A high-resolution 20.4MP Live MOS sensor and updated TruePic IX image processor work together to provide fast shooting performance, a sensitivity range up to ISO 25600, and versatile 4K video recording capabilities. Additionally, the sensor and processor provide an impressive continuous shooting rate of up 30 fps when shooting in the camera's new Pro Capture mode, enabling you to capture fast-moving subject when time is of the essence.

An advanced autofocus system combines both 121 phase-detection AF points and 121 contrast-detection AF points for focusing performance that is both quick and accurate. All 121 phase-detection points are cross-type for improved precision in mixed lighting conditions, providing enhanced subject tracking capabilities. Different focusing modes are available to suit working in various shooting conditions as well, including Group Target 25-point mode for moving subjects such as birds and wildlife. Face Detection and Eye Detection AF have also been upgraded, and the camera features a recently designed Starry Sky AF mode as well as individual AF area settings for vertical and horizontal positions.

In-body, sensor-shift image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 6.5 stops with any lens in use and compensates for camera movements that become especially noticeable when working with telephoto shots, macro imagery, and long exposures. Furthermore, this unique image stabilization system works across five axes to compensate for vertical angle rotation, horizontal angle rotation, horizontal shift, vertical shift, and rolling camera shake movement. This range of detected movements benefits traditional still image shooting as well as movie recording and working with moving subjects more effectively. Additionally, when paired with select lenses featuring optical image stabilization, shake compensation up to 7.5 stops is possible.

The sensor and processor also support recording both DCI (4096 x 2160) and UHD (3840 x 2160) 4K movies. When working in DCI, a true 24p frame rate is used, while UHD 4K is available in frame rates up to 30p. Audio recording is possible using the built-in stereo microphone, and an external mic jack is available for improved audio recording quality. Additionally, a Time-lapse Movie mode is also available for recording up to 4K UHD resolution.

  • Simulating the effects of a neutral density filter, Live ND 16 mode results in blurred subject movement by combining exposures into a single image to replicate a photo taken at slower shutter speeds. This is particularly suitable for photographing moving water and clouds.
  • Focus stacking mode records multiple sequential frames then composites the exposures into a single image that exhibits an extended depth of field.
  • High-Res Shot mode offers the equivalent output of a 50MP image.
  • Live Composite mode gradually builds up an exposure over time without overexposing key elements within the frame and is ideal for long exposures, nighttime shooting, and light painting applications.
  • New Vertical Video mode provides a 9:16 aspect ratio for easily integrating videos on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and other similar platforms.

    • High-resolution 2.36m-dot electronic viewfinder for eye-level monitoring and clear, distortion-free viewing.
    • Rear 3.0" 1.04m-dot LCD monitor features a vari-angle design to support working from a variety of angles, and it is also a touchscreen for intuitive menu navigation and image playback.
    • Included BLS-50 rechargeable lithium-ion battery is used to provide approximately 310 shots per charge.
    • In-camera battery charging is supported via the micro-USB port.
    • Single SD memory card slot is UHS-II compatible for fast read/write speeds.
    • Wide accessory compatibility provided with the incorporation of a microphone port, a top hot shoe, micro-USB and micro-HDMI ports, and a 2.5mm port for optional remotes.
    • Rugged splashproof, dustproof, and freezeproof construction incorporates extensive sealing throughout the body design to accommodate working in harsh weather conditions and trying environments.
    • Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth permits wireless image sharing and remote camera control from a linked smartphone or tablet.

    Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this lens work with the OM-5 focus stacking feature?

A: Unfortunately, the OM SYSTEM M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-150mm f/4-5.6 II Lens is not compatible with focus stacking on the OM5.

[JPEG, Raw] I bought the OM-5 as a smaller, lighter companion to the OM-1. The OM-5 lacks subject detection (birds, mainly, for me), but I plan to use it as an everyday-carry and fun camera that nonetheless has image quality that's about equivalent to that of the OM-1. Not bad. Some people complain about the outdated USB connection and the older Olympus menu system. Yes, USB-C would be faster and more modern. And yes, the menu system of the OM-1 is more intuitive. But I am looking to set up the OM-5 so that it's basically customized to the ways I shoot, and for that its menus are OK. I'm not trying to master every nook and cranny of the camera's capabilities. I have set the camera up to meet my needs for now (as I have the OM-1), and will explore new features when I need to know about them. The OM-5 is a refresh of the Olympus E-M5 iii, which is an excellent camera and is available used at attractive prices. But in the end, even though the OM-5 is just a refresh/update of the E-M5 iii, the OM-5 is a better camera-- better weathersealing, improved processor, hand-held high-res, starry sky AF, etc. You can find other cameras that improve on the OM-5 in some ways. However, it's hard to find another camera this small and light, with IP53 weathersealing, outstanding image stabilization, a huge range of lenses available (new and used), and all in this price range.

[Stereo ] I have or have had most micro 4/3 cameras and I have to say this is the best of all, even better than the OM-1 and G9, since it is much smaller and the image quality is the same. GH6 is huge and it defeats the purpose of micro 4/3 system. And it is the best weather sealed of all of them, while being the lightest. It is also a pleasure to use.

[Shoe Mount] A high quality camera with all the right settings, compact size, and super image and video quality. I bought this for underwater use with an Ikelite housing, but above or below the water the ease of use, compact size, and picture quality are terrific.

[2.3 lb] I recently gave my Olympus OM D M5 MKIII to my daughter as an upgrade from her Lumix G7 since she is now using her camera more seriously. I really like the Olympus and it was my primary camera body for all of my Macro Photography due to its compact size. So this was the perfect excuse for getting the newer OM System version. As much as I didn’t think it was worth upgrading from the Olympus, now that I have it I have to be honest and say I really do appreciate the minor but great improvements. Starting with the new TruePic IX Processor, which does slightly improve the overall image quality (honestly, mostly in the specs, not enough that I’ve actually seen yet, more shots will let me know).
The 50 megapixel Handheld High Res shot mode will come in handy from time to time.
Probably the nicest new feature that I will use more often is the Live ND. Also having a higher rated weather proofing at IP-53 is a big plus. Even the image stabilization is improved by a full stop from 6.5 to 7.5EV with Sync-IS lenses (up from 5.5 to 6.5EV with any lens).
So overall I am more than happy with this newer version that OM System has introduced.
Would I have upgraded knowing now what I do having the newer camera in my hands, still probably not but if this is a new camera decision for you I definitely recommend this fantastic camera! This compact, lightweight and incredibly great image quality and solidly built.

[-2 to 20 EV] I have a Nikon D810 and some Zeiss Milvus lenses; they are exceptional products but are big, bulky and heavy. By no means am I the first person to note that full frame cameras and their equipment have the disadvantage of size and weight.

After reading a number of reviews on the B&H website, and reading other reviews from various sources, I decided to give the micro 4/3 system a try. Although some reviewers have commented on the menu system of the Olympus being quirky I did not find it difficult to get used to. Although the camera is small, it is not at all difficult to hold; the thumb rest on the rear of the camera leads to a comfortable grip. I have fairly large hands and have no complaints about the grip.

The IBIS five axis stabilization system is amazing; as many others have claimed, one can hand hold the camera in quite low light situations. Another two features that add to the value of the camera are the in camera focus stacking system and the high resolution mode.

A husband and wife team that produce numerous U tube videos some years ago predicted the micro 4/3 system would disappear. I have noticed many other commenters also like the OM-5. I think the OM-5, the just released OM-1 mark II and the expected release of the OM-10 will demonstrate the folly of making predictions about the demise of the micro 4/3 system.

[Yes] I take and use my OM-5 everywhere I go. Street and city-scape photography all around the Baltimore area. I've taken photographs in pouring rain, heavy snowfall, chilly Fall days. It is a trusted travel companion. Paired with M.zuiko prime or telephoto zoom lenses, it's simply terrific. I've photographed everything from ice crystal macros to the moon, cityscapes and birds. Compact and capable. An absolutely wonderful camera.

[JPEG, Raw] I have been using a Canon full frame camera for years now but I have often questioned it because of how much it weighs and how large it is for doing landscapes while hiking. I've always been told that full frame is the only way to get proper photos and the creamy bokeh and all that. I have to say that after using the OM-5 I can see that what I was told is a total myth. I can get as good or even better results with this smaller mft sensor than with a full frame sensor. When I say better I am talking about its amazing features like 50mp hand held photos which are amazing, the live ND, built in focus bracketing and all in a much much smaller package, even the lenses are a fraction of the size and at an even more affordable price. It feels liberating to switch to micro four thirds and I recommend it for everyone who photographs in the mountains.

[2.3 lb] It has what I was missing in my beloved Pen F, weather sealing and live ND. It is a thing of beauty. Light as a feather without lenses but so capable that I sold my Sony full frame system, which it was great for image quality, but not cool looking, heavy and bulky. For $1,000, you cannot beat this. The G9, which I also own is a big camera, not so great for traveling, therefore the OM-5 will be in my travel bag way more often than the G9.

[1,040,000 Dot] Still learning all the menu options. Quite happy with the performance so far with the stock 12-45mm f/4 lens (can't beat the price of ~$200 over the body price). Added a 40-150mm f/4 for daytime shots. This 40-150 is a little longer and heavier, but wow, does it open up possibilities for hikes in the mountains. I get home to view the pics and see things I didn't even see when snapping the shot.
