Offering long reach with an advanced feature set and optical design, the OM SYSTEM M.Zuiko 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO Lensfrom OM SYSTEM M.Zuiko 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO Lensis a versatile, 80-300mm-equivalent telephoto zoom for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras. As part of the PRO series of advanced lenses, this zoom distinguishes itself with a bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture for consistent illumination throughout the zoom range to suit working in a variety of lighting conditions. Its optical design makes use of a series of aspherical and low dispersion glass elements to suppress chromatic and spherical aberrations for notable sharpness and clarity, and a ZERO lens coating reduces flare and ghosting for high-contrast, color-accurate imaging.

Complementing the optics, a dual VCM autofocus system offers fast and near-silent focusing performance to suit both stills and movie recording applications. A manual focus clutch permits quick switching between AF and MF, and a programmable L-Fn button avails lens-based control over shooting settings. The lens is also weather sealed for working in trying conditions, and a rotating tripod collar is included for improved balance and support when working atop a tripod or monopod.

Telephoto zoom is designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras and provides an 80-300mm equivalent focal length range.

Bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture suits working in a variety of lighting conditions throughout the zoom range.

One aspherical ED (extra-low dispersion) element, two aspherical elements, one Super ED element, three ED elements, and one high-refractive element are featured within the optical design to minimize both spherical and chromatic aberrations, distortion, and color fringing throughout the zoom range while also contributing to overall image sharpness, clarity, and color accuracy.

A ZERO (Zuiko Extra-low Reflection Optical) coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.

A Dual VCM (voice coil motor) system is used for quick and near-silent autofocus performance. By separating the focusing mechanism into two groups controlled by separate linear AF motors, focus speeds are faster, and the friction-free movement is notably quieter to benefit video recording.

Manual-focus clutch lets you quickly pull the focusing ring into place for direct, intuitive focus control.

Program the L-Fn (lens function) button for easily accessible settings adjustment.

Dust-, freeze-, and splash-proof design uses 11 separate seals to ensure the lens's performance in inclement and harsh conditions.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm produces a smooth bokeh quality.

Rotating tripod collar offers a stable platform for working with this lens on a tripod or monopod.

Pair with the optional M.Zuiko Digital MC-14 1.4x Teleconverter to further extend the reach to a 112-420mm equivalent focal length range or with the MC-20 2x Teleconverter to further extend the reach to a 160-600mm equivalent focal length range.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 3. If is the same, why the new OM SYSTEM it´s 120 gr heavier than de old one ?

A: The OM SYSTEM M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO Lens is the same as the one labeled Olympus. The weight difference is that the OM one is listed with the tripod ring and foot and the Olympus one is not. Note they do weight the same.

Q: 4. What features do I lose if I use this lens with the Panasonic Lumix G9 II? How does it compare to the Panasonic 14-140?

A: Aside from the slight optical design elements, the OM SYSTEM M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-150mm f/4-5.6 II Lens does not have image stabilization built in. The Panasonic Lumix G Vario 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6 II ASPH. POWER O.I.S. Lens (B&H # PA1414035562) does have image stabilization, which would assist when filming handheld. [0.21x] The testing was done using an Olympus EM-1 II. When mounted on a tripod and using a release cable, no IS, test through the full range at different apertures turned out fairly sharp, with not too much fall-off at the edges.

In A-B comparisons with the Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8 the OM 12-100m f/4.0 fared reasonably well. Shots through comparable ranges, mostly at f/4.0 and f/5.6, again showed them close, with maybe an edge to the 12-40mm. A big difference, though, was when using C-AF&TR mode, the 12-40mm was consistently better. Using
single shot for both gave essentially the same results.

The purported additional IS with the lens/camera combination did not seem to make one iota of difference. The 12-40mm and the 12-100mm seemed identical at lower shutter speeds. Repeated testing under a fairly controlled environment (static target, consistent lighting, etc.) confirmed this.

The 12-100mm seems to have slightly less contrast than the 12-40m.

Final conclusion is the 12-100mm is worth the cost and compares well with the 12-40mm (which I've used for years so am very familiar with), but the 12-100mm requires a little more work to get the same results. Shipping firmware version is 1.4, same as the original Olympus 12-100, which is consistent with this being the same lens, just relabelled with the OM Systems label.

I'd give it a 4.5 if that was possible, compared to a 5.0 I'd give the 12-40mm.

[72 mm (Front)] This is a terrific addition to the Micro Four Thirds system -- a fast, tough telephoto zoom with excellent optical performance, fully deserving of the PRO label. The lens is large by Micro Four Thirds standards, but not when compared to lenses covering similar focal ranges on APS-C or 35mm systems, or the Four Thirds ZD 50-200mm lens. Focus performance is very good with my E-M1 in both S-AF and C-AF. This lens also features a manual focus ring which can be engaged at any time, as well as a programmable button on the lens body that can be used to stop C-AF or switch focus modes. The rendering of out-of-focus areas and highlights is very good, but the lens is sensitive to flare. Luckily the clever hood means that you won't be tempted to leave the hood behind. There is some mild vignetting when wide open, but Olympus cameras can compensate for this using the Shading Compensation setting. The lens does appear to be somewhat power-hungry, no doubt due to the use of dual focus motors. I have been getting about 400 images from a single battery before the battery indicator starts flashing, which is maybe 20% less than I get with other Micro Four Thirds lenses like the 12-40mm or 75mm. The use of a power battery holder / grip is highly recommended to eliminate power concerns and make lens handling more pleasant.

[Autofocus] PROS: Great range (especially with 1.4x teleconverter) - 40 - 210mm (80 - 420mm FF). Very sharp at all magnifications. Great color rendition and contrast. Smooth zoom and manual focus controls. All metal construction. Included tripod mount is solid and can be used as a handle when using without tripod. Note that this is a big lens and works better with bigger MFT bodies.

CONS: Bokeh is a bit busy unless far in the background, then super smooth. Lens hood is cool at first but unreliable. Mine failed while in the bag (not due to rough handling) - basically adhesive simply died and retention ring and ball bearings simply came apart - as I pulled my lens out of the bag the lens hood simply feel apart and fell off.

[Autofocus] I've put off and put off on this purchase. In fact I bought the 100-400mm last year instead of this one. And don't get me wrong the 100-400 is great for birds far away on in trees. But it is just a little heavy for me. This made me a little sad that I didn't get the 40-150mm instead.

So this year when it was on sale I bought it. With the intent of selling my 100-400mm to help with the cost. But I've change my mind. I'm keeping both. This 40-150mm is perfect for my backyard birds. And the 100-400mm is great for all others.

After playing around with the 40-150mm I have found that it is not only great for your backyard birds but also your pet photography, landscapes too. To be honest, it hasn't come off my camera yet. And the fact that it is a f2.8 is a bonus for me. The other great thing is that this lens doesn't extend like my 100-400mm. Again a big plus for me.

I will say the lens hood takes some getting use to and can get in the way if you shoot manual, so I just leave it off.

If you're on the fence like I was, take it from me, don't hesitate and wait on getting this lens. You'll be sad. Just take the plunge and enjoy doing photography again.
