  A: The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4D IF-ED Lens does have an unusual rear aperture and does lack a rear rubber gasket. However, I feel it very unlikely that real image compromise due to dust would occur with this lens. In fact, the far greater reality is dust on the camera's sensor. With this excellently sharp lens that is good for either DX or FX cameras, I say just exercise normal caution when changing lenses.Since animals are rarely close enough and they move unpredictably and quickly, I would suggest you might consider longer zoom lenses such as:Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Lens (Refurbished) B&H # NI20050056VQ Back ordered, no date set but affordable.
