to/3gpEy3a

Q: 3. Does it perform well with focus stacking?

A: Yes, this will work well for stacking and is a good alternative to the more expensive models.

Q: 4. What range of focal lengths does this work with?

A: It would depend on the physical length of the lens and camera. You don't want the rail to be much longer than the lens that it would appear in the photo and also not too small that you won't be able to find the nodal of the lens. Really Right Stuff MPR-CL Rail with Integral Clamp (5.7") will fit well a lens and camera that measures about 5.7 inches.

Q: 5. Can this be used for attaching L bracket on a Sony A7IV with a sigma 100-400 lens or a Sony 70-300 lens?

A: Yes, the MPR-CL can accept a Sony A7 IV with an L-bracket attached and the Sigma 100-400mm lens or a Sony 70-300mm lens.

Q: 6. What is the supportive accessory shown in the product photo?

A: The Supportive accessory in the listing for the Proaim Double Swivel Clamp for Speed Rails & Scaffold Poles is not in our inventory, however it is similar to the Proaim Vanguard Carriage Studio Production Cart

Q: 7. Is the rail intended to be mounted on a head, or how does it remain stable on a surface?

A: The NiSi Macro Focusing Rail NM-200S with 360° Rotating Clamp (7.9" Length) is meant to be attached to an Arca compatible tripod head but it can also be placed on a flat surface using the included feet.

Q: 8. Hi! If this is mounted vertically on a copy stand (for use as a "microscope" setup), would the action be smooth and precise, even at 4x magnification? It would be a working distance of about 10mm from microscope objective to subject. This would be a ≈5lb. camera/lens setup attached to this rail. If this isn't a suitable rail, could someone recommend one that would work well? Thank you!

A: Because it is a heavier camera and lens set up, I would probably not use this one unfortunately. The one that I would trust the most would be the following: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/554343-REG/Manfrotto_454_454_Micrometric_Positioning_Sliding.html Due to the fact that you can screw down a tension knob that very securely locks it into place. This would be the strongest one that I would recommend for a setup such as yours.

Q: 9. where is this item manufactured?

A: According to the information in our system, the Sunwayfoto Macro Focusing Rail with Screw-Knob Clamp is manufactured in China.

Q: 10. Has anyone used this with a D7200 (or similar) and a Sigma 10-20mm lens and is it the correct one? RRS have said that this is the correct rail but one of the reviews on this page said that using a Sigma 14mm 1.8 art lens it wasn't long enough. Thanks

A: It is expected to work with that setup, but if you personally have doubts there is the 7.4" version of it as well. BH #REMPRCLIIRIL.

[Black] The tooling on the rail is solid so it performs exactly as you would like. I found the legs to be unnecessary, but no worries they are easily unscrewed.

[Black] I heartily recommend the NISI macro rail. I use it on a very sturdy tripod with a large ball head employing an arca-swiss mount. The rail is well built, with no slop in its smooth movements.

The worm gear enables very precise movements. For my purposes I tend to use .5mm slices for focus stacking. If particular you could easily refine that down to .01 mm per image. Once locked down on the tripod head, everything is very stable.

Some reviews have mentioned unwanted creeping. I have not run into that. My setup is a relatively heavy D850 with an old school 200mm Micro lense mounted via the lens foot. This is a pretty good workout for the rail. It has worked like a champ, with no unwanted movements. I even put it pointing nearly straight down, at something over 80 degrees, focused carefully on a tiny detailed pattern. After 10 minutes, the image remained perfectly focussed when looked at on 100% live view magnification.

Other reviewers have complained that the clamp doesn’t open up wide enough to accommodate their plates. Yes and no. If you read their complaints carefully you realize that they want to do drop the plates in vertically instead of sliding them in. Yes, it is correct that standard arca-swiss plates won’t drop in easily. However the clamp opens up readily such that you can slide your set up into it and tighten it up securely.

Not all is perfect. Those little feet for table top use seem inadequate and I simply unscrewed them. The movement effort needed to twist the rail’s clamp to change orientation is pretty darn stiff. Note, to fit the rail in its provided sack for protection, the 2 knobs need to be inline with the rail direction, which is 90 degrees off from how I prefer setting it up.

All in all this is a great rail for precision macro work.

[360°] I have owned 3 or 4 different macro rails from various other companies at pretty high price points and this is hands down the best I have used. It is very smooth and gives zero variation between shots. I could lock in on a tiny detail and do a 20 shot focus stack and maintain basically the same frame instead of it bouncing all over the place. The build quality is amazing. It is a hefty piece and I find it very dependable.

The quick release features is sooo useful for locking in to where you want to be quickly.

The feet are solid and high quality however I don't use them, I keep them in the box just in case but I have no real need for them.

I love how many measure marks are all over this thing to standardize your adjustments and really hone your stacking to an increment that you are confident in. Makes everything replicable which as a professional is very important in my workflows.

[Aluminum] This focusing rail is very well built. Rock solid. I did one focus stack project so far with over two hundred shots and my final image is spot on focused. The mechanism that moves the camera is super smooth and all the knobs etc feel like a precision intrument when operated. I highly recommend this rail...well worth the money.

[Black] I have to say these things were a life saver on a shoot I was just on. Not only did they resist high wind speed and keep their shape, but they are light as a feather. Something that will stand the test of time! Good Purchase.
