[8 mm ] This unit functions reasonably well keeping mind that it's not a commercial device. It functions by pausing each movie frame between a light source and digital sensor until the reel gets finished.
The converted movie is compressed meaning that the sequential sensor images are stored as a representation to allegedly save memory space. This results in compression artifacts which appear to excessively enhance the granularity of a film. For example slow Kodachrome (not deteriorated) reproduces reasonably well but Tri-X reversal film appears unusually grainy. Given the extensive storage afforded by SD memory is it's a wonder that compression needs to be bothered with at all. It's sort of tricky to thread the thing so some patience and practice are needed.

Potential buyers should be aware that problems arise not with the unit but rather with the condition of the film to be converted. Original 50 foot spools with no splices--like they came from being developed--likely will go right through with little problem. Longer spools of film will have splices and possibly some damage. It's really helpful to have access to a suitable film editor. The ability to repair film and replace splices can minimize mechanical jamming during conversion. It's a good idea to keep an eye on the conversion process and get used to the click-click-click associated with things going okay. It's not fun to find a gob of film on the floor if something goes wrong.

[11 x 9.6 x 2.7"] I bought this compressor, at the recommendation of a friend, to level out the extreme voice volume fluctuation of my pastor. I have been extremely pleased with the result...exactly what I wanted. The pastor can now be clearly heard all throughout the chapel without me having to try and manually adjust his volume ups and downs. It takes a little time to set this up to get just the right wireless mic input into the compressor, but the result is noise free and evenly adjusted volume. On the recording, I hear no noise and the quality is excellent. I received instant comments from many worshippers on the improvement. I could not be happier!!

[11 x 9.6 x 2.7"] UltraScope by Blackmagic is a must have for anyone running Resolve. It is highly recommended that you run this card in a separate computer from your decklink (if that is what you are using) They do not play well together. Beside that issue, my Colorist demand the UltraScope on all our systems.
