This matched pair of ELM-A microphones from Pearl Microphone Labs ELM-A Stereo Condenser Micprovides musicians, engineers, and producers with a pair of large-diaphragm condensers with continuously variable polar patterns designed for professional stereo studio recording. At the heart of the ELM-A lies the rubber-fitted ELM capsule, a unique 7:1 rectangular condenser capsule that offers an extremely smooth off-axis response, detailed sound capture, and very-low self noise. This iteration of the ELM series provides dual outputs for each side of the capsule, allowing for seamless polar pattern changes in post-production and giving engineers a powerful tool for fine-tuning critical mixes.

The 7:1 length/width ratio of the capsule means that the polar pattern of the capsule functions like a standard cardioid in the horizontal plane, while vastly reducing the high frequencies, arriving from the vertical plane above and below the mic, a property that can be extremely useful for minimizing unwanted reflections from the floor and ceiling, providing the audio engineer with a valuable tool to handle poor room acoustics and challenging acoustical environments. This unusually narrow horizontal plane makes the ELM-A an excellent choice for choirs, drum overheads, vocals, instruments, string orchestras, symphonies, and ensembles. The transformerless circuitry yields crisp, detailed, and nuanced reproduction of sources with a self noise of only 11 dBA.

Each mic in this matched pair features a 5-pin XLR connector. Please note that dual 3-pin XLR breakout cables are available separately. Two rubber shockmounts and a wooden case are included.

  • Recording the mic's outputs onto two channels provides complete control over the polar pattern while mixing. Use only the front-capsule output for a standard cardioid pattern, while dialing in the rear capsule gives you an omnidirectional pickup. For a figure-of-eight response with a good rejection of 90° off-axis sounds, flip the polarity of the rear capsule.
  • This also means that the ELM-A can act as a 180-degree stereo microphone and that it can be used for several stereo configurations, such as M-S or Blumlein.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. what is the main difference between ECM-MS2 and ECM-VG1?

A: The ECM-MS2 has Stereo (M-S) and Mono capabilities, and the ECM-VG is Mono only. The ECM-MS2 is much shorter in length ( 5.5"), making it more suitable for placing on a smaller camera and the ECM-VG is over 8" in length. Both of these microphones require phantom power (40-52 V DC).

Q: 2. Do I need 2 of these adapters and batteries or is one enough to run the camera?

A: One will work. Not quite as fast recycle time as LiIon/rechargable in my EL500. Whether you need 2 depends on how many shots you plan to take before changing the battery. Don't know how many shots you will get from one battery

Q: 3. I recently purchased the SONY PXW-X70 PROFESSIONAL XDCAM CAMCORDER. It comes with an XLR handle with microphone holder, but no mic. Is this the right one to pair with it? Are there other (better) options? I want to outfit the camera right. Thanks.

A: I purchased this microphone over a year ago for my PD150; and I've been very happy with it's performance and ease of use.

Q: 4. Is this microphone works with Sony pxw-fs5m2

A: Yes. This microphone will let you record stereo audio into the camera.

Q: 5. Is this microphone compatible with the Nikon D5 DSLR ?

A: Yes, the Nikon ME-1 Stereo Microphone is fully compatible for use with the Nikon D5 DSLR camera.

Q: 6. Currently Have a Sony ECM-MS957 - Stereo Condenser Microphone with the 5 pin XLR Female outWill this Rode cable isolate 2 mono channels into the male XLRs?

A: Hi Robert, I use this cable with my AT BP4029 stereo microphone and plug the 2 male xlr into my zoom recorder. Each male XLR connector have the signal of each channel. My mic is also MS, so connector 1 carries the Mid, and connector 2 carries the Side channels. I hope this help you

Q: 7. Is this what I need to connect my Azden SGM 1X condenser mic to my sony HDR-CX900 camera 3.5 mm mic input?

A: This is a specialty cable designed for a 5 pin stereo XLR connection. Use this: Kopul LMT100 - Low to High Impedance Matching Transformer (1.5') B&H # KOLMT100

Q: 8. Is this compatible with the Audio-Technica BP4025 stereo mic?

A: Thank you for your question. This cable will function perfectly with the 5-pin output of the BP4025 and to split the stereo signal to separate left and right xlr.

Q: 9. Is there an audio jack within in the mic so I can listen to the sound while recording?

A: There is no jack on the unit. Just a 2-position rotary switch on the back and a cord with a 1/8 stereo plug coming out of it.

Q: 10. I recently purchased the ECM MS2 mic and no where in the instructions or users manual does it tell you how to hook up phantom power. I have the NEX FS700 camera that this mic is for and both channels can be set to use phantom power, but that is if you are using two separate mics. How do I properly set up phantom power for this mic?

A: Phantom power will be On for both XLR inputs so just plug in the microphone in on the left channel of the camera. The microphone disables phantom power for the right capsule if it is not connected to the camera.

[Black] This microphone is more professional than i am. The first use, I can hear noticeable better clarity then the Azden mic I have been using. Don't get me wrong, for the money the Azden mic is great, and I still use it. I record and video amateur live music videos with a Zoom F4 and with this mic I am excited about the quality of sound I should be able to obtain with this equipment.

[Phantom Power] Used for field/outside recording, this is a nice stereo microhpone for a middle cost. Phantom 24V is very useful.

[48 V] I got this to record music and theater performances, and its the perfect tool for the job.

The sound quality is great, and It gives an outstanding stereo separation.  It really makes my recordings sound like I know what I am doing.

It pairs perfectly with my Zoom F4 recorder, which combines the left and right feeds into a single stereo track.  And as a bonus, it lets me record a separate stereo track at a different level.  Thats perfect for live performances where I cant be at the recorder to set levels; I set a loud level and a quiet level, and I always have one that is right.

[Solid-State] Great addition to my BMPCC4K, Sound Devices 702, and RDE NTG3 gear. I needed a mic to capture some ambient sound, and live music. This mic impressed me with both. Works great also for dialogue when you need it fast. I had no problem mounting it on my camera (mounted on a stationary tripod). And I was ok moving around with it as well. Running and gunning is not impossible but keep in mind that may be somewhat difficult.

[48 V] This is a beautiful-sounding microphone, and it's provided fabulous results even when using it for ADR and VO on-the-fly. It has a very low noisefloor and captures well-articulated sound. The real bonus is the ability to use a 9V for phantom instead of P48 - works great when using with mobile recorders that don't have enough juice for long-duration and reliable P48. In Dead air roomtone tests, differences between internal 9V versus P48 were quite negligible except for some slightly better articulation of sub 100Hz frequencies. The real plus to this microphone is that although it has a wide cardiod pattern because of the twin capsules, its perceived polar pattern and off-axis rejection are very tight with a long throw, nearly matched to that of a hypercardiod shotgun mic. One can really drill down on what they want to record with this and not pick up excess ambient noise. A fantastic mic for sound effects and recording, and even intimate foley recording in close proximity. It would be great if it had an 80Hz High Pass and 10dB Pad switch, but that's only a minor letdown amidst the fantastic microphone that it is. The 10 Year Warranty is fantastic, a great piece of mind to have.

[Phantom Power] I got the NT4 to use in conjunction with my Sony Z7U. I've been recording live bands for the past 3 years and my current setup is the Sony, Nikon D7000, and a Zoom H4N. I wasn't getting great sound with the shotgun mic on the Sony because its a directional mic and it's better for voice only. I was relying on my H4n for all the live audio which sounds great but I needed another mic as a backup. Instead of purchasing another H4N I decided for look into better XLR mics for my Sony and came across the NT4. I'll probably be using the NT4 and my primary audio source over the H4N mainly because of how clear and precise the audio sounds! Amazing audio quality and i'm totally happy with my purchase. Plus it comes with a hard-case so I don't have to worry about it getting tossed around in my camera bag.

[Solid-State] I used two of these mics for a concert. I set one high above the choir and another one high in the back of the room, for ambient audio. I used them with a Zoom H6 and they worked great. I felt it captured a pretty full sound, though my clients asked for a bit more low end in editing. Your mileage may vary depending on client demands. I really like that they comes with cases. It's great to not have to buy another item just to protect the mics. They're heavy mics, so I wouldn't recommend using them on a camera. I put mine on lighting stands (I didn't like the tall mic stands for sale). It's pretty neat that it can be used with a 9V battery. Don't forget to turn them on first though! I hadn't really used mics with on-off switches before, so I'll need to get in the habit. Otherwise, I'm looking forward to using these for years to come.

[Cardioid] WOW! I'm using a Sony PCM-D100 stereo field recorder which has it all excepting dedicated balance XLR inputs. It does however have a 3.5mm PCR input and after a lot of research and aided by the really knowledgeable audio gurus at B & H, was able to determine that the Rode NT4 would prove to be an excellent match and after trying it, am astounded by the recordings I am experiencing!
