Equipped with an 2TB OWC Aura Ultra IV PCIe 4.0 x4 SSD, the Express 1M2 delivers speeds of up to 3151 MB/s, which is fast enough for 8K raw and 4K video in slow motion as well as ProRes and other demanding codecs, plus high resolution photos in both raw and compressed formats. It comes preformatted APFS for macOS 10.13 and later, iPadOS 13 and later, and iOS 17, but may be used with Windows, Chrome, Linux, and Android with a simple reformat. It connects to your host system using a 40 Gb/s USB4 port, but is backward compatible with 10 Gb/s USB 3.2 Gen 2, which delivers real world speeds of up to 990 MB/s.

[0.855 lb] Works great with my Macs for video editing. Use Disk Utility to re-format drive for Apple, and it's plug-and-play. Bought to begin editing files on the road and finish at home. Scared by SanDisk reliability and wanted to get full use of Thunderbolt 4. Did not test speeds but it's very snappy. When expanded as in product photo, a small fan cools drive. Collapsing center turns it off and reduces size by a half-inch (to 4.0 inches) for travel. 5

[6.8 x 5.9 x 2"] I had a support chat with OWC first before ordering this because of the cost involved. Wanted to be sure that I was sure that it would work with my 2019 Mac Pro. They assured me it would, so I ordered confidently. Installation was simper than simple, just lift the top, place the card in a slot, replace the top, boom. Booted, holding my breath, and it showed up in the disk utility. But showed only 8.64GB of available storage. I tried the Erase (initialize) option, Still 8.64GB. Then, went into the partition setup of the disk utility, and voila, there it showed the full 4TB (well, 3.84TB) storage. Once I claimed it all for a single large partition and then reinitialized the drive (using MacOS Extended, Journaled), all was well. I was then able to make full use of the drive. It seems funny to call it a drive, when it's actually just a thin chip on a PCIE-card. Even what you see in the picture there isn't really it. Most of that bulge is just heat sink. Amazing they can stuff that much storage onto something so small. Also a rather amazing amount to pay for a drive, but I wanted fast, non-internal storage, and lots of it, so felt the need and went for it. So far, it is behaving perfectly, is indeed fast. So after a few anxious 8GB moments, I'm relieved and happy. 5

[Bus Powered] Brought this unit to house a 4TB NVMe SSD. Super easy to do. Open the case after unscrewing a few screws. Lock in the SSD. And it works like a charm. The case is a solid aluminum construction. Very sturdy. The enclosure has the fins design for heat dissipation. So far I transferred over 2.5TB content without heating up the unit other than just warm to the touch. The unit together with the thunderbolt cable offers much faster read and write speed than off the shelve portable SSD. The combined prices are comparable too. 5

[ M.2 SSD ] This is by far the fastest external m.2 SSD enclosure I have now. It reaches the advertised speeds (I do have to use the cable they ship it with). I have many other brands enclosures with thunderbolt interface and get about 1400 MB/s Write and 2100 MB/s Read speeds. With the OWC Express I get over 3000 MB/s Write and Read speed. Oddly if I use one of my other thunderbolt cables it gets only 900 MB/s write and 900 MB/s read speed, even though using the same thunderbolt cable with other enclosures I still get the 1400 MB/s and 2100 MB/s speed. Maybe I have to do more testing to see why this is. I certainly will buy more of the OWC Express enclosures. 5

[0.855 lb] Paired this with a 4TB Samsung 990 which B&H had on sale. Read/write speeds are 4 times faster than my Samsung T7 drives at 3200 mb/s. Compares favorably to my Mac’s 5200+ hard drive. Much improved photo and video editing so far. 5
