The CO22 from Pearl Microphone Labs is a large-diaphragm condenser microphone with an omnidirectional polar pattern designed for professional studio recording. At the heart of the CO22 lies the rubber-fitted capsule based on the pearl 2800, a unique rectangular-shaped condenser capsule that offers an extremely smooth off-axis response, detailed sound reproduction, and very-low self noise.

The tall and narrow capsule gives the CO22 a distinctive sonic signature, similar in some ways to a ribbon microphone. The detailed transient reproduction and smooth off-axis response makes the 22 series an excellent choice for orchestral and choral recordings, but it also performs well on other transient-rich sources, such as acoustic guitar or piano. The transformerless circuitry ensures a clear, natural sound and very low noise. The omnidirectional polar pattern in the CO22 makes it very well suited for capturing room acoustics and particularly sweet sounding performance environments. In addition, the omni capsule is a great fit for A/B stereo recording configurations, and the CO22 is also available as a matched stereo pair.

The mic features a gold-plated XLR connector, requires 48V phantom power, and includes a rubber shockmount and wooden case. The CO22 is finished in piano-black ED lacquer with a white logo, ring, and engraved model number.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How long does one battery last?

A: The battery life is not specified. However, users say they get about 40 hours. I've had this mic set for over a year with a spare battery. It is still running on the original cell. It goes on, and on and on. Keep a couple of spares and don't worry about it. It's not a problem,

Q: 2. Is this mic compatible with the Canon XA40?

A: Yes, the Senal MXBM-621/O is compatible for use with the Canon XA40.

Q: 3. Can it work with Zoom H5n?

A: Yes it's comparable with the Zoom H5N, however you will need a 3.5mm to XLR adapter in order make the connection into channel 1 and channel 2, you can use the adapter in the link bellow. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/387850-REG/Rode_VXLR_VXLR_Mono_Mini_Jack.html?sts=pi&pim=Y

Q: 4. I am looking for an inexpensive option for binaural recording and these mics look like just the thing. I just need to know, does each mic have two channels (ie, it's own l and r channel) or do each mic function as one channel each when recorded on a dslr?

A: Each mic goes to a difference channel and is separate. However, I don't recommend these for binaural recording, which requires greater sensitivity to be successful. These are very cheap mics and the battery system is clunky. I wish this system was executed in a better quality system but unfortunately it is not. There are better choices for binaural recording.

Q: 5. Can I use this mic in my DSLR? If so how can I use a headphone to monitoring the audio? Is there any adapter? Thanks.

A: Hi Gidel Q! I use headphones plugged into my video camera and go into the settings of the camera and make sure my audio output is set on 'Headphones'. This way I can hear if any background noise is affecting the recording of the audio.

Q: 6. Does it record distinct L and R channels (stereo) or just one mono channel?

A: The audio from both mics is combined as a dual mono signal so you hear the exact same audio through the left and right channels.

Q: 7. When muted, is there a light indicator?

A: Yes, the mute on/off status of the Senal MXBM-621/O MX Series Condenser Boundary Microphone is indicated by a dedicated LED.

Q: 8. I like the idea of having two mics for interviews, but will only need one mic most of the time. Can I deactivate one mic so I have clean sound?

A: You are able to use only one mic for interviews however the mics are not able to be individually deactivated.

Q: 9. Does it work with iPad?

A: Iphones and Android input mono via their TRRS (headphone) jacks. Both mikes will record onto 1 channel. The Rode SC6-L will input a true stereo input into an IOS device through it's lightning connector. This Polsen OLM-20 will input into an Ipad 1 channel mixing both microphones.

Q: 10. Would this mic work for people sitting 4 or 5 feet away? Any idea of the distance this could cover?

A: Yes, the MXBM-621/O can capture audio from people speaking who are 4 to 5 feet apart. The distance for coverage will vary depending on the environment where the mic is being used. The omnidirectional pattern picks up sound from 360 degrees and works best in quiet environments. Mics of this nature are often used for conferences and meetings. The mic is placed in the center of a table and picks up the voices of participants seated around the table.

[Black] Using it in our 'home studio' for prosumer-level performance video recording. Working great. Sound level top notch, lightweight, easy to assemble/disassemble. Definitely just right for this level of work.

[Phantom Power] I purchased this as a replacement for a well-used and worn-out microphone. The manufacturer's part # along w/ B&H's photo allowed me to be confident that I was ordering the correct product. It worked well and B&H's price was great.

[Black] The mic on my new computer did not work; they sent me a new computer, the mic still didn't work. A friend told me I might need an external mic so I ordered the ATR4650-USB and today used it for a book study over ZOOM. It was easy to install, I wore the mic on my sweater, and everyone could hear me. Thank you!

[Phantom Power] We bought it to install it in classrooms and it provides excellent sound. The signal to noise ratio is very good.

[Omnidirectional] for the occasional user. Works great. I use it to create a separate audio file and merge the audio and video later.

[Phantom Power] These mics are some of the most natural sounding microphones I've heard. They have a super flat frequency response - the flattest of any consumer or professional mic I've seen, except for measuring microphones. The tiny diameter of the mic (about 1/4 in) makes for excellent off-axis high end response. It's difficult to hear much difference in sound quality, whether you're on axis, or 90 deg off axis to the mic. This should make them great for small venues up close with no proximity effect, or for large auditoriums at further distances to the sound source. Of-course, the downside is the relatively high noise level - 23 dBA. I've played around with these mics in a living room environment and a smaller bedroom set up as a sound room, recording music from loudspeakers. So far, I've not noticed the noise level, or at least it hasn't become apparent above the room noise, which was relatively quiet. Recording music from my ESS Hiel Tower loudspeakers equalized for flat response over the range of my one octave analyser (31.5 Hz - 16 KHz), they sounded absolutely phenomenal. Deep, rich, clean bass up through the smooth highs, these mics are great. I look forward to recording some live music with them.

[Side Address] Audio-Technica has achieved what I thought was not possible in a microphone at this price. It provides very accurate and clear reproduction of string and reed instruments with a robust signal/noise ratio. In fact, the self-noise is far below what I expected in this small diaphragm design.
