Elegant and versatile, the Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f/1.2 Lens Canon RFis a fast and compact wide-normal prime for Canon RF-mount mirrorless cameras. Featuring an optimized optical design, two aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion for impressive clarity and sharpness throughout the aperture range. The lens is also defined by its bright f/1.2 maximum aperture, which benefits working with selective focus techniques and also aids working in low-light conditions. Additionally, a 10-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality, and the lens's manual focus operation permits working with subjects as close as 1.1' away.

Wide-normal prime is designed for full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless cameras, but can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 64mm equivalent focal length.

Notably fast f/1.2 maximum aperture helps control depth of field for shallow depth of field shooting, and also benefits working in difficult lighting conditions.

Manual focus design enables a minimum focusing distance of 1.1'.

A 10-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.

Electronic contacts relay Exif information to the camera for accurate focus assist functions and metadata recording.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How is the focus breathing on this lens for film/video work?

A: The Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f/1.2 Aspherical Lens for Sony E for a manual lens. For one it is very good. Note, it will like most lenses have some focus breathing. is less than some but is not as good as a Cine lens.

Q: 2. What lens profile for the 40mm can be used in the Leica SL2? I don't see a match in the SL2 menu.

A: The 50mm porfile would work best.

Q: 3. this lens cover full frame sensor like the sony a7r3?

A: Yes, this is a FF lens.

Q: 4. I am assuming that this lens would work with the fuji m to x adapter and a x pro 3? I'd like to try it with focus peaking. I'm older, and concerned about manual focus. Any thoughts on using focus peaking in a Fuji x pro 3?

A: Focus peaking on the Fuji Xpro 3 does work well with Voigtlander lenses with M mount used with the adapter to Fuji X. There are also other aids you can use to manual focus that also help for example the manual focus assist zoom function.

Q: 5. Can I use this lens with a Canon R5 camera?

A: Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f/1.2 Aspherical Lens has a Leica M mount. To use it on the Canon R5 you will need this adapter: Metabones Leica M Lens to Canon RF-mount Camera T Adapter https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1501857-REG/metabones_mblm_efr_bt1_leica_m_lens_to.html

Q: 6. What lens profile works best for this on an M9?

A: There is no set setting but for the 40mm most use 50mm setting on the M9 when using a lens that is close to 50mm.

Q: 7. Can this lens be used with the leica CL?

A: Which CL are you referring to? the digital (CL) camera or the film (CL/CLE) camera? On the film camera, there is no problem; it's an M mount lens.

Q: 8. The Leica mount Voigtlander 40mm f1.2 has red aspherical lettering while none of the others do. Is there a difference?

A: I am fairly certain this is a design element borrowed from some Leica lenses which have some lettering in an orange color.

Q: 9. this lens cover the full frame sensor on the sony a7s2?

A: The Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f/1.2 Aspherical Lens is a full frame sensor or film camera lens. It will cover the sensor of a a7S II.

Q: 10. Does the 35mm 1.2 lens shade fit this? I don't see one that specifically lists the 40 1.2, only the 35.

A: The 35mm f1.2 Voigtlander bayonet shade is the recommended shade for this lens.

[Canon RF] Using this adapted to a Fuji XT3 and it has quickly become my favorite lens to use. Unlike the Fuji lenses, the manual focus is a joy to use. Very smooth operation with the MF ring. Image quality is great. F1.2 is fun to use and gets very sharp by F5.6. Wish they had a Nokton 23mm to match the quality of this one. Tried this lens on my A7RIII also. Works well, but there is just something about the rendering with the Fuji that is special.

[f/1.2] Using VM mount on Sony A7rII via Voight adapter and Leica M6.  Works great on both.  Compact, solid, elegant.  Beautiful images wide open and stopped down.  CV on a roll lately.

FWIW, the VM is somewhat smaller, which I like.

Theres a very extensive discussion of this lens over at Fried Miranda.  Steve Huff goes on at length comparing the E-Mount vs VM - reaching no real conclusions.

[f/1.2] It's a lovely lens that produces a rich, cool-toned contrast similar to the Zeiss Milvus line, but with a dreamlike character when shooting wide open. Stop down to f/2, and it's as sharp as most will need. Conveniently sized and just the right weight, with a smooth focus ring and a clicking aperture ring. 40mm is a really nice focal length for a small, fast lens like this. If you're someone who likes to shoot manual focus, this scratches the itch. :)

I personally love lenses that render with more character since a lot of high-resolution full frame sensors can be a bit too detailed/sharp for my taste, when combined with razor sharp optics — so having something to take the edge off and produce a bit of an organic look is really nice. That being said, the aberrations are still controlled to an extent; they're only ever a bit overwhelming when shooting at f/1.2 at minimum distance — but of course, you would generally stop down when shooting that close anyway, so I think Voigtlander has balanced the rendering quite nicely.

And of course, Canon makes it stupid easy to manual focus on their R-series cameras — so if you have both Canon and Sony, I highly recommend this lens for the RF mount. Very much looking forward to future RF lenses from Voigtlander!

[Canon RF] I purchased the Nokton 40mm F/1.2 for my Canon EOS R7. This lens is tact sharp and well built. Keep in mind that this is a manual focus lens, but don't let it steer you away. This lens communicates with your camera and eye detection works flawlessly. The focus ring turns smoothly and I love the aperture step clicks. I'm very happy with my purchase and look forward to using more of Voigtlander RF manual lenses! :)

[1.255 lb] I have had the Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f/1.2 lens on my Leica M10 for about a week or so and it is great. I agree with all the other positive reviews. I use it mostly for street and landscape/seascape photography and it is the perfect focal length for those. There is one very minor thing that I don't care for, and that is the distance scale on the focusing ring, feet are in red which are hard to read on the black lens.. That should not be a deal breaker or discourage anyone from getting this lens.

[Manual Focus] I have had this lens for over a year now. It is usually on an M240. The combination of the great color of the 40mm and the M240 CMOS sensor makes for great natural color. The field of view seems to always work, too. All in all this lens has yet to disappoint me in the time I have had it.

[55°] Great performance, especially for the money. Originally purchased for my CL but it now is my main M6 optic. It just plain works. I'm getting smooth bokeh but edgy sharpness. It also gets along well on my Fuji X bodies which can be hit or miss for me with many adapted lenses. Beautiful build quality that is tactilely gratifying, too.

[Manual Focus] I bought the lens on the morning of my recent one-week stay in NYC and I don't regret it.
I put on the lens on my M240 in the adjoining waiting room close to the entrance of B&H (like many others).
I used it for most of the pictures I took during my stay (apart from a few wide-angle pictures with my Super-Elmar 21mm and a few telephoto pictures with my Summarit 90mm).
I really loved the quality of the pictures and being able to rely on an opening of 1.2 is very convenient in some streets in NYC (often with low light on one side of the street).

[58 mm (Front)] I bought this to use on my Canon R mount bodies. I also own and use the Canon RF 50mm f1.2 lens, which is truly exceptional. The downside is that the Canon 50mm is big, heavy, and very expensive. I don’t really need AF for portrait and similar work. So I am pleasantly surprised at the modest size of the Voigtlander 40mm. Also, it is exquisitely made and a joy to use.
