Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. will it work with a GH5? if so, which adapters would be best? speed booster or plain mechanical? being anamorphic w/ rear Anamorphic adapter may have issues with GH5 flange distance and adapter??

A: Please review the following item. Metabones PL Lens to Micro Four Thirds Camera T Adapter (Black) BH #MEMBPLM43BT1 • MFR #MB_PL-M43-BT1 https://bhpho.to/30Hqsr3

Q: 2. I'm looking at buying this lens to adapt to my GH5. Does this become 34-100mm due to the 2x crop factor of micro four thirds?

A: Yes, because of the GH5's micro four-thirds sensor has a 2x crop factor, it will transfer the crop of 2x to the Venus Optics Laowa Ranger S35 17-50mm T2.9 Cine Lens (ARRI PL). The view would be 34 to 100mm when adapted to the GH5. Adding a speed booster like this will lessen the crop significantly: Metabones Speed Booster Ultra 0.71x Adapter for Select PL Lenses to Micro Four Thirds Camera, B&H # MEMBSLM43BT1 With the speed booster, the Venus lens would have an FOV of 24 to 71mm.

Q: 3. In EF mount, will this lens work with an EF to MFT Metabones .71 Speedbooster?

A: The EF mount Venus Optics Laowa Ranger S35 50-130mm T2.9 Cine Lens (ARRI PL) is not compatible with any speedbooster. Speedboosters are meant to be used on full-frame lenses.

Q: 4. Are Laowa Ranger zoom lenses compatible with adapters with glass elements, such as EF or PL to MFT Metabones .71 Speedboosters?

A: The Venus Optics Laowa Ranger 28-75mm T2.9 Cine Zoom Lens (PL/EF) with the EF mount attached should function fine with speed boosters like the Metabones T Speed Booster Ultra 0.71x Adapter for Canon Full-Frame EF-Mount Lens to Micro Four Thirds-Mount Camera since the rear elements on the EF mount should not protrude any further like other EF lenses. The PL mount protrusion still needs to be listed, but if it is not more than 14.5mm, it should be okay on the Metabones Speed Booster Ultra 0.71x Adapter for Select PL Lenses to Micro Four Thirds Camera.

Q: 5. what is the OD of the lens barrel for Matte box mounting?

A: The Venus Optics Laowa Ranger 28-75mm T2.9 Cine Zoom Lens has an 80mm front diameter.

Q: 6. What size matte box back/adapter does this lens require?

A: The Venus Optics Laowa Ranger Lite 28-75mm T2.9 Cine Zoom Lens can be mounted to a matte box with an 80mm diameter or step up clamp on from the 77mm front filter threads.

Q: 7. Country of origin of the laowa zoom lens?

A: This information can be found on LAOWA's website: https://www.venuslens.net/story/ "LAOWA's headquarter and manufacturing facility are in Hefei, located at the eastern part of China and 5-hour drive from Shanghai."

Q: 8. Is the EF/Pl mount interchangeable and does it come with both when the lens is purchased?

A: The Venus Optics Laowa Ranger 28-75mm T2.9 Cine Zoom Lens (PL/EF) comes with the PL mount attached and the EF mount with parts and shim set, to switch mounts.

Q: 9. Does this come in RF mount?

A: The Venus Optics Laowa Ranger T2.9 Full Frame Cine Zoom 2-Lens Kit (PL/EF) is only available in PL/EF Mount however you could use the kit with Canon's EF to RF adapter. Or change he mount using The Venus Optics Laowa Ranger T2.9 Cine Zoom Interchangeable Bayonet (Canon RF). Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R BH #CAMAEFRF • MFR #2971C002 Venus Optics Laowa Ranger T2.9 Cine Zoom Interchangeable Bayonet (Canon RF) BH #VEIBRANGERRF • MFR #VEIBRANGERRF ( please note you would require two for the kit)

Q: 10. What is the difference from this one and the "Lite" version?

A: The lite version of the Venus Optics Laowa Ranger 28-75mm T2.9 Cine Zoom Lens is housed in a magnesium alloy making it 10% lighter weight than the standard Ranger lens.

[Super35/APS-C] Really loving this lens particularly the lightweight. Have used Angenieux and Fuji lenses on a few features, and this lens cut right in with them. It's fast and lightweight and build quality is good as well. Definitely recommended.

[0.8:1] Great lens for product shots if you have enough lights to compensate for the f/14 aperture. Totally worth it.

[77 mm] I've been looking at these lenses for over a year now, and finally being able to get my hands on one has brought such a next level image to my projects. I've only used it on a couple projects so far, but I think it's great. The parafocal ability is so great, and the lens' rings and gears are so smooth. The focal distance ring seems to have a little more resistance when moving it, but it's not a hinderance to its use. When focusing in or out, the focus breathing seems to be nonexistent and is sooooo smooth.
Specifically with the image that you get out of this lens, I think it has a wonderful amount of character/softness to the amount of sharpness. One reason I've moved over to cinema lenses is that they're not as clinical or sharp as my photography lenses, and they give my video a much more personal look and feel. But when it comes to some commercial work, my original cine lenses can be a bit too soft at a T 2.0. But this Laowa Ranger gives me the right amount of sharpness and character to use on just about any project, and having this in my daily camera rig just eliminates the hassle of switching out lenses to get the look I'm going for.
I know this review isn't very technical, but if you're a first time buyer of cinema zoom lenses, this is an incredible place to start and you won't regret it.

[Super35/APS-C] A true S35 PL cine zoom under 5K. What's not to like besides the ooom name? A bit of CA in bright highlights and softening at full telephoto but otherwise this so-called vintage look zoom lens is noteworthy and a bargain during B&H holiday sale. PL mount parfocal right out of the box. Breathing minimal. Sharpness held up against a set of Xeen cine primes (T4). Not for small rigs. Lens is heavy and requires lens support. Solid build and 4x factor makes it feel like a real cine zoom lens. Overall really nice and no significant difference between this zoom lens and others costing way much more.

[77 mm] Excelente rendimiento de este lente, apenas deforma un poco los bordes y por el precio se convertirá en mi focal preferida.

[Super35/APS-C] I own the Tokina 11-20 and 50-135 and this lens is the perfect lens to complete the set or to own on it's own. I find it sharper than the other two lenses (although the 50-150 is nice and sharp) and unlike some other brands it can be used wide open at T2.9 (not too soft). Beautiful build, no focus breathing that I saw.

[T2.9] A very unique lens with specific applications (Macro shooting). This lens has it all, from 24mm f/14 to illuminated lens tip that can be activated via connection to a usb power supply. As with a lot of macro lenses, this one is great for studio shoots and for photographing subjects that are still. The design provides me with a lot of interesting angles, views, and applications. I didn't post any pictures because there are some great ones online that were taken with this lens, demonstrating the versatility of the probe lens.

[77 mm] This thing is a tank. The one downside is how heavy it is, but personally I'll take the extra 2 lbs for this amazing focal length range. Built to last a lifetime. We've put this through hell over the past 12+ months and it's still rock solid. Would buy again, no questions.
