Doubling the speed of its predecessor, USB 3.2 Gen 2 features a maximum throughput of 10 Gb/s when used with compatible devices.

RAID 0 (Striping) combines data evenly across both drives simultaneously, dramatically increasing performance. RAID 0 will be viewed as one single storage unit. If one disk in the RAID system fails, all data stored on the installed disks will be lost.

RAID 1 (Mirroring) consists of two drives storing duplicate copies of the same data. In this mode, the data is simultaneously written to both drives. The speed of operation is slow in comparison to RAID 0, but if one drive fails, no data is lost. Simply replace the failed drive. The total capacity is equal to one drive. For example, if installing 2 x 1TB drives, the total capacity will be 1TB.

JBOD (Clear) is simply a collection of drives that are recognized as separate drives by the OS. JBOD provides no performance increase or redundancy. This is the default setting.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this drive support daisy chaining?

A: This drive only has one USB port for its host connection, so it will not be able to daisy chain to another device.

Q: 2. How long is the USB cable?

A: Unfortunately the length of the cable is not specified by the manufacturer.

Q: 3. The specs state is has USB-C 3.2 but looking online it seems this is a USB-C 3.1 Gen 2. What are the specs for this one?

A: This LaCie 16TB d2 Professional USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 External Hard Drive has USB 3.2 Gen 2 (up to 10Gb/s) USB-C port. https://www.lacie.com/www-content/datasheets/pdfs/d2-professional-DS1987-11-2202US-en_US.pdf

Q: 4. Can the USB-A and USB-C hub connectors in the back both be used at the same time?? Or is it just one at a time??

A: The USB A and USB C ports labeled HUB on the back of the Oyen Digital MiniPro RAID V4 16TB 2-Bay USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 Portable SSD & RAID Array (2 x 8TB), B&H # OY2RV4SS16T, could be used at the same time. Keep in mind that these ports are just a USB hub so in order for you to use them, the USB C port labeled Main would need to be connected to the computer. You could then use the USB A or USB C ports for other USB Accessories. This would not allow you to use the drive between two computers at the same time.

Q: 5. I understand that this drive comes pre-formatted as EXFAT, if necessary can it be reformatted to another system?

A: Yes, you can reformat it to any other file system.

Q: 6. Is this compatible with macbook air m1 2020?

A: Yes, this is compatible and comes with the cable you need in the box.

Q: 7. Wont copy files over 20gb, can you help me?

A: Check if the drive is formatted to FAT32, which limits its file size.

Q: 8. I need a longer cable to connect this drive to my computer. Closer to 6 feet would be ideal. Any suggestions?

A: BH #KRCU32FF6 would be appropriate for use with the LaCie d2 Professional USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 External Hard Drive.

Q: 9. Can this drive be laid on its side, not mounted vertically? I need it to fit into a horizontal under-desk shelf.

A: No, the base of the LaCie 20TB d2 Professional USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 External Hard Drive is part of the aluminum enclosure.

Q: 10. Is this compatible with a Thunderbolt 3 port on a new iMac?

A: Yes, the LaCie 4TB d2 Professional USB 3.1 Type-C External Hard Drive BH #LASTHA400080 is compatible with Thunderbolt 3 and USB Type C ports.

[2.79 lb] There are many USB Raid drives available, but most are 5 Gb/s or slower. So the SSD speed is wasted, and what you get is about the same as a spinning HD drive.

This dual Raid does indeed connect at 10 Gb/s which is double or more the speed of many dual drive enclosures.

[2.79 lb] It works just fine. Well, let’s see how time treat it. I’m very happy with the response. I got from the employees of BNH. They’ve always been good. I’ve been buying things from them for over 20 years. Thanks to all the staff.

[ 2.5" HDD ] We use WD passports to back up ALL our digital photo files. Uploads are relatively quick.

[Aluminum] Initially, the formatting process for Mac was a bit complicated. Once I was able to resolve that, it was smooth sailing! Lots of space and I love the white color. A great backup for all of your important files. I love it!

[Yes, RAID 0/1] One of my new years resolutions/projects was to get away from HDD/spindle drives completely and get my entire digital life on SSD. This would require a 16TB drive and the only two choices at this time were the Glyph Blackbox and Oyen Digital MiniPro RAID V4. I use a Glyph 2TB Blackbox at work and it seems stable and solid. But I chose the Oyen for a few reasons.

The price difference of $600.

The RAID option to have two separate SSDs actually works better for my purpose. I have an inflexible, rigid archive of files that is just under 8TB and just fits in one of the drives, and I use the other drive for current projects and files.

The ability to daisy chain was the deal maker for me, and requires the power adaptor which is provided. After reformatting both drives I successfully transferred the 8TB archive files over although it took FOREVER going thru a USB A hub. Now that I think about it, I am surprised how many drives on the market (both SSD and HDD) don't have daisychaining.

I have always been a believer in solid state memory going back to the microdrive vs CF Card photography days at the turn of the millenium. Since that time the durability and speed of solid state has been firmly established, but the prohibitive costs have made it difficult to switch over. While I wouldn't exactly call the Oyen MiniPro RAID exactly cheap, the cost per terabyte ratio is doable for me. And it certainly is nice not to have to wait for HDDs to spin up anymore or worry about moving parts. If the Oyen holds up as well as I hope, I will be getting another to daisychain for a backup unit.

[10 TB] I have always been a Toshi fan and these are reliable as ever. Not fast but I only use these for archiving. I own 2 of these and have not let me down.

[Yes, RAID 0/1] Took about 2 minutes from the time it was out of the box until the batch of pictures was in it.
Access after loading is same as any other file on the computer.
