Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. As an International buyer without means to return after purchase, have there been any buyers that have had asymmetric optical performance or just generally bad edge sharpness? My experience with used AF-D 20mm lenses has been horrendous, but very much like the AIS. Just worried about sample variation possibilities

A: We have not received any negative reports in terms of the sharpness/optic performance of this lens. This lens should provide you excellent results.

Q: 2. The specs say this lens accepts an 82mm filter. The photos show a large front element that extends past the front of the metal. How does the filter attachment work with the protruding lens?

A: A 82mm filter would screw into the circular lens hood itself. It does not mount on the lens itself. (No filter can mount in the also included Lotus-style lens hood.)

Q: 3. Can this lens be used with a Nikon D5200 camera?

A: Yes, you can mount this all manual focus and aperture lens on a Nikon D5200 camera. That is what having a company supporting its 60 year old F mount gets you.

Q: 4. I don't see in the specs or overview section that this lens has the SIC lens coatings; can someone confirm if it has the SIC coating?

A: The NIKKOR 20mm f/2.8 is multi-coated against ghosting and lens flare, but that does not contain an SIC coating.

Q: 5. does this give a fisheye look to the images?

A: The Viltrox AF 20mm f/2.8 Lens (Nikon Z) is not a fisheye lens. Fisheye lenses tend to start in the 16mm or wider range, and the product would specifically state "fisheye" in the description.

Q: 6. Does this fit the nikkormat ft3

A: Yes, this would fit a Nikkormat FT3 as it also uses the Nikon F mount.

Q: 7. Will this lens be compatible with a D500 and a Z50 (using the FTZ)?

A: Yes this is compatible with the Nikon D500 and will fit on the Nikon Z50 with the FTZ Adapter.

Q: 8. The title says AF, but in the Specs - it is listed as manual. Could you clarify?

A: The Viltrox AF 20mm f/2.8 Lens (Sony E) supports both autofocus and manual focus functions.

Q: 9. Will this work on the Nikon ZF?

A: Yes, the Viltrox AF 20mm f/2.8 Lens will work on the Nikon Zf Mirrorless Camera.

Q: 10. What is the difference in the Nikon AF-SNikkor 20mm f/1.8g ed and Nikon NIKKOR 20mm f/2.8 Lens?

A: 1.8 is heavier, more expensive, able to eat more light full open and plastic feel to it. 2.8 lighter, metal, on tripod superb results, sharp lens. Both almost same just the question of money, what material you prefer and if you hand held the 20mm on your camera. I personally would go with 2.8 which is made up from metal and glass, feels like a real lens and has good optical results.

[Nikon Z] Everything positive you’ve heard about this cheap lens is true. Light, fast, and good build quality, it punches with the quality of a $500-$700 lens. Very enjoyable on the Sony A7IV!

[Full-Frame] I purchased the lens to give it as a gift. However, I'm having so much fun with it that I will keep it and add it to my lenses. This lens is sharp and accurate picking up the focus quickly no matter what focus mode I'm in. The lens is a great value for the price. Thanks, Viltrox.

[f/2.8] I’ve been looking for a fairly wide 20mm prime for some time now. I had borrowed a friend’s Sig’16mm but too bulky for canid street, and concealed carry on my a6000. So when I first heard of this and saw a review on “the Tube”, I immediately went to the B&H site to find what they had to say and then it was a done deal the B&H reviewer hit the key areas of all my concerns and from what I’ve experienced so far, he was spot on. This is why I trust this store

Though I have been tied up with an ongoing project that wrapping up soon. Of what I have been able to use it’s insanely sharp, and haven’t seen any issues yet. I picked up this for an upcoming trip we have planned to northeastern Oregon and from the few shots I’ve taken so far I am very pleased with how it performs. For now it will primarily stay on my a7riii but it will be used on my a6000 and the a6700. I will chime in again after a few trips.

[91.6°] I don't actually love this lens because composition is a challenge with this focal length: it's hard to keep stuff you aren't interested in out of the frame, and perspective distortion is a big issue. The five star rating assumes you want to experiment with this focal length.

None of the other issues I found with this lens are worth taking a star off:

1. The lens is reasonably sharp. I've attached a crop from the center and what I judge to be the worst corner on my copy (shot on a 45 megapixel Z8, f/2.8, ISO 64, 1/250 second). You will notice that in the corner crop, the tower appears to be significantly bigger, and tilted. That's perspective distortion in action.

2. There is some chromatic aberration in out of focus areas. Depending how picky you are about such things, you might want to avoid out of focus tree branches against a white sky when using this lens.

3. The lens has a lot of vignetting, which isn't corrected in out of camera JPEG images. I've attached a sample JPEG image.

4. The subject distance is miscalibrated on the Z8. It reports a focus at infinity as a focus distance of 10.24 meters in the exif data, and in manual focus mode will show the focus as being well short of infinity.

The lens reportedly has some field curvature, but I couldn't spot any indications of field curvature in my photos.

Bottom line: not a perfect lens, but good enough for most uses.

[Nikon Z] Crisp pictures and for the price, why not? It fits my camera perfectly and it is very sturdy. The edges do have a very tiny glare but not enough to not use it. like i said you pay what you get for usually but a lens this cheap being this good is rare. Definitely a pick up!

[f/16] I’m very much enjoying this lens as it is hot spot free for my infrared photography. Great and extremely reasonably priced lens.

[Autofocus] I've been using this lens primarily for low light shots of cars at night. It works great! It gets strapped on my Nikon Zf. My example photos were shot at a parking deck around 9PM at night in downtown Canton, OH.

[f/16] As many YouTube channels have reported, what a deal for the price. Decent construction, engineering/design is primo, and 20MM is now my “walking around lens” because of its usefulness and pix quality. Even at 20MM, most people are not aware of how wide the view is until they compare to “normal” shots done with a 35-50MM lens. It’s easy to keep lines from converging in shots that are subject to convergence.

No regrets from me, for sure!
