Heritage Audio Herchild has established iteself as the industry and world reference for the Vari-Mu Fairchild tube-based compression. Now, with the Herchild Model 670 The Ardent Edition, you can experience the legendary sound of Ardent Studios, with modified attack and release times to perfectly match Ardent's original units—first used to track Jimmy Page's acoustic guitars on Led Zeppelin III. The Model 670 features 22 tubes and 9 transformers to ensure the absolute highest quality possible. This two-channel compressor offers four modes of operation. Either use each channel separately or linked together (stereo). The LAT/VERT and LAT/VERT Link modes make mid/side processing possible.

While remaining true to the original in terms of response and sound, the Model 670 offers new practical features for today's production workflow including direct access to the continuously variable slope control (DC Threshold) and a side-chain filter (SC Filter). The Herchild Model 670 The Ardent Edition will be produced only on request, in an ultra-limited edition, hand-made in Heritage Audio's factory in Madrid, Spain.

  • For almost 60 years, Ardent Studio has been a special creative space for a diverse and world-renowned clientele of recording artists such as Led Zeppelin, Sam and Dave, ZZ Top, R.E.M., Isaac Hayes, The Staple Singers, Stevie Ray Vaughan, BB King, The Bar-Kays, The White Stripes, Big Star, Bob Dylan, The Raconteurs, The Gin Blossoms, Stevie Wonder, Steve Earle, Smashing Pumpkins, and The Allman Brothers, to name a few.
  • It's been home to a wide range of unique and talented producers and engineers and has witnessed the creation of many timeless recordings that have influenced the direction of modern music and music production.

  • Ardent’s team modified the attack and release times of their original Fairchild units in the early '70s, so that the time constants were faster and therefore more usable for modern recording studios at the time.
  • After receiving the pencil-on-paper notes from the original modifications, the Heritage Audio team has worked together with Ardent to acurately replicate the time constants of the original.

  • A faithful reproduction of the original, the Herchild Model 670 is packed with 22 tubes and 9 transformers. It operates at a very high voltage and uses only the best components to deliver the utmost quality possible.
  • This is immediately recognized during use, as there are no audible thumps produced. And with extremely low distortion and noise, this compressor is perfect for mixing and mastering duties.

  • Direct access to the continuously variable slope control (DC Threshold). On the original, this control was only available via an inconvenient screw adjustment hidden from immediate access.
  • LAT/VERT mode makes mid/side processing possible.
  • Side-chain filter with four different frequencies to choose from, to precisely tailor your compression.

A: No, the headphones that are included with the Steven Slate Audio VSX Modeling Headphones Essentials Edition system are wired. The included software enables the user to monitor in a variety of acoustically treated environments with an immersive 3D experience that removes mix issues caused by poor room acoustics and limited speaker selection. [Black] It completely redefined my way of producing. Delivery was incredibly fast. The Apollo x4 is a beast of an interface and even so the UaD plugins included in the bundle.

[Black] I've been lusting after a physical LA2A for years. I actually first used one in the early 1970's in a radio station, their original market. I've tried a number of plugins, some of which aren't bad. But the weird mixture of tubes, transformers and a light bulb (panel in this case) is just hard to beat. Like all great audio gear, you may cease to notice it when it's there, but you'll truly miss it when it's not there. I have a number of wildly dynamic singers in the studio, and this just works the magic to make their vocals sit in the mix. And it makes those same vocals bigger sounding at the same time. Is it the best LA2A clone out there? I don't know since I can't test it against all the rest. But it's darn good. BTW, let me put to rest any fears about build quality, etc. This is my second (and won't be my last) piece of Warm Audio kit. Absolutely no issues with the way these beasts arrive and work. Possibly, outside of acoustic treatment, the best investment I've ever made in my studio.

[Black] For years I had debated whether I needed “vintage“ gear for my home studio. Having just completed my first project with the Apollo x4 I can say it was absolutely worth the investment for me.

The quad processing power is just right for my home studio, I have not maxed out the DSP yet. Since I don’t record drums or a full band at home, there is plenty of power here to handle a small group. More often I’ll use one or two inputs at a time. Two headphone outputs is important to me so that each musician gets their own mix.

I ended up spending about another $2000 to get the full UAD set of plug-ins. I would have preferred to spend half that much now and add more down the road, but the economics work out that you get a much better deal when you purchase them upfront. I would have had about 10 plug-ins, but now I have all 66 and I have already used close to half of them.

A lot of money for a home studio but if you purchased a dedicated tube preamp and compressor you’d spend a similar amount, and it would sound great but it wouldn’t be as flexible.

It was easy to set up, for me it “just worked”. UA support took a couple of days to respond when I had a question but they gave a thorough response. UA has great videos on their website to help you learn how to use each plugin.

The buying experience from B&H was excellent—it arrived in perfect condition a day earlier than I expected. It’s an investment, but if you are dedicated to learning how to use the equipment you will get professional results. I can strongly recommend.

[Black] From the Universal Audio Website:
The latest UAD software is compatible with Windows 10 and Windows 11 (64-bit editions), and all Thunderbolt-equipped Apollo and UAD-2 products (Apollo X series, Apollo 8, Apollo 8p, Apollo 16 MkII, Apollo Twin, Apollo Twin MkII, Apollo Solo, Arrow, UAD-2 Satellite Thunderbolt, and first-generation silver Apollo/Apollo 16 models equipped with a Thunderbolt Option Card).
That was an easy google, and I wonder why the other reviewer wasn't able or willing to do the same before pulling the trigger on this purchase ... or on his review.

I don't understand people who write reviews in which they reveal not a single fact about the product, and instead just confess to their own lack of research before buying.

The Apollo system has come under a lot of pressure, because the better computers get, the less of a need is for UA's system of handling processing in the interface as opposed to the computer's CPU. UA has responded by making more and more of their famous plugins available natively, so you can now run them in your DAW directly.

Whether or not an Apollo is still your best choice depends on the power of your computer, and on how much you appreciate the design, easy usability and overall elegance of a unit like this.

The price is a powerful argument to consider alternatives, unfortunately.
