The CB22 from Pearl Microphone Labs is a large-diaphragm condenser microphone with a figure-8 (bidirectional) polar pattern designed for professional studio recording. At the heart of the CB22 lies the rubber-fitted capsule based on the pearl 2800, a unique rectangular-shaped condenser capsule that offers an extremely smooth off-axis response, detailed sound reproduction, and very-low self noise.

The tall and narrow capsule gives the CB22 a distinctive sonic signature, similar in some ways to a ribbon microphone. The detailed transient reproduction and smooth off-axis response makes the 22 series an excellent choice for orchestral and choral recordings, but it also performs well on other transient-rich sources, such as acoustic guitar or piano. The transformerless circuitry ensures a clear, natural sound and very low noise. The figure-8 polar pattern is very well suited for capturing two performers on either side of the microphone. In addition, the bidirectional capsule makes the CB22 ideal as a side microphone for stereo M/S recording configurations when paired with a cardioid mic. The mic is also available as a matched stereo pair, great for Blumlein recording configurations.

The mic features a gold-plated XLR connector, requires 48V phantom power, and includes a rubber shockmount and wooden case. The CB22 is finished in piano-black ED lacquer with a red logo, ring, and engraved model number.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is anyone successfully using this mic along side a USB MIDI controller with GarageBand and the like?

A: That mic should work fine with Garageband while using a USB MIDI controller.

Q: 2. How close does this need to be to the source? I have to film 3 people at once and was told I could boom a condenser or cardioid mic Can this plug directly into dslr of using battery power?

A: Close proximity (within .5 meter, .25 meter or less is better). This mic is designed for use on ONE person. While one could POTENTIALLY use with more than one person, it is NOT designed for that purpose. Additionally, a "Boom" Mic is typically designed to pick up only one person at a time. To use one microphone for 3 people, the room or environment would have to be very quiet. One Mic for each person is best, or, you may want to consider a "wider angle Boom Mic, such as those listed on B&H as "Stereo Shotgun Mics": https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/products/Shotgun/ci/8533/N/4291086008?filters=fct_stereo-mono_7426%3Astereo

Q: 3. How long is the 5-pin to 2 3-pin XLR stereo breakout cable that is included?

A: The Superlux S502MKII ORTF Stereo Condenser Microphone (BH # SU502MKII) includes an approximately 0.6 meter breakout cable assembly.

Q: 4. I recently purchased the SONY PXW-X70 PROFESSIONAL XDCAM CAMCORDER. It comes with an XLR handle with microphone holder, but no mic. Is this the right one to pair with it? Are there other (better) options? I want to outfit the camera right. Thanks.

A: I purchased this microphone over a year ago for my PD150; and I've been very happy with it's performance and ease of use.

Q: 5. What is the maximum distance the speaker can be from the mic?

A: For best results with the Pyle Pro PDMIKC5 and similar mics, it would be recommended to be positioned no more than a foot or so from the capsule of the mic.

Q: 6. Would this work well for interviews on a boom? As well as off camera audio for YouTube videos? Thanks

A: It probably wouldn't work very well. It's not a shotgun it's just a condenser mic. It will not have the distance that a shotgun would. Nor will the polar pattern be the same.

Q: 7. Is it always necessary to push to talk? Can the mic stay on?

A: No, it is a toggle switch not momentary. It will stay on the on position in which the ring around the button lights up as well as a ring around the microphone. If you hit the button again all lights go off and the microphone should be in the off position.

Q: 8. Is the Sony ECM-MS2 microphone compatible with the Sony HXR-NX100?

A: Yes the Sony ECM-MS2 microphone is compatible with the Sony HXR-NX100 camcorder.

Q: 9. How long the battery last, I need it for a busy restaurant!!

A: A single alkaline battery should supply hundreds of hours of actual use. Be sure NOT to leave the talk switch in the ON position.

Q: 10. I recently purchased the SONY PXW-X70 PROFESSIONAL XDCAM CAMCORDER. It comes with an XLR handle with microphone holder, but no mic. Is this the right one to pair with it? Are there other (better) options? I want to outfit the camera right. Thanks. I am referring to the Sony ECM-MS2 Stereo Electret Condenser Microphone BTW.

A: The correct mic for your PXW-X70 would depend on your application. The ECM-MS2 is a stereo mic. It is compatible with your camera, and great for recording audio such as general ambience, music and situations where left/right positional information is required. For interview and speech recording in front of the camera many prefer a mono shotgun mic such as the Rode NTG-1 due to its tighter pickup pattern and minimal off axis pickup. a href= http://bhpho.to/1hg4l94 target= _blank http://bhpho.to/1hg4l94/a

[Black] I purchased this condenser mic for my first try using a DAW setup. Thus far I am very impressed with the build quality and the sound quality. No concerns about longevity with this one. It does a great job on my vocals. Very clear and honest reproduction of whats going into it. Absolutely no regrets regarding this purchase!!

[48 V] B and H had my order ready in no time, and this is a great microphone! Using it for woodwinds and guitar so far and it has a beautiful mid range without too much harsh high end.

[Side Address] Finally, Sennheiser has come out with an 8000 series figure-8 microphone. They should have released this mic 10 years ago. The figure-8 pattern is fundamental to MS and Blumlein stereo techniques. It’s an extremely useful pattern in general, even though most audio engineers don’t use the pattern often enough.
As for this particular microphone, it’s fantastic. Sounds great (just like the other MKH 8000 series mics) with a low end much better than most figure-8 mics. Low noise. Small, light, lots of output. Nice non-reflective finish. This RF mic is not affected by high humidity.
I use it in a DMS configuration with a Sennheiser MKH 800 Twin. The 8030 replaces a MKH 800 P48 set to the figure-8 pattern which was previously used in that rig. The 8030 works fine in that application, sounding just as good as the 800 P48. Compared to the 800 P48, the 8030 is slightly noisier and has about 3 dB less output; neither difference is a problem.
I own a Neumann KM 120; the MKH 8030 is better.
I don’t know how Sennheiser could improve this microphone. It’s an expensive microphone, so I guess they could make it less expensive, right?

[Black] I got this mic to interview a friends pre-wedding interview in our home. I'm a novice by audio standards but I must say I was very delighted in the sound quality this mic provided. Was also glad it uses 9V battery or phantom power.

[Figure-8] I bought this mic to use for studio recording but tried it on my amp at a gig and that's where it stays now. The clarity is awesome! It is a little big and heavy but that's not a problem to me. Well worth the money for many applications!
