The MI-302 recessed box is designed for installation between 16" studs and requires an opening 29" tall, by 14.5" wide, by 3.5" deep. The maximum mantle depth that can be accommodated while still allowing the screen to tilt fully is 14.5"; at 15.75" tilting is no longer possible. This is recommended for decorative fireplaces with a maximum 100° heat development. It is not suitable for mounting above primary heat sources.

Note: The deeper the mantle the higher the mount needs to be installed. Ensure you consider TV size, mantle depth, and ceiling height prior to purchase. Additionally, only TVs with screen size 60" and larger will fully cover the recessed box in the upper position. With TVs smaller than 60" a part of the box can be visible.

A: I bought this item for deep sky astrophotography. It is rated for 11 pounds, but for photography this is not realistic. With a wide angle lens on a light load it works very well. For heavier lenses it is very poor. I had 8 pounds with 300mm focal length, perfect alignment and excellent balance, and it in unable to consistently produce pinpoint stars at exposures over 10 seconds. At 30 seconds to a minute the keeper rate drops to 30% with pinpoint stars in only about 10% of images. I would not recommend this unit for photography. For a telescope and viewing it might be sufficient, but not if you want to do any exposure with long/heavy scopes or lenses. Hope this helps.

A: Using a DSLR should not require you to use a counterweight unless the camera and lens combo approaches the 11 pound threshold. I purchased all of the accessories just in case they were needed I'd have them to use. I only use the counterweight when affixing my ETX to the ball head. Depending on the total weight of the camera and lens, coupled with the stability of the tripod you have, you may want to have some form of counterweight, even if just for the tripod itself, to ensure steady images.

A: I don't think so and I don't know why you would want to. It's going to perform best as a complete design. The legs that come with it are rock solid and the it has individual bubble levels for E/W and N/S instead of one of those maddening 'central bubble' levels on my other mount.Also, if you're going to use the Gemini 2 control system, the mounting bracket for that is on the top part of the tripod legs.
